  1. The ultimate object is to win the game. Wins , saves and ERA are paramount. All this other stuff is window dressing and gobbledygook. Which is fine if you enjoy window dressing and gobbledygook.
  2. It's not just about letting players go. That happens. Turnover happens. It's more about replacing them with players that are not as good and not as much fun to watch. And when that happens, don't be surprised when the team is not as good and struggles to compete. And don't be surprised when many fans are not too happy.
  3. The " cliff " is an imaginary thing. Not real. The reality is that John Henry woke up one day and thought , " This ballclub is getting a little too expensive. I am going to cut the spending a little bit. " So you can blame him for that . Or you can give him a pass . After all , we do have four championships on his watch and the payroll is still pretty high . Or you can blame Bloom. But he is doing what he was hired to do. And it is difficult to put together a great team by bringing in a bunch of mediocrities and hoping for big things from them.
  4. The payroll for the guys taking the field every day is not all that impressive. ( And neither are the guys taking the field every day ). A lot of it is tied up elsewhere.
  5. From the 2018 championship team the Sox have shed the following: Rotation- Price and Porcello. Bullpen- Kimbrel , Kelly and Workman. Infield - Moreland , Holt and Kinsler. Outfield- Benintendi, Bradley and ( last but certainly not least ) Betts. For the most part , the replacements for these guys have been somewhat inadequate at best to absolutely terrible at worst. That is the difference between a truly great team and the team we are watching today.
  6. Maxie is a pot stirrer from way back.
  7. The thing is that the future will always be there . When the " future " arrives , you still can't spend because there is another " future " ahead. And so forth and so on. Sometimes you just have to go for it . Same with life in general , you can't always be looking to the future , sometimes you have to be in the moment.
  8. " Captain , if we just move these deck chairs over to this side , I think we will be able to avoid hitting the iceberg."
  9. Simply put , Mookie was traded because John Henry decided that the spending was becoming too much and he opted to start cutting back a bit and draw the line. . Basically , Mookie became too expensive for the budget.
  10. The panic , joy and general overreaction to opening day results are a rite of spring. Not to be taken seriously.
  11. Here we go again. Politics rears it's ugly head. Flashbacks to the late , unlamented Covid threads. The political bitterness of today can poison just about any aspect of life if we let it. How about ending this thread now , before it gets worse .
  12. Opening Day always seems to get more scrutiny than the games that follow. No reason for it , just the way it is.
  13. I think the root of Cashman's dilemma is his wanting to keep Stanton away from left field. That ties up the DH spot and Voit plays first. I don't know if that is worth the poor defense at short. That can kill you.
  14. I think that became apparent last season. Yet , he did nothing to rectify it. He seemed more concerned about keeping LeMahieu at second and having first base available for Voit.
  15. I don't know if they were counting on Yates to be the closer , but he is out for the year. All in all , they have some good , young talent , but just don't have the star power that the Yankees do.
  16. I was pretty sure the Mets would sign Lindor to an extension. They are determined to be among the elite teams.
  17. On paper , the Yankees clearly have the most talented team. The Jays might be a tad overrated. As for the Sox ; we could not ask for a better beginning. Opening Day at home versus possibly the worst team in MLB. A good start is important to generate confidence and fan interest.
  18. Back in the day , The Sporting News was all baseball . No other sports . And they had extensive minor league coverage . The Internet has pretty much killed the magazine industry.
  19. The " Killer B's " outfield made for watching winning, often exciting baseball. Obviously, Betts was the main factor. No matter how you cut it or where you place them , the current group just does not measure up to that. As far as going " all in " , it certainly does not seem to be the case . Just have to hope for the best . A relatively easy early season schedule should help us get off to a good start. Very important to take advantage of that and generate some confidence and enthusiasm.
  20. For what it's worth ( probably not much , considering their track record ) Sports Illustrated predicts the Sox will win 80 games and finish fourth in the A.L. East.
  21. I checked about the Sale situation with the Sox' chief medical officer , Dr. Vinnie Boombatz. He said , " Pain and injuries to the pitching arm are usually a cause for concern ." ( Dr. Boombatz always provides great insight into these things. )
  22. Every big contract is a roll of the dice , especially with pitchers . They are always one pitch away from a major injury. Sale is a great pitcher , but he has never won more than 17 games in a season. ( Now some analytics addict will remind us that wins are overrated. ) But if you want a great team , you have to roll those dice . No guts - No glory. You take a shot with a guy like Sale and hope for the best. There is no crying in baseball . It's only money. The owners are doing okay. And they can always raise ticket and concession prices yet again.
  23. Today's athletes are bigger , stronger , faster and better conditioned than those of the past . But not tougher or more durable. Some of it could be due to today's much higher salaries plus a general change in attitudes.
  24. As spring training winds down and opening day approaches, there is hope and optimism in the air. It will be important to get off to a good start and maintain that optimism. It looks to me that the early schedule is very conducive to doing just that. Let's get it on.
  25. I don't think teams have any inclination to go back to the system where the closer pitches multiple innings. Today's bullpens are deeper and more specialized. You have matchup guys , setup men and a mostly one inning closer . Most teams have several really hard throwers in the pen. It seems to work pretty well and the relievers are more effective with that system. The top closers of the past decade like Kimbrel , Chapman and Jansen have career ERAs considerably lower than Gossage.
