A Realistic View of the 2025 Red Sox: Part II
dannycater replied to moonslav59's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
"They’ve hit .194 in six games since trading Devers and averaged 3.16 runs. Defensive mistakes become magnified in that environment."...worrying about Devers defense was the problem or started the acrimony between player and organization. Sure seems like a lot of positions have defensive issues. I'd rather have a consistent RBI producer and his deficiencies over the utility clown car that exists now -
Betts, Devers..you can try to replace them, but it ends up being too much spent for lesser production...but hey Henry and Breslow can do no wrong, so I'm sure when they sign the next 300 to 700 million player they will get us another Carl Crawford or maybe they will try to sign an "exotic" and get us another Yoshida.
-
you're right, Henry owes us nothing, Kraft owes us nothing...hey I got a great idea, let's just give up on any criticism based on championships won already...nothing matters anymore...not the 2020s in SoxLand that's for sure...B's are heading this route too....GM are the geniuses and winning doesn't matter.
-
I made a joke of Devers traded to open up the DH spot...I'm stunned you like that option. It's dumbing down your lineup. 18.6 mil is on Henry...that he is a Castillo failure means he needs to stay away from Boston, needs to basically go away. Not embraced to open up a lineup spot...god, people are literally so rose-colored glasses in here to the point where the party line is apparently gospel. Carry on.
-
Okay, let's look at it another way...in the history of MLB, do you know how many clubhouses had personalites, players who hated each other--the 1970s Oakland A's led the league in drama...who cares..it's talent and what you do on the field that counts...worrying about poor Devers "affecting" young guys is silly. They are not impressionable kids, they are adults who have lives, make money, get contracts to support their families for years to come...worrying about "dissension" is as overrated as anything in sports...
-
over the top, sure, but I can dissect a baseball game and you can say it's a defensive play, a strikeout, a pitching performance, an error, there are like 7,000 things that affect a team winning and losing...hitting a HR is instant offense and in low scoring games in today's MLB of exit velocity and upper cuts, it's a big thing. So over the top, sure.
-
hey notin, long time...love your posts over the years...I think what I laugh at is "forcing the issue." I can see actions and attitude that can cause that..except here's the thing--he was under contract for how many years? Who has control, the team or the player? To me, he can pout and hit 30 jacks and drive in 100 RBI and have a high OBP/OPS...who gives a s*** about his "effect" on clubhouse..it's not like the team is .700, and oh yeah, at DH he was destroying ball and Sox have been on a pretty good run...

Devers Ready To Play WHEREVER The Giants Need Him To
dannycater replied to king koji's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
This was me on Sox pretty much this season, I couldn't get a discount from DirectTV so they gave me MLB Innings rest of year for free--so that meant I could watch pretty much any Sox game I wanted. Then the Sox just went to pieces and I stopped even recording the games to watc h later. So the Sox started playing better, and I still didn't record games or watch them live. Lousy fan right? So I was thinking about going to see Sox at Angels because in my mind I felt I can still see Devers hit and that's enticing and the connection from '18 WS team. Then he got traded. I still was watching Sox highlights in those condensed games and the short version or even Twitter--Anthony's first MLB HR. And then I realized wait the Giants are playing and I got MLB...so I click the game for the Giants broadcast and I watched a few innings live--and then Devers finally comes up and rips a first pitch single after Mike Yaz singled--Giants didn't rally and lost to Cleveland...what's my point? I really wanted to see Devers hit and I guess I must have liked him a lot to want to see him in a Giants jersey. The fans were excited and embraced him as the team already. You can spin the Devers trade all you want, including the money freedom aspect that Globe's Chris Gasper wiped out (700 mill offer to Soto was out there from Sox)--but the reality is if you are a long-time fan, you start losing interest when every marquee Sox veteran gets jettisoned for whatever reason--contract, poor recent performance, or disgruntled, or felt mistreated--it just gets old. Watching Devers in a SF jersey--that was fresh. Also sad for me, but at same time felt like Marchand on Florida---NHL--totally different scenario, but the end result--B's jettison last connection to Cup, Devers last connection to WS title--lets all get excited about kids I don't know and I don't know if they will become the next Devers, the next Betts, the next Marchand...I feel like I watch small market teams instead of the champions both the Sox and B's were and at the very least were competitive all the time. .500 teams or missing playoffs make it difficult to continue watching. Losing the players that I would purchase a ticket for make it continually worse. -
A Realistic View of the 2025 Red Sox: Part II
dannycater replied to moonslav59's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
It's fair and you are an optimist, at least as long as I've remembered...that and Tommy Harper and the Pilots. And defensive catcher ERA. glad you are still here doing your thing. -
My only problem with Devers was that he refused to speak English in interviews...I think he should have and should still learn the English language as so many others in all sports have done to better communicate with the mainstream media in the U.S. But other than that, I appreciated his career as a Sox and his talent and hitting. He was a part of the 18 Sox champs and I'm sad to see him go.

I don't think he was being personal with you. Just my opinion.

"Rafael Devers was one of 14 players who started every game for their team going into the weekend. Of that group, only Aaron Judge and Pete Alonso have a higher OPS".....that was from Sunday notes by Abraham in Globe

Exactly...this has been a rebuilding year for so many years it's become a running joke. Honestly, and I think most of you fans are pretty great guys and I'm sure made friends on this board and love talking Sox...but it's trades like this and then the reaction of it's always the right thing to do when it's not...it's part of what had me lose interest in this chatroom (again, just me, not criticizing individuals or even the idea of chatroom--go Sox and keep it going)...but it gets old, the narrative with this franchise...why is Breslow the GM? Because the previous few also were Henry way of thinking and it cost them their jobs. Chaim and Breslow are getting directives from Henry. And Henry ultimately is the King--4 Sox titles--and we should all be thankful and to quote someone telling me I can't be critical of the Bruins dumping Marchand---we had our championships and now we are all spoiled brats...what? I don't think so, I like winning and all of our Boston teams should want to win, not find ways to kill viewership or kill fans spirits...Betts was an icon and they wouldn't pay him, but they sure as hell paid Story--you really want that comparison? I don't. I don't care for the high salaries, but Sox invested in Devers...then they screwed it up with him. He was hardly a problem until the Sox communication process and dealings to replace him at 3b became a problem. The Sox were finally playing great baseball--swept Yankees---getting back into WC race--Raffy settled in as best hitter and a DH...nah, let's blow it up....Again.

yes, as Raffy's actions will make adult rookies think "oh wow, I can act like an ass? Terrific, I wanted to be in a country club, 25 cabs for 25 guys atmosphere." Grow up, all of you. It's all ********. The Sox were invested to win and then they did 2004, 2007, 2013, 2018...then Henry lost interest and that's the end of it. This was just no different than so many other Sox errors in judgment, errors in communication, errors in what should be the prime directive-winning. Future book is what I'm seeing and it's kick the can down the road (sorry about using that cliche)...they don't want to win. They don't care, they care about making front offices happier than the players on the field.

Betts trade. Verdugo four okay seasons as Sox, pretty much not all that. Downs 6 for 39 as a Sox in 2022, then gone Connor Wong after a good 2024, 0 RBI in 71 plate appearances this year, .145. There is your future book.

This is the Red Sox brass quote to media: "We have a responsibility to our fans to put out the best product possible in order to win, but in order to do this, we have to make sure that our owner is happy. So when when one of our employees is not a "team player," and when we are alerted also of a possibility to find a Premier League available to help our owner's other club, we must act on it. In the end, we know we are making our fanbase happy and that's also why we keep raising prices. While we have your attention, we have added a new Purple People Eaters jersey for Thursday home games. They are already available on our Sox website. We have new Roman Anthony jerseys too!! Go Sox!"
