  1. If you use fWARVas a measure, Story has actually been pretty close to Bogaerts over the past few seasons. Eovaldi is just too risky to go long term with again. He’s good when healthy, but I have strong doubts he will stay healthy from ages 33-37 or 38. I think JD and Bogaerts will return. Devers is going to be a difficult case to bring back (when the time comes), so I’m not as confident. Will keeping Bogaerts once again look like the Consolation Prize for losing Devers just like he was for losing Betts?
  2. Why no confidence? Besides stealing Whitlock, he’s also added Nick Pivetta, whom he got for two mediocre relief pitchers on expiring contracts and got him from a large market team that had given up on him and was not just dumping salary…
  3. Not my favorite source either. But I don’t like just disregarding them if they do put in the effort…
  4. He had his detractors, but most of them focused on individual moves and ignored the big picture. The guy built a championship team and won multiple rings while simultaneously rebuilding the farm system. Yet somehow some fans seem to think “but he kept getting new shortstops” is a criticism that actually offsets those other accomplishments. To me, I wonder if these same people read the Bible, and when they get the the miracle of the loaves and fishes, their first reaction is “What?! No tartar sauce!?? Some savior!!”
  5. I can add him to the list. But Cabrera, Gonzalez, and Scutaro we’re all good. And he also signed Bogaerts and Jose Iglesias. The worst thing you can say is he clearly learned from his mistakes, and he turned Renteria into Coco Crisp and even Lugo was only around for 2+ years, one of which was a championship team and the second got the Sox to the ALCS…
  6. I believe Jim Hendry actually did that, in a rare Jim Hendry move that worked…
  7. An overblown criticism. He signed one SS (Renteria) who didn’t work out and floated through a few names while his prospects developed. But he also brought in two extremely talented shortstops that are both still playing MLB, which is pretty impressive for a guy whose been gone for 10 years…
  8. He’s already stolen Whitlock from the Yankees…
  9. If Bloom is only a puppet, why do you think he’s a bad fit for Boston? There isn’t a GM/President of Ops out there who doesn’t listen to his owner…
  10. Nothing would affect attendance and ratings more than winning. If those are both down and the team still has Bogaerts and Devers, doesn’t that tell you stars are less important than winning? No one is turning off the Sox solely because of Bogaerts’ stalled contract talks…
  11. Betts was drafted under Epstein. Epstein also signed Bogaerts as IFA. Cherington signed Devers as IFA…
  12. I’m sure they’re all told to spend as little as possible, but many including presumably Bloom have that caveat “as long as we build a winner.” Or something to that effect…
  13. Devers isn’t Harper or Machado, but I’d be surprised if he got less than $300 mill…
  14. Well if the GM doesn’t stay within his financial limits, there are going to be issues at some point. I think I agree with Merloni (who, unlike me, probably knows Bogaerts) that the Sox and Xander will eventually work something out. But right now, does anyone even know what Bogaerts wants? Are you saying if wants? If X wants 10 years $250 mill, should Bloom just get it done?
  15. Actually I think Bloom is a pretty good choice for a GM whose job is to not capitulate to fan impatience and media whining…
  16. Yeah not like your posts at all. This post is so laden with sarcasm any and all color cues would be insultingly redundant…
  17. I’ve probably been one of the least critical of Bloom, but even I’ve repeatedly called him out for backfilling the rotation from the bullpen and then not backfilling the bullpen. And the whole Houck usage thing, although for this I also (possibly mistakenly) blame Cora. I’ve criticized Bloom far, far more than dgalehouse has criticized Dombrowski….
  18. The problem with years like 2019 is they can have lingering effects. Like they’ve been having in 2020 and 2021 and 2022…
  19. C and 2b and maybe DH. Most other spots might be filled already. And don’t sleep on Jeter Downs at 2b just yet…
  20. Dude, you literally out of the blue start chanting the praises for Dombrowski and defend him from any and all criticisms while simultaneously making sure no other Sox GM gets any praise. Heck you even lower the standards you hold other GMs to just to make sure they align with Dombrowski’s accomplishments…
  21. So then what you’re saying is the Sox need is a GM who can ignore all that noise and build an organization using his baseball acumen. Sounds like a good idea to me…
  22. Maybe your creative accounting skills exceed those of the current front office….
  23. Because baseball is played so differently in Boston?
  24. It’s ironic the same people criticizing folks for never blaming Bloom are the same ones who never let anyone criticize Dombrowski and rushed to his aid on their white horses. And also probably fail to acknowledge DD’s hand in the Sox current situation…
  25. Hanley was on the $240mill+ 2018 payroll, but not the $240mill+ 2019 payroll. But I was counting Sandoval, as he was on both. And while not part of the payroll, Rusney Castillo was still an expense…
