  2. The Phillies reportedly have spoken with Red Sox about Brandon Workman: Would anyone trade Workman for 22-year-old lefthander Erik Miller, the Phillies' 11th-ranked prospect? https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=miller007eri Phillies Top Prospects | MLB.com WWW.MLB.COM The Official Site of Major League Baseball Miller and my older daughter shared a birthday at Stanford (although he's two years younger).

  4. Oakland shortstop Marcus Semiem, who last year ranked fifth among all players with 7.6 fWAR, is a free agent after this season: https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=y&type=8&season=2019&month=0&season1=2019&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&startdate=&enddate=

  6. Young righthander Brusdar Graterol, who reportedly failed his Red Sox physical, has made 10 appearances with the Dodgers so far this season but apparently is not projected as a starter: https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/gl.fcgi?id=gratebr01&t=p&year=2020
  7. The rebuilding Seattle Mariners traded for three members of their current starting rotation -- Marco Gonzales, Justus Sheffield and Justin Dunn -- all of whom remain under team control through 2025. In July 2017 Seattle acquired lefthander Marco Gonzales from St. Louis in exchange for outfielder Tyler O'Neil, who then was a Top 40 prospect. Since the start of 2018 season Gonzales ranks 22nd among all pitchers in fWAR. Coming off an 89-win season in 2018, the Mariners traded lefthander James Paxton to the Yankees for lefthander Justus Sheffield, righthander Erik Swanson and outfielder Dom Thompson-Williams. Sheffield has been inconsistent in the rotation but on Sunday pitched six shutout innings, giving up four hits while striking out seven and walking none. In the same offseason Seattle traded closer Edwin Diaz, secondbaseman Robinson Cano and cash to the Mets for outfielder Jarred Kelenic, pitchers Justin Dunn and Gerson Bautista and spare parts. Dunn has struggled in the rotation but posted a quality start last night while Kelenic is a Top 12 prospect in baseball. Meanwhile the Mariners drafted highly regarded college pitchers in the first rounds of the drafts in 2018, 2019 and 2020. Logan Gilbert, George Kirby and Emerson Hancock have all cracked at least one Top 100 prospect list. The rebuild can be painful as evidenced by Seattle's 94 losses last year. But patience could pay off. Or not.
  8. Bobby Dalbec is a year younger than Will Middlebrooks was when the Red Sox traded the third baseman to San Diego for catcher Ryan Hanigan. Middlebrooks, who had posted a .237/.284/.411/.695 line in 232 games with the Red Sox, came with three years of team control while Dalbec has six years of team control. Do Dalbec and Middlebrooks have similar hitting profiles?
  9. Joey Gallo, who is less than 20 months older than Bobby Dalbec, is in his sixth MLB season after being a Top 10 prospect.

  12. Middle infielder Jeter Downs at No. 49 and first baseman Triston Casas at No. 85 are the lone Red Sox representatives* on MLB Pipeline's Top 100 prospect list: Top 100 Baseball Prospects | MLB.com WWW.MLB.COM The Official Site of Major League Baseball The Sox will be hard-pressed to improve the farm through inseason trades. Or not. * credit to notin for the correction
  13. FiveThirtyEight still gives the Red Sox a 32 percent chance of advancing to the postseason: https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/2020-mlb-predictions/
  14. With a more loaded club last year, the Red Sox also opened the season 3-8 (and then 3-9). Fans should have reasonable expectations.
  15. A team cannot depend on more than half of highly ranked prospects to produce in the long run. That's why it's better to have 10 highly ranked propects than only two. With low expectations this year, the Mariners have the luxury of auditioning a six-man rotation of pitchers under age 30, four of whom with multiple years of team control beyond 2020. Pitching prospects Logan Gilbert, George Kirby and Emerson Hancock may have the highest ceilings. A trio of 25-year-old hitters -- Kyle Lewis, J.P. Crawford and Shed Long -- are off to solid starts while Baseball Prospectus ranks outfielders Jarred Kelenic and Julio Rodriguez among the Top 10 prospects in baseball. Seattle baseball fans are no strangers to disappointment but maintain a glimmer of optimism.
  16. Seattle's "reimagining" rebuild after an 89-win season in 2018 was about long-term prospects, not about "saving money." The strategy may fall flat for the cursed franchise but some early returns are encouraging.
  17. To be precise, Austin Brice pitched one scoreless inning, walking two while throwing 29 pitches. MLB Gameday: Red Sox 7, Yankees 9 Final Score (08/02/2020) | MLB.com WWW.MLB.COM Follow MLB results with FREE box scores, pitch-by-pitch strikezone info, and Statcast data for Red Sox vs. Yankees at Yankee Stadium Brice most likely was a planned opener. How has a year of the opener changed baseball? WWW.MLB.COM One year ago today, those ever-innovative Tampa Bay Rays changed the game again by reintroducing the concept of "the opener" to baseball. On May 19, they gave Sergio Romo his first career start, after his first 588 games came in relief. Romo struck out Zack Cozart, Mike Trout, and Justin

  20. Strange times. My Mariners are 1-3 despite staking leads in each game against the defending American League champion Astros. Adult children have moved home where my wife and I have been working since March. Be well.
  21. Last year Mitch Moreland posted a .204/.283/.315/.598 line against lefthanders. The Mets send lefty Dave Peterson to the mound against the Red Sox tonight.
