I also find it funny that 2 guys that were being shopped by the media most of the last few months--Rafaela and Duran--have been so good during the streak and both have taken off in a number of ways. You have to trust the talent of guys and Romy/Refsnyder have been the ultimate righty v. lefty hitters--these are the ways of winning if you execute and how it makes Cora look like a genius too.

I like your rant...I agree, the light dark show does not work for TV--it looks terrible and it takes away from the excitement. The in-game interviews haunt me on NESN for hockey too--in that case talking over intense action, missing a goal call, etc. I'm into old guy rants as an old guy. I miss Eck and Remy.

A Realistic View of the 2025 Red Sox: Part II
dannycater replied to moonslav59's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
hey, I'm the first to admit I was gloom/doom after Devers deal...right now, the Sox are playing inspired baseball, but I think Anthony, Mayer, Romy, Story, Duran, and especially Rafaela are all swinging the stick in clutch situations and extending innings...the pitching is clicking instead of just a Crochet quality start--lot of things going Sox way. It's how you put together a 7-game win streak--I don't look at opponents, I look at wins. Go Sox -
Great job by Sox of late, hitting all over love Raffy/Duran/Story/Romy/Anthony all swinging hot sticks. Getting enough pitching, good to see Gio/Buehller good starts...hey 6-game win streak, I'll take it...4 games over .500 and this will be the time they trade Duran or do something stupid--please tell management don't screw this up with another roster movement. Go Sox!

should we remind Sox exactly what type of year Betts had in 2018..it was off the charts fantastic. -
6/29 Jays vs Sox
dannycater replied to SPLENDIDSPLINTER's topic in Mike Grace Memorial Game Thread Forum
always a narrative on any ex-Sox on the way out the door. Never the Sox front office being blamed enough. Always a Sox exec leaks something too to the media about said ex-Sox. Seems to always be a "leak." ummm.... -
6/29 Jays vs Sox

If you have talent on the Sox, apparently the answer is yes -
No, this is not short term pain and it's still not the right move. Go back to the start of your post--It wasn't just Cora loving Raffy full-time DH it was Raffy himself he made a great adjustment and settled in after a rough start to the season as a full-time DH. He was perfectly placed, and like you said no fielding errors. Look, you got this guy who is making a fortune and is the marquee hitter on the team. There is zero reason for Breslow to push anything or even Cora if it were the case. Raffy I think was taking some groundballs anyway to stay fresh but if he wasn't good enough to play 3rd, then the Sox felt he was perfect at DH--then Breslow caused all of this...to not even get back quality players in the trade made it even worse than Betts trade as at least you got Verdugo (head case or not) and I guess Wong (who was super last year and crap this year). You can all feel what you feel about clubhouse cancer, effect whatever--Raffy wasn't killing the clubhouse, he was killing the baseball for Sox which is what the 300 mil purchased. Raffy may not have been a first-class individual but he was doing his job. And the Sox traded him at without a doubt the dumbest time ever and worse right after the highs of beating the Yankees. Incredibly daft timing and certainly nothing to brag about or be happy about from the Sox small market approach to winning.
-
all good, I think one aspect of having an interpreter all the time is you feel like as a fan a disconnect..Or at least I never could quite get what Raffy was really saying..maybe that part is..Lost in Translation.
-
Sox still have 6 innings to blow it.
-
I learned French in high school, I still know some of the basic stuff, and a few French Canadians along the way that I've met I think were impressed a bit that I did know phrases, and understood even when they were talking French to a friend in person.
-
None, I have never been out of the country...However, I know many a person who live in LA County who won't learn a word of English and they've been here forever. Look I get the other side, but I'm actually talking more about both Ohtani and Devers--you are making your living because of American fans paying your salaries and you are being covered by English-speaking mainstream announcers/broadcasters..I'm not saying you don't continue using an interpreter for interviews overall, I'm saying make an attempt to learn and who knows you say something funny in English and guess what now more people are loving that charm. Tiant used broken English but was a always a hysterically funny interview at times because he tried. What's the harm of taking a class and learning the English language a bit. Taylor Swift goes to concerts across the World and goes out of her way to learn words, phrases in other languages to show appreciation for their fanship.
-
I say 300 million, make the attempt. Feel same about Ohtani.
-
I feel like once you are that rich and that immersed in the Pro Sports culture, you got to work that much harder to communicate in an English-speaking country. And your point is well taken, but then again Pastranak had to learn the language, Bergeron was French and became affluent English, just to name a few. Ortiz got to a point where he is very fluent in English.
-
It should have been a very aggressive approach by somebody in organization whether it be Cora or another employee that Devers be told he can no longer play 3b. But this also is one flaw of Devers in the first place too--the English translation issue--he never wanted to learn English--or get more proficient--the way so many Boston latin athletes did a great job of getting better and better over the years in the communication game. Today's society has allowed for this need for translation--my own junior high school had spanish translation for the graduation...it was a total joke--absolute waste of time...and done inconsistently by a wok California principal--(sorry about the politics)--but this applies to Devers too. He was making 300 mil and sorry he needed to learn English--he needed to become a better communicator in USA media. Instead he went Ohtani--who also needs to learn the language for the same reasons--he has to learn English period...all foreign players need to acclimate. But no one wanted to approach Devers and maybe that was one reason. He was insulated in his own little world. But he became a DH and I was fine with that--isn't that what everyone wanted??? He transitioned after a really terrible first few weeks--then he just went off. Who doesn't want the next JD in lineup 162 games

I chose to stay away from this room for the most part last few years, I returned because I'm bored (ha). No, but I was excited about the '25 team when they started to go on that winning run...It was like hey wait a second we got something going, Raffy was doing great at DH, Bregman was injured but Mayer was swinging the bat, and then you had Rafaela having his best run of the season at plate to go with mostly good pitching, and then Anthony's rise to the MLB roster...and the good times rolled...until the Devers trade...what a disaster, and again what an indictment on the Sox ability to just rip the fun out of anything close to winning. But I admire a lot of you for continuing to be here and comment on Sox baseball, mostly a losing battle and arguments about losing because that's been the Sox going on too many seasons now. Accepting mediocrity.
-
spot on. Managing a lesser roster is a near impossible task. So maybe just fire Breslow (they won't)....and fire Cora too if only to bring in a new voice and one who may be great with the kids rather than just have a good rapport with the Latin players in dugout. Managers come and go, there is no upside with Cora since the original changeover to get rid of the '18 roster. Breslow has worsened the team and its direction and that has to change too. But it comes down to Henry and the reality is he is quite happy he has 280 more mil to spend on his soccer franchise since the Devers unload.
-
What a stupid take...The Sox were on a high, winning, you know what you should want as a fan when Devers was hastily dealt while Bregman on injured list. So wallowing about how bad the Sox are and then saying Devers won't make a difference for Giants--sorry he made a difference for Sox as a consistent run producer. What he does for Giants has zippo effect on the Sox...what he did for Sox and the bad clubhouse effect he had on the team--so he had to go right?...yeah, right, the whole stupid narrative. Breslow is a an all-time joke as GM, his rookie mistakes and his admission of poor communication....that just adds to how idiotic his business move on Devers (unload the contract) was. At the time of the trade, the Sox were without a doubt playing their best baseball of the season. And Breslow killed the '25 team in its tracks.
-
In 2018, Cora had Betts 1.078 OPS, .346, 47 doubles, 32 HR, had JD 1.031 OPS, 43 HR, 130 RBI, had Xander 23 HR, 103 RBI, had Benintendi 16 HR, 87 RBI, had Devers 21 HR, 68 RBI, had a great defensive CF in Bradley, had Vazquez-Leon catching duo, had Mitch Moreland at 1b, added Steve Pearce to be a clutch HR hitter in playoffs, a real bench guy in Holt, had Price, Eavoldi, Sale, Porcello, Kimbrel (fell apart in postseason)....in other words, they had monster talent and real MLB players. He has a glorified minor league team with a few over the hill veterans, one real pitching ace, a real closer, and that's it. This isn't losing the clubhouse, it's grasping for straws with the absolute joke of a roster these past few seasons. It's a clown car. I'd probably still fire him, but it's all on the front office.
-
I love the narrative that the Sox were put in a corner, or they were pressured, or Raffy pressured them, or a demand had to be met...bull all to the you know what...Sox knew exactly what it was doing and it was killing the '25 Sox in its tracks...You can't always time a deal, but the Sox were on a terrific high and run and they had to do it...they just couldn't help themselves and too many fans have eaten it up and said it's justified...it's incredible how the Sox themselves didn't take into consideration Devers' offensive value and his contributions or why they gave him a ton of money in first place..you want to compete, you pay for real talent.
-
The Sox were on fire, on a roll, everything was clicking, the wins, the Wild Card race and then Henry did it..he trades Devers...and apparently team spokesman and full-time RH only batter Refsnyder (honestly love the guy and he does produce and he is a consistent hitter) said he couldn't understand why the hitting dropped off this trip...let's see...ummm...must be a clubhouse problem affecting the young kids...ummm...yeah, that's it, that's the ticket. So Devers trade did what? KILLED THE SOX IN 2025
