In the unlikely event Luis Castillo is traded, Seattle would want an immediate impact bat with multiple years of team control. Kyle Teel's highest value comes at catcher where the Mariners have four more years of 27-year-old Cal Raleigh, who this year ranked third among all catchers with 4.7 fWAR (and third over the past two seasons at 8.8 fWAR).

The Mariners might consider trading Luis Castillo to free up payroll to sign free agent lefthander Blake Snell, the Seattle native who reportedly wants to return home. Castillo has a no-trade clause.

Traffic and parking are challenging but the immediate neighborhood of Oracle Park is not San Francisco's worst. I enjoy walking the 1.3 miles to the ballpark from the Ferry Building to the north. In May the Giants have a nine-game homestand -- including three games against Shohei Ohtani and the Dodgers -- when I'll be in the Bay Area for my two daughters' commencements a week apart.

Seattle fans are leveling similar criticisms at Mariner owners. For years the message was that the Mariners would spend for the finishing pieces after developing the cost-efficient young core of Julio Rodriguez, George Kirby, Cal Raleigh, Logan Gilbert, J.P. Crawford, Ty France, Bryce Miller, Bryan Woo, Matt Brash and Andres Munoz. Instead, coming off Mariner seasons of 90, 90 and 88 wins, the owners reportedly are looking to limit payroll. The Red Sox are not the only team with a frustrated fanbase. -
