  1. The Seattle Mariners are headed in that direction, going 8-11 (.421) against the Houston Astros this year after going 3-7 (.300) in 2020 and 1-18 (.053) in 2019. The Red Sox contributed a 2-5 (.286) record against the Astros this year before going 2-4 (.333) in the postseason.
  2. 2022 Seattle Mariners. Or not.
  3. The Red Sox needed a three-game sweep of the Washington Nationals to close with a 29-28 record over their last 57 games (despite a purportedly easier schedule).
  4. Well, Frankie Montas was not as young as Tyler Glasnow (and six other pitchers) were that 2013 season in the South Atlantic League: https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/leader.cgi?type=pitch&id=54256e41 https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=montas001fra
  5. Your post was in response to the post: "The last quality starter developed thru the SOX farm was Buchholz."
  6. Frankie Montas was a 20-year-old who had never pitched above Single A when the Red Sox traded the righthander to the White Sox in July 2013. Montas had an ERA near 5.00 over 164 innings in the Boston farm system and did not become a Top 100 prospect until 2015. Perhaps the White Sox deserve credit for the development of Frankie Montas.
  7. FWIW the Seattle Mariners have lost in the first round only once in their 45-year history (after going 90-72 in 1997): https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/SEA/ Of course the Mariners have advanced to the postseason only four times. The 2001 Seattle club lost in the American League Championship Series after going 116-46 in the regular season.
  8. According to MLB Gameday Hansel Robles struck out Yandy Diaz despite throwing all eight pitches outside the strike zone (with no bad ball/strike calls).
  9. From Wednesday's New York Times: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/10/06/sports/baseball/yankees-red-sox.html?campaign_id=190&emc=edit_ufn_20211006&instance_id=42201&nl=updates-from-the-newsroom&regi_id=96643131&segment_id=70844&te=1&user_id=b794be0b84d54ef474f824bb5ba60eb2
  10. Nathan Eovaldi should get votes.
  11. FWIW Alex Cora did not finish among the top four in the AL Manager of Year voting at CBS Sportsline: https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/2021-mlb-awards-picks-juan-soto-edges-bryce-harper-for-nl-mvp-unanimous-selections-for-al-mvp-cy-young/ Tampa Bay's Kevin Cash finished first and Seattle's Scott Servais second.
  12. The Red Sox played precisely .500 ball after the All Star break until getting a final chance to feast on the NL East. With the sweep of the Washington Nationals the Sox finished 37-34 after the All Star break and 16-4 against the NL East. Good luck in the postseason.
  13. The AL East is guaranteed to have one team in the American League Championship Series ... ... but is guaranteed of having no more than one team in the ALCS.
  14. Compare those numbers to those of the 2021 Seattle Mariners: https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/SEA/2021.shtml 63 players on the active roster, including 38 pitchers, 21 with at least 22 innings Baseball writers may be ready to move on from Alex Cora's suspension stemming from the sign-stealing scandal. Or not. At the All Star break CBS Sportsline writers voted Cora the Manager of the Year (to that date), surmising that the suspension would not hurt Cora in the ultimate voting. Seattle manager Scott Servais finished third in the midseason voting. https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/2021-mlb-midseason-awards-cbs-sports-staff-picks-for-mvp-cy-young-rookie-of-the-year-and-more/ FWIW after the All Star break the Red Sox posted a 37-34 record and the Mariners a 42-29 record.
  15. To throw another name out there: Scott Servais of the Seattle Mariners. With an Opening Day payroll of $81.8 million, the Mariners finished with 90 wins despite preseason projections of 74 wins*. The M's lost 2020 Rookie of the Year Kyle Lewis and 2020 Gold Glove winner Evan White, plus James Paxton and two others from the six-man rotation that opened the season. Seattle finished with a 19-15 record against the AL East but a 9-11 record against the NL West. With 92 wins the Red Sox exceeded their preseason projection of 85 wins. Despite an Opening Day payroll of $182.5 million, the Sox posted a 15-18 record against the AL West but a 16-4 record against the NL East. Congratulations to the Red Sox on a successful season. * https://www.fangraphs.com/standings/playoff-odds?date=2021-03-31&dateDelta=
  16. ^^^^^^^^^^^^
  17. There you go ... 3-0.
  18. FWIW the Seattle Mariners opened the season by taking an interleague series against the winningest team in baseball, the San Francisco Giants.
  19. No one cares but ... The Seattle Mariners lost to injuries three pitchers on the six-man rotation that opened the 2021 season. Injuries sidelined 2020 Rookie of the Year Kyle Lewis and 2020 Gold Glove winner Evan White. The Mariners' current standing is somewhat confusing ... perhaps that's why they call it Chaos Ball.
  20. Like getting demolished when it really counts: https://www.talksox.com/forum/threads/20247-9-28-at-O-s?p=1428587#post1428587 But it's not over.
  21. Is Peter Gammons a reliable unbiased source?
  22. The national media makes amends ... at least for one morning:):
  23. ESPN and other media are big business that make solid business decisions to pander to the largest audiences. This West Coast fan is not offended by the fiscally justified bias.
  24. The total number of miles traveled each season. https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/visuals/map The Mariners should not complain about playing in a division with two teams that are located closer to Boston than to Seattle but to suggest that the Mariners have a homefield advantage overlooks the disadvantages of the extensive travel schedule. Again, no complaints.
