  1. Yep. The Yankees lineup is so stacked with right handed bats that the lefty formula doesn't work anymore. What lefty batter really scares you in the Yankees lineup? Didi can do some damage but that is all. The rest are right handed: Judge, Stanton, Voit, Sanchez, Torres, Andujar. As such, if the Yankees win the wild card game, Eovaldi should get a start against them with Rodriguez or Price coming out of the rotation for the division series. The Yankees were counting on Bird being a major factor and providing balance to their lineup. That didn't happen.
  2. On the topic of Eovaldi, if the Red Sox play the Yankee in the division round, there is no way that Eovaldi is not in the starting rotation for that series. The Yankees have hit the lefties--Price and Rodriguez--pretty hard while Eovaldi has had much more success against the Yankees right handed lineup. This seems like a no-brainer to me. Sale pitches in games 1 and 5. The other 3 starts go to Eovaldi, Porcello, and EITHER Price or Rodriguez. Against Oakland, it is a different story, but moving Eovaldi to the bullpen and starting Price AND Rodriguez in a short division series against the Yankees is a recipe for disaster.
  3. Agreed: Pomeranz can't be on the postseason roster. B.Phillips is interesting. I wonder if Phillips might be the Red Sox best starting option at 3b in the playoffs? That is, he might give you better defense than the error prone Devers, along with more professional at bats, and Phillips might be a better offensive player than Nunez.
  4. That might suggest injury or, alternatively, maybe a lefty was on the mound? Devers can't hit lefties. That would still be a weird move--we are talking about a meaningless Triple A game. When Devers returns, I seriously doubt he plays against lefties. Moreover, I could see Nunez taking over the starting 3b job in October. Devers makes too many errors at 3b and an error in a key playoff game could be the difference between winning and losing.
  5. I want to find Leon's catcher ERA for the month of August -- does anyone know where I would find that info?
  6. The hope is that Sale isn't seriously injured and will pitch like Chris Sale when he returns. E-Rod is returning and Price has been surprisingly excellent. That is three really good starting pitchers. The fourth spot is Porcello. Eovaldi goes to the bullpen in October. Assuming Sale is healthy going forward, I don't see an issue with the starting staff at all. But sure, if Sale has a lingering health issue, this team isn't going to win a championship. The bullpen is a bigger concern, IMO.
  7. It is interesting that a lot of great players were terrible managers/coaches.
  8. That's true. He was more of a personality than a guy who would inform you about baseball.
  9. Leon can't hit a slow pitched softball. He would swing through it.
  10. Working with Pedro did this guy wonders. Why am I not surprised by that? I like Pedro, but I'm not sure if I trust him as a coach.
  11. The thing about Rizzuto: he never had any pretensions of being a great announcer. For me, the worst announcer that I ever heard was probably Rusty Staub. The worst announcer I've heard recently is David Ross. He is horrendous.
  12. The Yankees are getting desperate. They don't have the starting pitching to go anywhere this year. Cashman needed to fix that problem but failed to. He has sucked in this area in previous seasons as well -- he isn't the best evaluator of starting pitching, it's his main weakness and goes back many years.
  13. He will be back in three weeks. LOL. Clint Frazier has been out a long time with a concussion. Weird stuff. The Yankees won't be able to trade Frazier in the off-season, he basically has zero trade value until he proves he can play a full season without concussion issues. The Yankees acquired McCutchen: http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/24528314/new-york-yankees-acquire-andrew-mccutchen-trade-giants
  14. I would rather have a Dave Roberts type of guy on the playoff roster than burn two spots on Vazquez AND Leon (I'm assuming Swihart is basically a lock to make the playoff roster).
  15. Loved the decision to pinch hit for Sandy Leon. Swihart played a key offensive role in the 7th and 9th innings. It is time to make him the starting catcher. Dellin Betances -- LOL. New York sports radio is going to be all over Boone tomorrow for using Britton in the 8th and Betances in the 9th.
  16. Especially on nights like this when Leon has to take some blame for Porcello's struggles. If Leon would do a better job back there, maybe he finds a way to get Porcello through that first inning. Leon's catcher ERA has gone up ever since Sale went on the DL. Imagine that. As far as Leon's offense goes, he has no offensive game. His bat is comparable to a guy in the independent league. His OPS+ is 52.
  17. The Red Sox will have an interesting decision to make in the postseason--do they put Leon or Vazquez on the roster? That is like deciding between tweedledum and tweedledee. It doesn't make sense to put both on the roster, since they are similar players.
  18. Oh that's right, the independent league baseball player Sandy Leon is catching tonight. I blame this game on him--he isn't doing enough for the starting pitcher. He has been failing this pitching staff lately. Get Swihart in there, at least he has some potential as a hitter.
  19. Nice job by Porcello locking up the 4th spot in the playoff rotation. I would prefer giving the fourth spot to Eovaldi, with Porcello pitching out of the bullpen (he is the weakest starter out of the four) but since Porcello will be totally useless as a bullpen piece, it makes more sense to move Eovaldi to the bullpen and keep Porcello in the rotation.
  20. Love the decision to pinch hit for Leon, who failed the Red Sox pitching staff today, and has the hitting skills of a back up Triple A catcher.
  21. And maybe this explains why the Red Sox were open to trading Buttrey--they felt Lakins was ready and liked him more. If not for something like that, trading away Buttrey didn't make sense. You don't trade away relief depth when you are trying to win a championship.
  22. Kimbrel picked the most inopportune time to turn into a lousy reliever. If he keeps it up, he won't get the contract he wants and the Red Sox will watch another team celebrate in October. If Kimbrel keeps walking batters and giving up leads, the Red Sox won't be able to make him a qualifying offer.
  23. Based on the way this bullpen is trending, Cora has to reconsider last night's strategy of taking B.Johnson out of the game as early as he did. If that happens in Johnson's next start, I think you keep him in, hoping to get an extra inning out of him. His pitch count wasn't insanely high and while Brian Johnson isn't going to remind anyone of Sandy Koufax, going to the bullpen that early isn't a winning strategy anymore. It is what it is. You sometimes have to stick with the starter for longer than you would like if your bullpen arms aren't getting it done.
  24. Given all of the current problems in the Red Sox bullpen, I don't know how they wouldn't call him up. His Triple A numbers were definitely deserving of a major league promotion. Buttrey has earned it and the Red Sox are desperate, put those two factors together and Buttrey reaches the big leagues in a Red Sox uniform this year if Dombrowski didn't trade him.
  25. It amazes me that MLB TV is covering/discussing every game but this one. Apparently, I'll need to wait about 5 hours before they show some highlights of this game.
