  1. One team is unlikely to invest that much money (and that many years) in the riskiest segment of the market.
  2. That trade might be somewhat surprising against the backdrop that has the Brewers ranked third and the Red Sox 16th in MLB.com’s midseason farm system rankings: MLB Pipeline's 2023 midseason farm system re-ranks WWW.MLB.COM Ranking farm systems -- comparing groups of a couple hundred prospects in 30 different organizations -- is, at best, a mostly subjective exercise, and at worst, all but impossible to do well. Yet the teams that place near the top in MLB Pipeline's biannual rankings almost always parlay their prospects
  3. The chances are nearly nil that one team will sign both Blake Snell and Yoshinobu Yamamoto.
  4. Baseball Trade Values accepts a trade of Marcelo Mayer and Ceddanne Rafaela for three cheap years (one guaranteed and two team options) of 27-year-old righthander Freddy Peralta. Does that fit the bill?
  5. A Milwaukee club on pace to win 90 games and a division title this year is unlikely to punt on 2024 by trading Corbin Burnes and Brandon Woodruff. The Brewers are not a last-place team with dire prospects for next season.
  6. Most teams will be looking for starting pitchers this upcoming offseason. The Red Sox will score a coup if they land “two really good SP’er” near the top of this list: https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders/major-league?pos=all&stats=pit&lg=all&qual=y&type=8&month=0&ind=0&startdate=&enddate=&season1=2021&season=2023
  7. Jordan Lawlar, a high school shortstop taken two slots after Marcelo Mayer in the 2021 draft, is expected to make his MLB debut Thursday for the Arizona Diamondbacks: https://www.milb.com/news/arizona-diamondbacks-calling-up-jordan-lawlar
  8. On Tuesday the Mariners will face righthander Connor Phillips, their 2020 second-round draft pick out of a community college. Phillips will make his MLB debut with the Cincinnati Reds, who acquired Phillips and others in the March 2022 trade of Eugenio Suarez and Jesse Winker. This year the Reds have also gotten 19 starts (and an ERA+ of 110) from lefthander Brandon Williamson, the Mariners' 2019 second-round draft pick out of Texas Christian University, who was also included in the Suarez/Winker trade.
  9. Righthander Bryan Woo is a bit of a unicorn. Woo had an ERA of 6.36 over only 69.1 innings in college before the Seattle Mariners took him in the sixth round of the 2021 draft. Woo had posted an ERA of 6.11 over 28 innings in his final season at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, before undergoing Tommy John surgery. Woo made his professional debut just 15 months ago and pitched only 101 minor league innings before his call up to the Mariners. Seattle broadcaster Aaron Goldsmith said someone in the Mariner braintrust thought Woo should be the top pick of the 2021 draft. That's evidence that MLB front offices have far more information than we fans do. BTW the development of Logan Gilbert and George Kirby was slowed by the cancellation of the 2020 minor league season.
  10. Thanks. Logan Gilbert was the 14th pick of the 2018 draft. Corrections are difficult on a phone.
  11. At MLB Pipeline Emerson Hancock is the only pitcher ranked among Seattle’s Top 10 prospects. Three of the top four prospects (and five of 10) are position players drafted out of high school.
  12. Logan Gilbert was taken with the 14th pick of the 2020 draft but an attempt to edit the mistake resulted in the deletion of the post.
  13. The $72 million left on Masataka Yoshida’s contract nearly matches up with the $73 million remaining on the contract of the 2021 AL Cy Young Award winner. Each team has needs.😁😁😁
  14. Masataka Yoshida, who turned 30 years old on July 15, has posted 0.7 fWAR in 117 games this year and is projected to post another 0.4 fWAR in 23 games before the season's end. https://www.fangraphs.com/players/masataka-yoshida/31837/stats?position=DH/OF Before this season ZiPS projected Yoshida with WAR of 3.7 in 2023, 3.2 in 2024 and 2.6 in 2025. https://www.fangraphs.com/players/masataka-yoshida/31837/stats?position=DH/OF#zips-3-year-projections Yoshida has four years and $72 million remaining on his contract.
  15. That's precisely why Masataka Yoshida would bring back far less in a trade. The potential trade partner would rather spend that money elsewhere.
  16. Corey Kluber with his $10 million salary has been disappointing but Seattle’s $180.5 million payroll includes $21 million for 2021 Cy Young winner Robbie Ray and another $6.75 million for fellow lefthander Marco Gonzales. Ray and Gonzales are out for the season after combining for fewer innings (3.1 and 50) than Kluber (55) this season.
  17. FWIW the Red Sox are 19-24 against National League teams, 19-14 against AL East teams, 12-12 against AL West teams and 32-33 against teams with a record above .500: 2024 MLB Standings and Records: Wild Card | MLB.com WWW.MLB.COM The official standings for Major League Baseball including division and league standings for regular season, wild card, and playoffs.
  18. The Seattle Mariners would have passed the Houston Astros in the standings if the Red Sox had won on Monday. Go get 'em on Tuesday.
  19. Near the trade deadline the Seattle Mariners received infielder Josh Rojas, outfielder Dominic Canzone and infield prospect Ryan Bliss for a year and two months of 33-year-old closer Paul Sewald, who had posted 1.0 fWAR in 45 games covering 43 innings this year up to the day of the trade. So far this season 37-year-old reliever Chris Martin has posted 1.0 fWAR in 44 appearances covering 41 inning as the righthander approaches free agency in October.
  20. Seattle has a relatively soft 18 games remaining in August (7 KC, 3 OAK, 3 CWS, 3 HOU, 2 BAL) but a brutal 29-game September schedule that culminates with 10 games against Texas (7) and Houston (3). The Mariners could control their destiny. Or not.
  21. Thank you for the invitation! Jarren Duran indeed has been among the biggest surprises this season while Taylor Trammell's broken wrist in February put a damper on his season. Duran has broken out this year after posting a wRC+ of 120 in 307 plate appearances last year in Triple A. Trammell, who is a full year younger than Duran, has posted a wRC+ of 130 in 248 plate appearances this year after a late start at Triple A. https://www.fangraphs.com/players/jarren-duran/24617/stats?position=OF https://www.fangraphs.com/players/taylor-trammell/19960/stats?position=OF The chances of a Duran-type turnaround are slim but the Mariners have not given up on Trammell.
  22. It's a long season and the better teams often rise toward the top. Or not.
  23. FanGraphs projects rest-of-season wRC+ of 99 and WAR of 0.5 for Jarren Duran, who in 25 games since the All Star break has posted a .241/.308/.422/.729 line. In August Duran has posted a .177/.222/.412/.634 line in 10 games.
  24. Jarren Duran may be this year’s biggest surprise but his 2.6 fWAR trails the 3.9 fWAR posted by Julio Rodriguez.
  25. BTV has offered volatile valuations for nearly 27-year-old Jarren Duran, who had posted a negative 0.4 fWAR in each of his two previous seasons. The Mariners would probably prefer to take their chances with outfielders Cade Marlowe, Dominic Canzone and Taylor Trammell (to complement Julio Rodriguez and Jarred Kelenic going forward).
