  1. It’s a bit difficult to think of many deals where two months of a player brought back a great return. Nelson Cruz did last season, but most of the bigger names still had over a full season left. Maybe Kimbrel for Madrigal? The A’s did ok dealing Sonny Gray at the deadline. The Orioles got squat for Machado. But who since Bartolo Colon has really brought back a farm-altering return? I’m giving the 2020/2021 teams a pass, since a lot of that is still TBD…
  2. Says the man who sings the praises of the GM that left Whitlock unprotected…
  3. No. That was a fertility drug. Great hitter. Not a very bright man…
  4. Maybe they just need help from the Yankee trainer, some guy named Stan Islozol…
  5. Rental players don’t always bring back the best haul…
  6. I agree. And I think some internal tweaks can make a significant difference in the bullpen…
  7. But they’re also defending champs. That’s gotta count for something
  8. Or get Jeff Bezos into MLB…
  9. The Sox low point this year was 10-19. Since then we’re 15-8…
  10. It does help that Steve Cohen might be worth more than the other 29 owners combined. I don’t think you should expect that from Henry…
  11. Filling 12+ slots guarantees a mess…
  12. I’ll allow the erasure if Story, since it wouldn’t likely have happened had the Sox signed Betts. But Sale’s contract has to count…
  13. Not likely unless his OPS in September drops under .600…
  14. Any potential major leaguer taking a roster spot for minimum wage makes it that much easier to pay for Bogaerts and/or Devers. Fifth starter? 7th bullpen arm? If it’s a minimum wage player, that helps. And with minor leaguers, it’s not uncommon for a 20yo future swingman to become a 21yo potential second or third starter…
  15. His leverage was hurt because with Story, the Sox simply don’t need him as badly…
  16. If he doesn’t get what he wants from Boston now, he can /will go and see what his best offer is from anyone in November. What would be his incentive to sign anything with Boston right now? Unless it met his asking price, whatever that is…
  17. I don’t think it sealed his fate as much as I think it hurt his leverage. Before Story was on board, Bogaerts could basically demand the world, and if the Sox didn’t meet his terms, he had free agency to fall back on. Free agency might never reach his contact demands, but at least he knows he will get the best possible offer. It’s like when JD was set to become a free agent, and Boras wrote a treatise about the “King Kong of Slug” and how JD deserved $200mill. Arizona had first rights, and walked away at that price despite JD reaching legend status in a partial season there. JD went to the market and got nowhere near his $200 mill. Boston came the closest, and even then it took forever for JD to sign, presumably because Boras was trying to squeeze that missing $75mill out of anyone he could…
  18. The quote was originally from UCLA football coach Red Sanders. Sanders also is credited with saying of rival USC “Beating SC isn’t a matter of life and death. It’s more important than that.” It is possible the man was a tad overly competitive…
  19. If they wanted to see if last season’s final 9 IP from Barnes were just a fluke or if he recovered from whatever, I get that. But obviously Barnes ha gone well out of his way to prove those innings were no fluke…
  20. Certainly not my input…
  21. Follow your own response about re-signing Sale, something you said you would not have done in response to my saying your accounting might be more creative than the current front office…
  22. I’m fine with that. The interesting fallout from that is Story as a big moves also serves as negotiation leverage to prevent Bogaerts from becoming an even bigger move…
  23. Would the current front office have done it either?
  24. Has he even been allowed to make big moves? The Sox payroll still isn’t small…
  25. Was Yawkey trying to collect DiMaggio’s? “I’ve got Dom. Once I get Joe, getting Vince will be real easy! And then I’ll have them alll and will RULE THE WORLD!” Yeah I sometimes think of Yawkey as a Bond villain. But I doubt I’m the only one…
