  1. A weird game , but kind of a fun one , in a weird kind of way. Reminiscent of some of the crazy Sox /Yankee games of the past. Obviously, it should have had a happier ending.
  2. Winning is still the bottom line. Bloom still has to win one. Same with the much heralded Billy Beane.
  3. LaMahieu is a better hitter in general , the OPS notwithstanding. A base hit ties the game. Stanton has had some awful at bats and looked overmatched against a pitcher like Nate. I think LaMahieu was more dangerous in that situation.
  4. Do as I say , not as I do.
  5. Exactly. It's easy for fans to expect all out recklessness, but sometimes discretion is the better part of valor. Especially when chasing a foul pop in the rain in July.
  6. Cora has received a lot of credit for the Sox turnaround this year. And rightly so. But he is not above criticism. I would like to hear his explanation for pitching to LaMahieu last night with first base open and Stanton on deck. It made no sense to me.
  7. Mookie is a future Hall of Famer. Verdugo is not. Downs may or may not ever amount to anything. But we did about as well as we could have hoped in that trade. Mookie is happy. The Dodgers are happy . And some Sox fans are happy. Some are not. Time to move on.
  8. It is shocking to me to watch Stanton bat. He seems too concerned about getting hit with the pitch. He has trouble standing in. Still has tremendous power, but it's hard to play the game if you have any fear of the ball.
  9. The cream does tend to rise to the top.
  10. Hard to believe that just three months ago, nearly everyone thought the Yankees were the better team. Now , the Sox are riding high, and the Yanks are a total mess. A disaster area. Goes to show you never can tell.
  11. If any of the three Met's hits had been hit a little harder , they would have been caught and Schiraldi would be a hero. As John Sterling says , " That's baseball Suzyn."
  12. Okay. Maybe not for the super serious, super knowledgeable members of Red Sox Nation.
  13. Looks like Judge , Urshela and Loaisiga are out for sure. When you're hot , you're hot. When you're not , you're not. The Yanks are the latter.
  14. It sounds crazy , but Downs gets extra attention because of his given name. If he were David Downs he would be just another hopeful.
  15. We are comparing Gary Gaetti , a .255 career hitter with a career OPS of .741 to Mariano Rivera , the greatest closer of all time , a unanimous Hall of Fame selection. It's been really hot lately. Pour a cold lemonade and crank up the A.C. a notch. You'll feel better soon.
  16. Barnes has done an outstanding job this year. He is one of the big reasons why they are in first place. No need to pick everything apart. It is a mistake to underestimate the importance of a closer. They don't pitch a lot of innings, but they are high leverage, high pressure innings with the game on the line. Barnes deserves the extension . Whether it is a fair deal or a " steal" doesn't matter. He is satisfied. Hope he keeps up the good work.
  17. Duran gets his first look at the notorious short right field porch in the Stadium.
  18. The call ups indicate that management feels this team has a serious shot at the brass ring, and intends to go for it. We'll see what happens at the deadline. Meanwhile, now is the chance to finish off the Yanks and crush any glimmer of hope they have left.
  19. The analytics driven crowd represents a very small percentage of fans. MLB is part of the entertainment industry. They need to focus on appealing to the larger base of fans. Speed up the pace of play by giving the umpires the responsibility of doing so. Promote the players much more than is being done. They are the face of the game. Theo is much better equipped for this than is Manfred.
  20. The Yanks apparently do not trust Chapman at all. The blown saves , especially the multiple run variety , always hurt the most. This was a bad one .
  21. The Cooler.
  22. Credit where it's due: Cole pitched brilliantly last night. He showed the heart of the lion and the eye of the tiger. A true ace.
  23. It would border on the bizarre for any contending team to trade their closer at the deadline. Barnes is not being dealt. Next year is still to be determined. No need to think about it yet.
  24. I would think that the Sox ( and probably all teams) have their own private internal scouting reports on their minor league prospects. Their evaluation may indeed be different than that of the general public.
