For 20 years the Seattle Mariners have been unable to bunch together enough wins in a single season to advance to the postseason. Over that 20-year span Seattle has a better cumulative regular-season record than nine MLB teams (all of whom have bunched together enough wins in one season to make a postseason appearance). FWIW over the past two seasons the Mariners have a better cumulative regular-season record than the Red Sox. Nevertheless the Red Sox advanced to AL Championship Series this year while the Mariners were left again on the October sidelines. The tough-luck* Mariners have become more and more endearing. If Seattle can bunch together wins in one season, the M's may make another postseason appearance during this poster's lifetime. Or not. BTW the Red Sox should be commended for a fine season. * although Pythagorean suggests the Mariners were lucky in 89- and 90-win seasons in 2018 and 2021

Seattle GM Jerry Dipoto likely shopped Kendall Graveman to many teams and took the best offer in the end. The Red Sox may have been in the mix but could not match other offers. Or not. After the trade Kendall Graveman posted 0.3 fWAR in 23 appearances while fellow short-timer Joe Smith, the veteran reliever who went from Houston to Seattle, posted 0.5 fWAR in 23 appearances. The key for the Mariners was four-plus years of 24-year-old infielder Abraham Toro, who posted 0.8 fWAR in 60 games with the M's. The same week Seattle acquired three-plus years of part-time Tampa Bay closer Diego Castillo, whom the Rays were unlikely the trade to a division rival.

Baseball Trade Values is likely to downgrade Jarred Duran after the now 25-year-old posted a negative 0.5 fWAR in only 33 games. The ZiPS three-year projections have Duran at 0.4, 0.6 and 0.5 fWAR in 540+ plate appearances in each of the next three seasons. https://www.fangraphs.com/players/jarren-duran/24617/stats?position=OF#zips-3-year-projections Duran is unlikely to land Frankie Montas or Sean Manaea.

The Seattle Mariners are headed in that direction, going 8-11 (.421) against the Houston Astros this year after going 3-7 (.300) in 2020 and 1-18 (.053) in 2019. The Red Sox contributed a 2-5 (.286) record against the Astros this year before going 2-4 (.333) in the postseason.

Frankie Montas was a 20-year-old who had never pitched above Single A when the Red Sox traded the righthander to the White Sox in July 2013. Montas had an ERA near 5.00 over 164 innings in the Boston farm system and did not become a Top 100 prospect until 2015. Perhaps the White Sox deserve credit for the development of Frankie Montas.

FWIW the Seattle Mariners have lost in the first round only once in their 45-year history (after going 90-72 in 1997): https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/SEA/ Of course the Mariners have advanced to the postseason only four times. The 2001 Seattle club lost in the American League Championship Series after going 116-46 in the regular season. -
