  1. Citing a particular game or series of games does not prove or disprove a point. There is still a basic principle. The better team or athlete is more likely to win . This is not as certain in baseball, especially playoff baseball. But it is still a fact. That is why you have odds and point spreads. Even in a crapshoot, you are somewhat more likely to roll a seven than you are an eight. But you are much more likely to roll either than you are to roll a two ( snake eyes). I don't see how any of this is arguable.
  2. In an actual crapshoot, there are odds and probabilities on every roll of the dice. It is not a flip of the coin situation. I would be happy to bet on baseball, playoffs included , if I could pick who I wanted without laying any odds. But my local " gambling impresario " , Paul " Needlenose " Minagge won't take me up on it.
  3. It is a basic understanding in sports and in gambling. The better team/athlete is going to win more often than not. That is why they have odds and point spreads. If you could bet on baseball , even money , you could make a nice, easy living without working. In the post season , all the teams involved are good so the result is less certain . But the same idea still applies.
  4. Let's face it folks, Chaim Bloom is not exactly " Mr. Excitement." We will all need to be very, very patient.
  5. Lasorda was one of those people who was likable , even if you hated the team he represented. Just seemed like a good guy.
  6. In any sports event , the better team or athlete is more likely to win. That is why we have betting odds and point spreads. In baseball , there are more variables, most notably pitching performance, so the chances of an upset are greater. Still, it is not a total crapshoot. The better team is still more likely to prevail.
  7. They came very close in 2016. Came up just a little short. Since then , the owner has not spent to try and put them over the top. Fan support has been lagging. Now , they trade their best player because they don't want to pay him. Their drought will probably go on for at least the immediate future and maybe much longer.
  8. I don't think the Mets are done yet. The new owner seems determined to make an immediate impact.
  9. Some fans get more enjoyment from their team acquiring star players. Some other fans get more satisfaction from saying , " we saved money and are building for the future." Just a different perspective on things.
  10. Seems that some of the top A.L. players are moving to the N.L. Will this trend continue? Are the N.L. owners more interested in spending for top talent? Or are the A.L. owners smarter?
  11. I think WHIP has some value in evaluating a pitcher. But I think ERA is more important. The games are decided by runs scored, not by total baserunners. Every stat has flaws , including WAR . WAR is kind of complicated and is one stat that few , if any , of us are able to calculate on our own.
  12. Are you revealing the news that baseball is a team sport ? Thank you. We learn something every day.
  13. A rotation where all the starters have a good won / loss record is generally preferable to the opposite. I know it is way too old school, but the team with the best won / loss record is usually awarded the division title.
  14. Old school thinking would have given more weight to ERA . ERA should always be looked at in conjunction with wins/ losses . Without looking it up , I would guess that Santana had a considerably lower ERA. I guess the voters were not all that old school.
  15. For those who wonder why the old school fans question the value of things like fWAR ; In 2020 , Rick Porcello had a record of 1 - 7 , with an ERA of 5.64 . The Mets have little to no interest in bringing him back.
  16. Trade away every player making more than 2 million a year. Trade them for any " prospects " offered. Think of the money " we " would save. The team might not be very good , but you can't finish lower than fifth anyway.
  17. Okay , but I don't think that I am in that category. I want them to spend and go after the impact players , but I don't cry about it and hate the players when it doesn't work out as planned. It's all a gamble . But at least they tried. No guts , No glory.
  18. I certainly don't know what the plan is, but I do think they need to make a splash and come up with a big , impact signing. The " throw it against the wall and see if it sticks " signings are just not enough to even warm up the old hot stove.
  19. Personally, I would not trade Torres to acquire Castillo. And if the Sox could have either of them , I would prefer Torres. The analytical opinions of the dweebs at fangraphs, etc. notwithstanding.
  20. How is it that folks who lambasted Dombrowski for trading prospects for established pitchers , now want Bloom to trade prospects for established pitchers ? Now , I'm no " expert " and I never look at sites like baseball trade values etc . , but that does seem a bit strange to me.
  21. Football and basketball are relatively simple games . Baseball is somewhat more complicated. It takes more of an effort to understand and appreciate. Analytics makes it more so. For years , many kids learned the game from their fathers , then later taught it to their kids. In today's society , too often that is not happening, and it has been that way for a while now. The lack of a young fan base is baseball's biggest problem. The length and pace of games becomes more of a problem when you don't really understand the game to begin with. The young fan becomes bored quite easily. Nothing MLB has done so far has alleviated this .
  22. Many, if not most , baseball fans have played the game at some level and like to think of themselves as knowledgable about the sport. The current emphasis on analytics is appealing to some , but it is a turn off to many others. As a sport and as a business, baseball needs to appeal to a large fan base. There is certainly a place for analytics, but when overdone a lot of folks start losing interest. And it absolutely is being way overdone at present.
  23. In between the stars and jabronis, you have the ham and eggers. And there are different degrees of each category.
  24. As a Vice President of my local PETA organization, I strongly object to the use of various animal names being used in sports played by humans. I mean , it's bad enough that you put them in zoos , hunt , slaughter , wear and eat the animals ; but they have to be nicknames and mascots too ? Unfortunately, I don't have enough influence to get the various owners and those in charge of things to accede to my demands. Maybe someday. This public service announcement has been brought to you by people who take things way too seriously.
