  1. By the way, Andujar is one of the worst defensive players in the league. If you want evidence, go to this thread: https://www.talksox.com/forum/threads/18721-Gleyber-and-Andujar and scroll down--I provide a couple of links. The Yankees should really be carrying a late inning defensive replacement for Andujar on their roster.
  2. Holder will probably never be the same again after this series. The Red Sox ruined his career. Good!
  3. LOL. This is a great post.
  4. No complaints from me. David Ross is so terrible, the worst announcer I've ever heard, he makes A-Roid sound like Vince Scully.
  5. The two teams in the race for the number one pick.
  6. I don't feel good about this game. (1) No confidence in Price. (2) The Red Sox have already won three out of four and that may take the edge or level of intensity away from their hitters and thus I'm expecting a sluggish offensive night with Red Sox hitters swinging at pitches out of the zone. Tanaka tries to get ahead and then expands the zone. If hitters don't lay off, Tanaka will pitch like an ace. If hitters lay off his junk out of the zone--the splitter in the dirt--you can knock Tanaka around. He doesn't beat you by throwing strikes. My lineup: Betts RF (he struck out 3 times on Saturday swinging at pitches out of the zone. If he does that again tonight, he gets benched for two games. I'm a tough manager) Benintendi LF Moreland 1b Martinez DH Bogaerts SS Bradley CF Holt 2b Leon C Renda 3b (will probably put together more professional at bats than Nunez)
  7. Interesting. But if a player is thrown out trying to steal, that out should also factor into OPS.
  8. Speaking of draft pick compensation, the other thing that really sucks about Pomeranz's season is that the Red Sox can't make him a qualifying offer and get a draft pick. I don't know about Kelly. I think the organization needs to figure out his worth and make him an offer but I wouldn't go higher if another team competes for his services. Yeah, Thornburg and Smith could be thrown into the mix for the closer competition as well. Also, the Red Sox could consider signing D.Robertson rather than K.Herrera. I'm most intrigued by Z.Britton, though, but it is hard to figure out what he will earn on the free agent market.
  9. I didn't realize Kimbrel has walked as many as he has this year. His walk ratio is over 4.00 is that is unacceptable (21 walks in 46 IP). Elite closers don't walk batters at that pace. As far as next year goes, get the draft pick for Kimbrel, and save some money on the closer position. I would be curious to know what Britton will end up with, but it won't be the 80 million that Kimbrel gets on the free agent market. The Red Sox need a bridge closer that will get them to Feltman. Britton is a nice option or maybe there is a salary dump guy, with one year remaining on his contract, that can be obtained in a trade. Maybe sign Kevin Herrera and let Herrera and Barnes compete for the closer role. By saving money on the closer, the Red Sox can in turn use that money to extend Bogaerts and Betts. Eric Van believes Bogaerts will come cheaper than expected--(1) there are many good shortstops in the league at present and (2) Bogaerts defensive metrics are not great.
  10. The Yankees made a mistake when they didn't acquire G.Cole and didn't find another ace starter at the deadline, i.e., Degrom.
  11. I never understood why stolen bases never played with the sabermetric people. True, they don't like giving up outs, which is why they don't support bunting (Cora rarely bunts) but if you can turn singles into doubles with a stolen base, that would seem to be a pretty valuable thing from a statistical point of view. At some point, maybe the sabermetric people will come to appreciate the stolen base more than they currently do.
  12. There really is no way the Red Sox can lose the division round when their opponent blows their best starter in the wild card game and the Red Sox have Sale, perhaps the best pitcher on planet, for two games. That's a series the Red Sox simply cannot lose. Sale would have to let them down, but if the Red Sox manage his innings, he should be strong for October. I would keep Sale on the DL for one more start. The ALCS will be really tough, though. That might be the true World Series, as the two AL teams will likely be better than any of the NL teams.
  13. The thing I didn't like about today's game was the 3 strikeouts by Betts. All third strikes were swinging strikes with Betts chasing pitches out of the zone. In the first two strikeouts, Betts expanded the zone by swinging at high fastballs. In his third strikeout, Betts expanded the zone by swinging at a ball in the dirt. That's the Yankees pitching staff philosophy. They usually start off with fastballs to get ahead and then stop throwing strikes and get the batter to chase. Tanaka is an ace pitcher when teams chase. Tanaka is a bottom of the rotation starter when teams lay off his splitter in the dirt and force him to throw strikes. My lineup for Sunday: Betts RF (I was thinking about benching him due to his unacceptable at bats on Saturday but I'll overlook it this time) Benintendi LF Moreland 1b Martinez DH Bogaerts SS Bradley CF Holt 2b Leon C Renda 3b (get Nunez out of there -- please! OPS+ 76).
  14. I don't see Ockimey as a future star or middle of the order bat. But could he develop into a 20-25 HR first baseman with high on base percentage, a 6th hitter in the lineup? That would be a pretty good player especially during his controllable years.
  15. I agree that Ockimey will continue to strikeout in the majors. But he should continue to walk too. He has power, but needs to develop more power. That power could be right around the corner in his development. Without looking at the numbers, I'm pretty sure A.Judge developed into a better major league player than his minor league numbers would suggest. This can happen when raw talent and potential becomes actual and sometimes that can happen at the major league level rather than the minor league level. The hope is that Ockimey at age 25 will be hitting more HRs than Ockimey at 21 or 22. I don't think that is a rare occurrence. This was certainly true for Judge. The 25 years old Judge hit with more power than the 22 year old Judge.
  16. This is close to the lineup that I predicted last night. My lineup had Pearce in there for another game with Moreland sitting. I wonder why they made that move--JD Martinez fourth in the lineup instead of third?
  17. On the topic of the Cashman and comparing Cashman to Dombrowksi, someone on that popular Yankees forum criticized Cashman for being too much like Ben Cherrington. That is, Cashman is too protective of his prospects--won't trade them for major league needs--and Cherrington was this way as well. I thought that was an interesting perspective on what has gone wrong with the Yankees and how they have been managed by Cashman. Of course, we all know that Dombrowski does not have that problem--he was more than happy and willing to ship out elite prospects for Sale, Kimbrel, and others.
  18. One of my favorites. The Padres don't exactly have the most glorious history and he was the face of the franchise. He took less money to stay in San Diego, that doesn't happen too often. Chewing tobacco is a killer. He went through a lot of suffering in trying to beat the cancer but then gave up. That's how bad it got.
  19. I've heard he is banged up. If fully healthy, maybe they would have promoted Lin over Renda.
  20. I would be very surprised if Travis remains on the 40 man after the season. He will be a minor league free agent--it appears he doesn't have the bat to be a major league player. Ockimey will definitely be protected. I wouldn't protect Chavis, get the PED guys off the roster and out of the farm system, but the Red Sox probably will protect him.
  21. LOL. I still don't understand what Andujar did wrong on Thursday night on the J.Bradley play at home. After the game, Boone blamed Andujar for that play more than J.Holder, who threw behind Bradley and didn't run Bradley back toward third base. Maybe Boone was watching a different game. It is also interesting to note that Andujar was not playing 3b on Friday (he was the DH). Was Boone penalizing him?
  22. (1) A different set of expectations for a guy making 8.5M versus 500,000. (2) It's great that Pomeranz had an excellent 2017 season, but he didn't exactly endear himself to Red Sox fans by laying an egg in the playoffs. (3) Johnson was drafted and developed by the Red Sox -- fans usually feel a closer attachment (and more tolerance) for players like that. (4) Brian Johnson has been a better pitcher this year. (5) True, when we compare their last start, Pomeranz gave up 2 runs, Johnson gave up 4. But Johnson faced a better lineup on a bigger stage (the Yankees) and had better peripherals 2 BB and 11 Ks. In contrast, Pomeranz walked 4, hit 2 batters, and had 3 Ks. If we look at the peripherals, Johnson was quite impressive whereas Pomeranz was the same old s***.
  23. Cessa went 3.2 innings on Thursday, meaning he isn't available to start on Saturday. Why didn't the Yankees use Cole on Thursday instead of Cessa? Can't Cole go 3 innings? If Cole goes 3 innings, you would save Cessa for Saturday. If you're not going to use Cole in that situation, when are you going to use him? That seemed like the perfect spot for Cole. EDIT: Cole has not pitched since July 31. In early July, he pitched 2 innings of relief for the Yankees twice. Cole, of course, was a failed starter with the Nats. Thus, the Yankees could have stretched him out for 3 innings on Thursday (I presume). As far as I know, no one has criticized Boone for using Cessa over Cole on Thursday.
  24. The hope is that he is just beginning to tap into his power potential. As many scouts say, power is often the last tool to develop. He looks like a high strikeout guy, but this will be balanced somewhat by his high walk totals, a nice aspect of his offensive game.
  25. I would be very surprised if Mookie plays 2b again this season. It's the kind of move that would have to be made in the offseason, giving Betts an entire spring training to adjust. I'm assuming Bogaerts returns on Saturday, moving Holt to 2b. Alternatively, maybe Renda gets the start at 2b and Holt gets the day off. I'm assuming Pearce gets another start at 1b? My lineup prediction for Saturday: Betts RF Benintendi LF Pearce 1b Martinez DH Bogaerts SS Bradley CF Nunez 3b Holt 2b Leon C It sounds like Renda is another utility player type. Along with 2b, his best position, he can play 3b, LF, and RF. He even has some experience at 1b.
