Last winter, Bloom tried to acquire Jacob Stallings, the MLB season leader in Defensive Rubs Saved. I wondered if this was part of his evaluation of catchers. It turns out McGuire is also very good at DRS, especially relative to his innings played. So I was far from surprised he was targeted as a catcher. Will he start next season? Best I can say is “Maybe?”

The analytics actually do dictate spending on the bullpen, or at least having good relievers ready to handle more impactful situations in game, typically denoted by the WPa. They do not emphasize spending big on a closer, as very often the most critical moments are not in the 9th inning. The Sox had 4 SP on the IL at once, and that’s without counting Paxton. And it’s the medical staff’s fault? Can you really blame them for injuries to oft-injured Eovaldi? Or 42yo Rich Hill? Or even Wacha?

OBP is why I’m high on Nimmo as an off-season target. But reportedly the Mets want to keep him and he’s expected to receive a QO, so he’s not much more likely to be the Sox leadoff hitter than I am…

Agreed. The Sox have lost their focus on OBP. But having people on base does help them score. Bogaerts is one of the best in MLB at getting on base…

There are 29 other teams out there, and yes, at least one will put out younger players. I’ve never heard of any 5 year minimum rule, but I could certainly see a player taking that long. Harris and Grissom were both drafted in 2019. No one from the Sox 2019 draft class has made MLB and with the possible e exception of Noah Song none of them ever may make it. But Duran (drafted in 2018) that much different of a story?

No. MLB is populated solely by the best 776 baseball players in the world. Most of these players have never lost anywhere and don’t expect to start now. Do you really think the Orioles players never believed in themselves? Odd semi-related story - I was watching BBTN a couple weeks back and the discussion was about how players react to being traded. One of the guests was Cameron Maybin, who talked about how shocked he was the Tigers traded him. Did they lose faith? “I’m a first round pick!” He was angry. He was upset. He could’ve understand it. Then he was told it was for Miguel Cabrera. His reaction? “Oh. That makes sense.” And he was a recent draft pick at the time!! So I think, like Cameron, the Orioles’ players have always just believed in themselves…
