We are going through a period where the 1-5 bats have been cooled off. Partly we were facing good pitching. Hard to put ones finger on what is goiing on, perhaps just one of those slump periods. The Yankee pitching won't be easy either, so our guys need to pick it up.
He had major command issues last night although his velocity was slightly better than the first ttime back. He threw nearly 50% balls and hit a couple of guys. That won't work for him and us but it is still possible his command returns. He still really only hass two pitches, which isn't really enough for a starter these days.
Our top of the lineup guys have looked bad in a number of recent games. Yes, the pitching they faced has been excellent the last two days, but they just haven't looked like they were competing. Men on base, nothing happens. Are they tired or in a collective malaise? They need to get it together since they will no doubt face good pitching in any playoffs.
A takeaway from tonight is that Swihart has to be an integral part of the team. His was excellent behind the plate and hit better than a lot of Sox players. Right now he seems to hit better than either Leon or Vasquez so there will be an interesting decision going forward.
A second takeaway is that Kinsler is an improvement at 2nd base defensively and his hitting looked better than some.
I knew he looked heavy but was shocked when I saw that number listed for him. I am a little taller and weigh about 232 and always get ribbed by my softball buddies as being to slow (too heavy). I'm going on 78 and am definitely not getting paid to play. This is a 21 yo kid who is likely to sustain avoidable injuries if he doesn't lose some of that weight.
The Sox are lacking a good lefty relief pitcher, so if they did try to fill that position I could understand. Don't think Pom is the right guy to fill that role. The only guy on the market who fits that bill is Jake Diekman and he a 31 yo Texas setup man. We would have to lose one of our right handers to make that move so I don't think it is likely, but who knows.
Sounds like DD has made some overtures that we not accepted and that he is waiting to see if one of those comes to fruition. He is willing to wait for the other guy to come to him now. If a bluebird flies in he won't reject it but it has to show that it will improve the Sox.
To clear space for those we already have, Lin will go when Kinsler is added (probably today). I understand that Devers is on the 10 day DL but with both a sore shoulder and a hamstring, he may well be out for longer. I didn't realize that he is 6' 237 #s. Pretty heavy for a 21 yo and approaching Pablo heavy. Kid should lose a few and he would probably improve his durability. When he gets back, we will have a decision to make about who goes down. Same with Vaz. E-Rod supposedly is doing well. Ligament damage for a pitcher sounds pretty severe. He may be out for several more weeks despite the rosy statements coming out about his progress. Pom may make the decision for us today if he has another poor outing.
I expect Pom will show us tonight that he isn't capable of being a starter unless he regains more health and more velocity. I even question him in the BP. Too bad as a healthy Pom pitching as well as he did last year would really help the team. I doubt if many would flock to take him in a trade. I wouldn't trade either Holt or Nunez as we need them for the stretch run.
I was one of those who hoped for a strengthening up of our infield who had reached the point of playing both Nunez and Holt every day. I saw that as one injury away from a serious problem. Kinsler is an excellent move and may still keep us away from the second tier of the luxury tax limit. Others will report on that. He is a pro with good defense and is a professional hitter. Good move. I would have preferred a younger long term solution to second but that can happen at another time.
Great end to a game where our bottom guys did the hitting. Nunez, Holt, JBJ and Swihart made the difference and our pitching was great. Price and the relief corp.
Worth the entire over 4 hours.
I really like our outfield as well.None better. and I agree about the positive thoughts about Thornburg and now Eovaldi showed well on his first outing.
The trade deadline is upon us at 4:00 pm tomorrow and word is that we are looking at many possibilies for setup men to bolster that part of our team and also possibly Beltre or some other infielder who can help us through the busy schedule ahead while some of our DL players recover. I will wait for front office announcements with interest in how they decide to go azt the deadline.
Now only 2 days for DD to make a move. Maybe he can get something positive done but if he can't we still have the best team in baseball. The Eovaldi trade helped us today. We start to play the big boys going forward. Like to be our best against them. Price against the Yankees is worrisome, but at least Judge won't be in uniform for that series.
This guy throws strikes, has excellent velocity, has at least 4 pitches (4 seamer, slider, cutter and splitter) and doesn't seem to get riled (no walks). Right now, he is doing a pitching job to be admired. Good pickup for the team.
I'm hoping for a 2nd baseman that we can carry forward into next season. Don't expect Pedroia will be back this year and not a regular next year. Let go of the idea of the Luxury Tax 2nd tier and go for broke now.
