  1. The upcoming schedule features a lot of very beatable teams. Our final week of the season does likewise. That alone should provide some hope. Too many folks give up too easily.
  2. Barnes definitely could use a breather. Keep him down for a few days . This is a long grind after last year's short season. And as an All Star , he didn't even get the the All Star break to re-charge. As I have said so often , " Closin" ain't easy." Give him a break and see if he can bounce back.
  3. For sure , confidence and poise are important for success in anything. If doubt starts to creep in, you are headed for trouble in baseball or most anything else.
  4. We will never resolve these things. The analytic people will deny the existence of clutch, hot/cold , momentum, etc. all day. But it seems that the players, managers, coaches, etc. all believe in these things. Who is right? I don't know.
  5. This is an ideal chance to right the ship. Do well versus the Rays , then we get the woeful Orioles. After the Yankees, it's the very beatable, playing out the string, Rangers , Twins and Guardians. This schedule provides the perfect opportunity to turn things around. If we can't succeed here , we don't deserve to be a contender .
  6. Maybe. Personally, I don't quite get the connection between a free baserunner and Covid. I thought the idea was to prevent long extra inning games. But it just cheapens the game. And, regrettably, Covid is still around. And , regrettably, so is Manfred.
  7. Say what you will; The J.D. Martinez signing was a whole lot better that the Giancarlo Stanton one.
  8. Last night it looked like the Yanks were going for the record for blown saves in one game. Also, the " ghost runner " in extra innings is a travesty and an abomination. It should be grounds for removal of the idiot commissioner.
  9. Although it's been said many times, many ways, ( Besides Merry Christmas) a baseball season is a marathon, not a sprint. Folks keep forgetting that. They live and die with every game.
  10. Keep the faith. Everything's coming up roses from today on.
  11. It's fairly easy to make excuses and allowances for someone we like. Much harder to give credit to someone we don't like.
  12. I remember that well. And occasionally still watch the DVD.
  13. I think it would be hard to get a consensus on what actually constitutes high leverage.
  14. Your analysis is interesting. But it was Semien who hit the walk off homer off Barnes on Saturday. Get it right.
  15. When we get sick of arguing about clutch , we can argue about whether a hitter can get " hot" or be in a " cold spell." And is there such a thing as " momentum?"
  16. No matter what pitch is called or thrown, you still have to execute. Obviously, that doesn't always happen. Fast balls may lose a bit of velocity and get too much plate. Breaking balls can be off target or hang . It happens.
  17. Ever notice that with a lot of fans it's always about the Sox player. Be it good or bad. As if the opponent was invisible. Example: If J.D. hits a game winning homer. " What a great clutch at bat. " J.D. strikes out . " J.D. choked again." But if Springer hits a game winning homer. " Barnes choked. What a meatball." And if Springer strikes out. " Great pitching by Barnes." Folks , the other team has major leaguers too.
  18. Schwarber is a legit lefty power bat. He will help if he ever gets here. He never struck me as the most well conditioned guy on the field, but John Kruk had a pretty nice career.
  19. Vasquez is better. Plawecki is a pretty good backup catcher. I think we are getting a little desperate here lately with the team slumping.
  20. When you're a closer, they're all big moments . Even the GOAT, Mariano Rivera , is remembered for the few times he failed. Give Barnes a break. He will be alright. And we need him to be. Closers always need to have a short memory. Barnes knows that.
  21. Great. So while fans of the gaining teams can enjoy the excitement of a pennant race and possible post season ; Cubs fans should stop crying and take solace in the fact that Bleacher Report gave them an A on the deals.
  22. No question that deadline day was a disappointment. We just have to hope that having Sale and Houck in the rotation will give this club the boost that it sorely needs .
  23. There is a very short list of guys who can successfully close games for any length of time.
  24. Phils leading the N L East , but maybe D.D. sold off all the crops in Pa. Left them decimated . And how about the much maligned old man LaRussa in Chicago?
  25. For most of today , it looked like the Sox would win and the Rays would lose. Then it all went sour in a moment . Baseball will drive you nuts sometimes. You can always find scapegoats when you lose , but the fact is you win as a team and you lose as a team.
