  1. Last year 12 weeks of reliever Brad Zielger cost the Red Sox righthander Jose Almonte and second baseman Luis Alejandro Basabe, whom SoxProspects had ranked 18th in a Boston farm system that included Yoan Moncada, Andrew Benintendi, Anderson Espinoza, Rafael Devers, Michael Kopech, Sam Travis, Brian Johnson and Michael Chavis. Seattle will get a year and about 11 weeks of 30-year-old righthander David Phelps, who has posted 0.3 fWAR in 44 appearances for Miami this year after posting 1.9 fWAR last year. At the time of the Red Sox trade, Ziegler has posted 0.5 fWAR in 36 appearances for Arizona after posting 0.6 fWAR the previous year. This year the 37-year-old Ziegler has posted 0.0 fWAR in 34 appearances as Phelps' teammate on the Marlins.
  2. I accept that we subject ourselves to feedback when we post to a public forum. Thank you for your response.
  3. Thank you for the feedback.
  4. MLB Prospect Watch ranked the minor leaguers No. 6, No. 16 and No. 22 (and unranked) if the middle-of-the-road Seattle farm system. Brayan Hernandez, the top-ranked prospect, is an outfielder, the same position as the Mariners' top prospects (Kyle Lewis and Tyler O'Neill) and three Seattle rookies (Ben Gamel, Mitch Haniger and Guillermo Heredia) who until recently had posted higher 2017 fWAR than Andrew Benintendi in fewer games (despite sharing outfield duties with Jarrod Dyson and his 2.0 fWAR). Seattle general manager Jerry Dipoto has been quoted as saying he won't trade for rentals so David Phelps was a target with his team control through 2018.
  5. I associate the f-word with 12-year-olds. Many folks outgrow that stage.
  6. No complaint. I simply asked a question. I suppose you're communicating to the best of your abilities. Warm regards.
  7. Why can't you ask the question without dropping the f-bomb?
  8. The Red Sox/Yankee series provided the intro to this piece about pitch selection: https://sports.yahoo.com/slow-down-yankees-leading-change-114640425.html
  9. BTW, David Phelps was a Golden Domer.
  10. Reliever David Phelps, in whom the Red Sox reportedly had interest, has been traded from Miami to Seattle for four minor leaguers. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/07/marlins-trade-david-phelps-mariners.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/07/red-sox-interested-in-martin-prado-david-phelps-package.html
  11. I thought you had written somewhat fondly of Danny Valencia in the past. As I write the Mariners are 1.5 games back in the race for the second Wild Card slot with a 10-game homestand against the Yankees, Red Sox and Mets coming up. The August schedule, however, is brutal with 20 road games and only seven home games.
  12. With four Defensive Runs Saved, Danny Valencia is tied with Mitch Moreland and Matt Carpenter for sixth place among qualified first basemen this year: http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=1b&stats=fld&lg=all&qual=y&type=1&season=2017&month=0&season1=2017&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&sort=10,d However, at a -0.1 Valencia has the only negative UZR/150 among the top eight first basemen in DRS.
  13. The Seattle Mariners, who are almost "near out of it," have first baseman Danny Valencia, who has posted a wRC+ of 109 in his final year of team control. The 32-year-old Valencia has a .298/.353/.475/.829 line in 266 plate appearances since April.
  14. For what it's worth, ZiPS, Steamer and FanGraphs Depth Charts project Wilmer Flores with rest-of-season WAR of 0.1 in 57 games, 0.8 in 64 games and 0.7 in 67 games: http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=5827&position=3B/SS Flores has a UZR/150 of a negative 6.2 in 893 career innings at third base, including a negative 9.4 in 299 innings this year. The nearly 26-year-old Flores remains under team control for two more seasons working off his 2017 arbitration salary of $2.2 million.
  15. oldtimer has my support.
  16. Nelson Cruz remains under team control through the 2018 season.
  17. Citing batting average instead of on-base percentage evokes the 1950s.
  18. What prospect could the Red Sox land for Hanley Ramirez, who has posted 0.1 fWAR this year on his annual salary of $22 million? The Sox would likely need to add a prospect to offset the negative value of Ramirez.
  19. Michael Chavis does not have a long enough track record for the Athletics to trade Yonder Alonso for him.
  20. This year Rusney Castillo will be paid upwards of twice as much ($11.27 million) as Oakland's top-paid player (Jed Lowrie, $6.5 million). Perhaps if the Red Sox package the 30-year-old Castillo with Rafael Devers.
  21. Let's not forget 1997: https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/slocuhe01.shtml#all_transactions_other
  22. ZiPS, Steamer and FanGraphs Depth Charts project rest-of-season WAR of 1.0, 1.2 and 1.2 for Todd Frazier and 0.7, 0.8 and 0.8 for Yangervis Solarte: http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=785&position=3B http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=5352&position=2B/3B Because he comes with two more years of team control, Solarte is likely to cost more in trade (for less immediate contribution).
  23. The win was unlikely because the Red Sox trailed going into the bottom of the ninth inning against an elite closer with an ERA of 2.17 in 408 career appearances.
  24. The flip side is that Drew Pomeranz surrendered four runs in six innings on Friday evening but the Red Sox managed to grab an unlikely win.
  25. The Red Sox could bounce back with 10 runs in the nightcap. Baseball has a certain random nature.
