    This is what an eight game losing streak does . It makes people crazy.

    On paper , this looks like a win for the Sox . Then they go home to host one of the worst teams in recent memory . A four game winning streak is very possible. That will give renewed hope to many fans .

    Boone gets a lot of points for winning with a depleted lineup . But some of his moves ( if they are really his ) are real head scratchers .

    How deep the starters go is often the manager's call . The trend seems to be that they are happy with six innings. Even then , you have to count on three relievers doing the job . The Sox have not had that . Hence , the high percentage of blown saves . If we had a couple more high quality relievers , the least capable guys would not even be on the team . That is the heart of the problem. Not enough quality arms.

    There is nothing that they have shown this year that makes me feel that they will be better next year . Maybe a year older and wiser . But hope springs eternal .

    Not really , except that they would have fewer chances to fail .

    Betts is a franchise type player . They don't come along too often . You do everything you can to keep them .

    Seems like the Yankees are willing to pretty much give this one away .

    Houston may have picked up a real sleeper in Sanchez . He was dying in Toronto , but he has a very good arm . The results in Houston could be very different .

    And so is the reverse of that . Blaming the rotation for the pen's failures is a cop out .

    The Yankees just announced that everyone is injured and will miss tonight's game . Rather than forfeit, they are recruiting teenagers in the park across the street to suit up and play against the Sox tonight. Vegas now lists the game as an even money toss up .

    It may have that effect , but I don't think that was the reason for it's existence. And you could make a case that the second wild card is not fair to the first wild card team . And , in the end , they still have a chance to win it all .

    That is always a possibility. Sometimes it could be because of a weaker division . Or maybe just a better balanced division. But at least , after a 162 game season , they won the division. That counts for something. One wild card allows for a really good team , finishing second in a tough division, to get a shot . But two wild cards is just a means to maintain fan interest late in the season . A team could actually finish third in a five team division and still get another bite of the apple , so to speak . And we all know that anything can happen in a short series. I think it cheapens the regular season and the division races .

    Tonight's game thread in a nutshell . ESPN sucks . A- Rod sucks . The female does not belong in the booth . The umpires are incompetent and they suck . They love the Yankees , just like the announcers do . Use your mute button. A- Rod sucks . Cora is a dunce . The Red Sox suck . This game is over . Yankee Stadium is a joke . A- Rod sucks . Put him on mute . Get rid of Bradley . Screw Benintendi. I don't ever want to see Barnes again . He chokes . The umps are cheating us . Football starts soon . I can't wait . A- Rod sucks . And finally , ( hopefully ) " good win " . Keep it up . There you have it . That is the game thread . No need to follow it now .

    True . I did think they would go away . But they have not . I still think catching them is a possibility, although it's not looking like a very good one at the moment . And my personal feeling is that the second wild card is a bogus gimmick. I don't think second wild card teams deserve a shot at the brass ring . And if they get the shot , get hot ( lucky ) and win it all , it is an injustice.

    Umpires make mistakes just like players and managers do . It is all part of the game .

    We are now 15 games behind the Yankees in the loss column. That is incredible. And when you think how decimated by injuries the Yankees are and have been , it is mind boggling.

    I think what sometimes happens is teams get into a " losing mode ." The players would never admit it but , their confidence ebbs and doubt starts to creep in. Confidence and poise are essential to success in anything . That is why you see " hot streaks " and " cold spells " in players and teams . Right now , they are finding ways to lose . If they are trailing late , they don't come back . If they are leading late , they blow it . The bigger , overall problem is that they have not demonstrated all year that they can beat the good teams.

    If the Sox don't beat this depleted Yankee lineup tonight it might be time to give up . Cannot lose this one .

    Pretty dismal performance today . Facing what was probably the weakest lineup the Yankees can put out there . Should be even weaker tonight without Encarnacion .

    As expected , the bullpen has been a problem all season . The rotation being a problem is , at least somewhat , unexpected.
