  1. The Boston press was always loaded with writers with vendettas against stars, usually for trivial reasons. The Herald’s Steve Buckley seemed to hate Roger Clemens and once wrote an article about Roger’s temper because he threw a bag of hot dog rolls at him. Hot dog rolls! Meanwhile on other teams, Albert Belle was throwing baseballs at photographers who were looking in another direction…
  2. And neither lasted very long. They did win a WS with Lugo, and won 95 games with Renteria, but both struggled defensively. I think Alex Gonzalez was his best SS free agent and the Sox were a bit quick to replace him…
  3. A lot of people liked to point to that, but to me his movement at shortstop was probably a good thing. A bad thing would have been sticking with a veteran who was clearly uncomfortable with the team/position/contract/whatever. Recognizing that something wasn’t working and moving on is a good thing…
  4. It should also be obvious that the Sox went 33-14 over a 47 game stretch - which did clearly not take place over 2 weeks against a couple bad teams - during which they lost 3 starting pitchers (Eovaldi, Whitlock and Hill) and would 2 more (Wacha and Sale) shortly after. If you think “everyone has injuries”, please name another team that lost five SPs over a 4 week stretch…
  5. Work trip to Connecticut. So, yes. Bored…
  6. I only speak in possibilities as I don’t have access to actual players. Winckowski has a 5.83 ERA in 61 IP at age 24. Did you also give up on Nestor Cortes at his 5.83 ERA after 66 IP at that same age? Or os the hard line between “potential” and “flop” somewhere between an ERA of 5.67 and 5.83?
  7. He is disappointing lately, but at 103 IP, he also might be wearing down physically. His career high in IP is only 127 and that was back in 2019…
  8. You make it sound like you think getting Price was a positive part of the deal for LA, and not just a salary dump by Boston. Two teams made offers for Betts. Two. Dodgers and Padres. And I think only the Dodgers we’re willing to take Price money to get Betts…
  9. So you didn’t think the clubhouse looked like that during your visit?
  10. Wasn’t me. I never saw the point in DFAing or trading (which many others also wanted) Arroyo. Now Josh Taylor was my DFA target last year. Until he just turned it on and became a bullpen stud. This year - I’ve been all for DFAing Barnes, Brasier and Diekman…
  11. It’s not fantasy re-draft. A new GM doesn’t walk into a clean slate and just build. DD entered a very favorable situation in which the team had a good farm loaded with prospects other teams wanted, a glut of talented pre-arb players, and an unlimited budget. He did what he was supposed to do. He built a great team. But he also left an aftermath of big, ugly deals and younger players getting more expensive. Someone had to clean up that mess and get a new team going forward. You keep saying “it’s been 3 years” like there was a single contract in that time that was that short. The Sox are still paying off 2018 and 2019…
  12. He traded away two players from the MLB roster, one of whom every fan was glad to see go. He even told Bogaerts he wouldn’t be traded. Had he gutted the team, that sends a white flag message. Would that have been better?
  13. It’s every GMs job. Fans like the “quick fix heavy spend types” because of the immediate results, but when all the bills come due and the players age, suddenly they conveniently forget 7 year contracts last for 7 years, and they want more quick fix heavy spending…
  14. The players all admitted it was their job to avoid the firesale…
  15. The GMs job is to worry about those other years as well. Just because you don’t like it doesn’t change that…
  16. Boras wouldn’t have countered any offer unless it was the number Bogaerts wanted. That’s how he operates. Also - other ways Bloom alienated the clubhouse?
  17. Maybe not in 2022. Do you think it never will?
  18. A big chunk of that money ($104 mill) is tied up on Sale, Price, Eovaldi, Bogaerts and Martinez, none of whom Bloom signed…
  19. Ok, I’ll bite. What other things did Bloom do to alienate the clubhouse? And we don’t know what Bogaerts asked for because there was no counter offer, something you defended because you perceived X to be insulted, but in reality is a years-long Scott Boras negotiation tactic…
  20. The defensive upgrades meant nothing? Bradley was an upgrade over Renfroe. Story was an upgrade over Arroyo/Chavis/Iglesias. Story’s RBI pace (58 in 81 games) was an upgrade over Renfroe’s numbers…
  21. Arroyo in RF wasn’t nearly the disaster that Duran in CF was. I get why Duran isn’t vaxxed; he’d just misplay the virus and watch it get behind him. Now I get it’s more complicated and intricate in MLB, but I have had to coach girls softball and keep it simple. The simplest way to describe the job of an outfielder is - keep one runner from advancing one base. (Granted at the ages I was coaching, you assume any and all flyballs will not be caught.). I told them I don’t care which runner - but stop one of them. Not the best metric but using it, I’ve seen good outfielders actually fail. You know the type, strong throwing arms and well aware so they try to dupe runners into taking another base. (No, Brad Hawpe. Not you. Really.) I don’t think that experiment was so horrible given that Arroyo is talented and the weak side of the platoon. But I would have been fine with JBJ everyday batting ninth and making outs on both sides of the ball…
  22. Schreiber was claimed off waivers after being DFAd by the Tigers…
  23. On Arroyo to RF, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if that was Cora’s plan all along. As in: Bloom: Do you want a right-handed hitting outfielder to platoon with Bradley? Cora: No. I want to find ways to get Christian more involved. Boom. That was the whole discussion. Not sure why some people think Bloom 1) announced in the press he needed to acquire a right -handed bat to platoon with Bradley and then 2) didn’t acquire one, and instead forced Cora to play Arroyo. But the latter is the plan I see people think happened. But if it actually did go down that way, I don’t fault Cora at all. Arroyo is a good player the team has always needed him to be more involved, and if not for his questionable durability, Arroyo is easily a starter full time. Not sure why people think this one is such a big deal…
  24. Since starting out 50-17 (.746), Yankees are 24-31 (.436). The biggest lead over second place this year was 15.5 games. Sox fans will tell you just one game less isn’t safe…
  25. I was thinking more like Mitch White…
