  1. Players are considered " stars " for a reason. It is because they are very good. You are more likely to win and generate fan interest when you have very good players. It is much more difficult to do that with a bunch of jabronis. That should not really be arguable . Obviously , you do have to pay the stars more than you have to pay the jabronis. That's life.
  2. I don't think you can just discredit a pitcher's won / lost record. ( Obviously , there are exceptions to this ) The name of the game is still winning or losing. So a pitcher's wins and losses are still important. Same thing with saves and blown saves. They should not be looked at in a vacuum however. Look at them in conjunction with other stats , most notably ERA. No stat is going to be perfect.
  3. I think a G.M.'s job is to put together a team that gets into position to win a title. They can't be judged on the results of a short series.
  4. As far as I know, they still have not come up with a good analytic for adultery. You have to trust your judgement.
  5. If Sale could will it to happen , he would start opening day. But it doesn't work that way. The healing process takes time , no matter how much you may wish it to speed up. Sale is no exception.
  6. Cabrera did a fine job for the Sox in 2004. Especially on defense. Helped to win a championship and definitely made the trade look good. But Nomar was all around far superior . No comparison at all as a hitter. And when you add in Cabrera's character issues , it's no wonder that he quickly wore out his welcome.
  7. Harm , Any word from Marcel on when the Mariners might get to the World Series ?
  8. A 38 year old southpaw that the Yankees no longer want around. That is not exactly the model for building a perennial contender. However , Happ does offer more opportunities for those who like to fool around with players names in a derogatory manner.
  9. It's possible that the Sox could have matched or even topped the Dodger's offer and Mookie would still have preferred going to L.A. But we do not know that . It is only speculation. The only thing we know is that he rejected the Sox' first offer , they traded him to the Dodgers , and he signed long term with L.A. without any apparent hesitation. He is happy , has another ring and is very wealthy. Meanwhile , the Sox had an abysmal season and are trying to figure out how to get back in the hunt. That's about it. What more is there to say?
  10. It is no sense keeping Mookie if that means that you cannot afford a top notch supporting cast to go with him. But was that really the case? We need to remember that the luxury tax was the owner's ploy to get around the lack of a salary cap. It is not some burden that has been imposed on them. The owners want to maximize their profits , just as the players want to maximize their earnings. That is understandable. But as fans , we just want a team we can get behind. Having a Mookie Betts makes that more likely . Without that , fan interest wanes , as was certainly obvious this year. The fans do not want to be the ones in the middle of the fight between the owners and the players. We are paying the bills , but we do care about our money also. And we don't have nearly as much of it as the players , much less the owners. And we do not have to spend it on baseball. Losing a player like Mookie most definitely does nothing to excite the fans. Nor does hearing that the " luxury tax " was the reason for it.
  11. Some folks just don't like Dombrowski's style and were not happy when he was hired. Mostly , they do like Cherington , and wanted to see him get more time. Most , not all, of these folks are reluctant to give D.D. much credit for the team's success during his tenure. And they are quick to blame him for anything negative that happened after his departure . That is probably not very fair or objective . But , then again, what is ?
  12. How often does one of these guys admit that they were cheating and they got caught? It is more convenient to say that their protein shake must have somehow been contaminated with Nandrolone. It is kind of hard to believe that they were not cheating all along and finally got nailed. Especially when it is their second offense. I guess they felt that the reward was worth the risk.
  13. Barnes finished last season as the closer. As of right now , you would have to consider him to be the closer. Obviously, that could change.
  14. He always said that it is best to move on after ten years or so. Wonder if he has a new destination already in mind ?
  15. Too soon to judge the switch in the return for Mookie. So far , Graterol has a World Series ring , while Downs has played just eleven games at AA. If everything works out ideally for both of them , an All Star shortstop would certainly be more valuable than even a lights out closer. But that is a big if. Right now , the most memorable thing about Downs is his first name. I think it is fair to say that neither of them will ever be in the same category as Betts.
  16. If nothing else, they need to do something to generate some interest among the fan base. The past two off seasons have been more about cost control. Whether or not you think that was necessary, it certainly does nothing to excite the fans.
  17. Like so many things, they have become more of a relic to the past. GPS has kind of taken away their job. Now , they are mostly a tourist attraction, although I think a few are still in use. There are some great ones up and down the East Coast.
  18. Probably a wise move by Gausman and Stroman. They are decent pitchers , but neither has ever been a big winner and they will both turn thirty shortly. I don't think there would be a great demand for them , especially with a Q.O. involved , even in good times.
  19. Harm , The expression "Or not" has achieved catch phrase status on TalkSox. Maybe you need to patent it , because a lot of folks are stealing it. As the old time stripper, " Gypsy" Rose Lee , used to say , " You gotta have a gimmick."
  20. With Sanchez , there is still the thought that he has big time power hitting potential. You don't like to give up on that too quickly.
  21. Apropos of nothing, I am a fan of lighthouses . One of the photos in my den is of Peggy's Cove ( Peggy's Point ) in N.S. Very nice .
  22. My question is this: Are the boys from analytics in contact with , and making recommendations to , the manager during the course of the game ? If they are , is that a good thing?
  23. The old " show the cop your Hall of Fame ring " gimmick. I guess it used to work. Not any more.
  24. I think professional athletes are very self confident in general. However , moments of doubt can occur in certain situations. And when that happens, it certainly can have a negative effect on their performance. And a batter is going to be more confident facing some pitchers rather than others. There is always the human factor .
  25. How we word things can make all the difference in getting our point across. " He's still only 32 " sounds much better than " He's already on the wrong side of 30. "
