  1. Johnson is sort of this year's Dana Kiecker or Al Nipper. Or in other words, I'm going EROD, Wright before him. I like BJ, but he can get hurt very quickly in a playoff game start. But BJ is a better relief option than Pom and you have to have a lefty in some situations, so he might be better suited in that role. EROD will get his innings.
  2. I would rather see Betts, Bogie, Beni, JD, Pearce-Moreland, Kinsler, Holt-Nunez, Leon, Bradley
  3. Kimmi, he is very technical and looks to barrel up, but he often does swing at bad pitches and can look really bad, but I really believe it's why he has become this video/technical hitter..to keeping bad at bats to a minimum...yet he's hitting .332 2nd in AL to Betts and has HR and RBI numbers off the charts...so I can live with any bad at bat by him. It's called baseball. Plus he's a power hitter, you can't avoid taking big cuts.
  4. Hembree and Barnes are 1-inn guys and I'm okay with them (Workman I still like too).
  5. Playoffs SP is pretty simple---Sale (if he doesn't have his shoulder fall off), Price and Porcello...but EROD and Wright supply that extra middle relief or even a long relief if a SP gets hammered early, or throws too many pitches. Then you don't have to rely so much on that back-end part of the setup pen. Velasquez is good. Barnes is okay. Kelly? Thornburg? Brasier? Kimbrel I have faith will be fine in his role.
  6. moon, I think both become assets as...relievers...especially Wright.
  7. EROD and Wright come to the rescue....
  8. And yet there is a MLB record for Ks and more Ks than Hits, which never has happened in MLB history for one season. So yes, many are blowing people away as well as using changeups and cutters/curves.
  9. Porcello will throw a perfect game. Game time 1 hour, 38 minutes. Kluber goes perfect also for 5 inn in a historic matchup. Then in the 6th inn, he walks the 9th batter and gives up a 2-run bomb to Mookie. Sox add a few runs in the 8th and 9th, win 5-0.
  10. The only must win for the Sox is game 2 of the postseason if they lose game 1.
  11. I like this matchup if only because the Sox have to win this game, it's the must-win game of the season to this point...(it's such a great year for the Sox that it's almost impossible to make that last statement. It's laughable. Would like to see the Sox win today, and if they don't, really doesn't matter--that's the reality of 2018).
  12. 51-game on-base Fenway Streak...bravo JD, helluva run
  13. DL for everyday guys for various ailments, including pulling a hamstring or twisting an ankle...now that's worthwhile rest. But pitchers arms/shoulders....the guy is throwing 99...hell, expect to be sore. But when Catfish Hunter, Fergie Jenkins, Luis Tiant, Tom Seaver, Nolan Ryan, etc. threw 250 to 300 innings, no one batted an eye. Ask them how sore they were between starts, how many times their arms felt really sore, shoulders aching, etc....it's part of the game. It did not cause injuries. Having the 4 to 5 days between starts was the "rest." Over throwing in MLB is over-rated. Except in one case---which is throwing relievers 5x a week and not expecting effectivenss to decrease. So many teams coddle the starter and yet treat the reliever like they are indestructable. Anyway, it's wrong both ways. Limit relievers more and let SPs go longer, but then that affects also the money structure and salaries for relievers. The need for 4 to 5 guys in a 9-inning game, situational yes, but in the overall...not necessary.
  14. This is a by-product of coddling pitchers arms rather than throwing all the time the way the Braves pitchers did--Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz...You cannot strengthen your throwing arm by extended resting. First you lose your stamina so you aren't able to go 8 innings in a postseason game, and that means effectiveness often by your 80th pitch or more. If he is dealing with soreness, it actually used to be quite normal, so I'm not real pleased with the over-coddling. The fear factors are there, but he needs to be throwing all the time on off days and as Cafardo said maybe be throwing through whatever "tendonitis" he might have. Serious arm injuries are not going to be prevented by intermediate rests. They happen for various reasons. Resting a sore arm is not productive even if the Sox and today's medical staffs are afraid. It's better for him to throw through soreness.
  15. I give both Holt and Devers more credit than a lot of you guys do. Defensively they are not great, but they are good enough. Holt made a play at 2nd that was phenomenal the other day, falling back and somehow getting rid of the ball for the force play. Nunez is better at 3rd than 2nd.
  16. Sox lineup allows for guys based on defense because Betts, Beni, JD, Bogie, and the 2-headed monster of Moreland-Pearce exist. Bradley, Leon, Kinsler--all terrific defenders, if they hit it's gravy...that leaves 3rd base--Devers?? and frankly again you got Holt and Nunez and both are clutch players--guys who have had big hit after big hit in big situations and little ones too. In 13 they had depth guys-and these 2 fit the bill. Sox don't have to worry about offense...period....and don't have to sacrifice defense either.
  17. Devers should be given an ultimatum by Cora--here's your audition once you come back from 10 day DL. You start playing like the Devers we saw last year, really pick up your play, or you sit in the postseason except for pinch hitting or situational things.
  18. The fact is that Nunez or Holt can play third with Kinsler at 2b. Devers can play, not play in the postseason. I'm not going to worry about him because he is young, which sometimes can be a benefit in a postseason game (except for Schiraldi), but he's got so many issues it seems from swinging at balls high in strike zone with 2 strikes to making throws. Sox have lots of options so it's not like you have to play him.
  19. Be nice if you knew how to spell the Sox relievers names, Jung, but whatever go worry. 7-3 Sox
  20. Johnson was terrific, and people were throwing him to the wolves in the 1st
  21. Yup got a bad feeling about Johnson and...4-3 Sox
  22. That bum Johnson better throw shutout innings...oh wait, 4 in a row...darn.
  23. Leave the bum in.
