  1. Should be a fun series at the Trop. Try to enjoy it , folks. Don't be so uptight. It's not good for you. Enjoy the baseball.Don't take it personally if a guy makes an error , strikes out or hangs a breaking ball. Don't hate him. Those things happen. The Curse is over. The Sox have had a lot of success in recent years. Watch the games . Have a beer. Relax. Here today, gone tomorrow. Dig it while it's here.
  2. Brasier has a 19.29 ERA ( that is not a typo ) in five appearances at AAA. I don't know if he is ready to be of help.
  3. The bullpen is the thing in baseball today. Just about every close game comes down to a battle of the bullpens. It starts with the closer , but a good supporting cast is also vital. You cannot overstate the importance of a strong bullpen.
  4. As Ringo Starr would say, " You know it don't come easy."
  5. Have to beat teams like Cleveland. They are better than some of the real bottom feeders , but they are ten games behind the ChiSox and realistically out of contention for a wild card , basically just playing out the string. A pretty good team not long ago , but systematically dismantled due to an owner who doesn't want to spend and an ever shrinking fan base. You should not lose to them.
  6. Much of the debate on here about Bloom or Cora or any of the various players that are mentioned is really about posters wanting to say, " See, I was right and you were wrong." And that's okay. It's just human nature. Nothing wrong with it. Carry on.
  7. Say what you will about Kevin Cash , but he takes whatever the front office gives him and gets the best out of it. You could make a strong case that he is the best manager in the game at this time.
  8. I don't watch Dr. Phil , but he's the only one I could think of.
  9. Dr. Phil could do a month's worth of shows on the mood swings in these game threads.
  10. It's looking more and more like we are headed to a one game play in at Yankee Stadium on Oct. 5. Winner goes to the playoffs , loser goes home. Risky business for both the Sox and Yankees , but that's how it looks right now.
  11. Matt Barnes is still the best bet to close games. He has shown that he can get the job done. This is not the time to experiment.
  12. Sounds good . Difficult , but achievable .
  13. Just for the heck of it , I looked up some of the best known closers of the past and present. The elite ones seem to be in the high 80's in save percentage. Mariano Rivera , the indisputable GOAT , is at 89% , with a probably unbreakable record of 652 saves . Craig Kimbrel appears to be the only one, past or present, with a 90% save percentage. And it is very doubtful that he will be able to maintain that rate as he pitches into the twilight of his career . So , 90% is indeed the gold standard , and then some.
  14. Don't blame us if we ever doubt ya. You know we couldn't live without ya. Red Sox !!!
  15. It's as if the Yankees are on a " hot streak" or something. But we know there is no such thing. However , a one game play-in against a rejuvenated Chris Sale has to be causing some angst in The Bronx.
  16. Incredibly, we still have people saying that D.D. " overpaid."
  17. You have to admit , it would save a lot of time.
  18. Horsehockey. I like it. Even more than " a lot of hooey ". Good job, Maxie.
  19. Folks on here love to complicate everything. Pick apart and analyze everything to death. They have a million and one stats. Your average Joe Fan doesn't do that. A save is a save. A good thing. A blown save is a bad thing. I look at it this way : A " save" represents a game that goes into the win column . A game you were leading and you won. The team with the most wins , wins the division , the playoffs , etc. The whole object is to win.
  20. In the " absence makes the heart grow fonder" department: We have folks waiting and hoping that 34 year old Ryan Brasier flies in , ala Mighty Mouse , to save the day. Brasier has seven career saves and eight career blown saves.
  21. Obviously , he can't do both jobs. It's just a matter of which one you think is more important.
  22. Using an extreme or unusual example to make a case is an old tactic here on TalkSox , as well as elsewhere. It doesn't change the fact that everything is amped up to the max in the ninth inning of a close game. Nothing in the earlier innings compares .
  23. Sure. We need many more stats to keep you busy.
  24. Verdugo has come through in big spots before. It's not like it's easy to do. Sometimes you do strike out. That's baseball.
  25. There is nothing more " high leverage" than trying to get the final outs to nail down a win.
