So would you extend Devers for $300mill?
Bear in mind there is no wrong answer. Not like Bloom and Henry scan these boards looking for ideas or support for their plans.
I like to think Bloom is debating about Bogaerts saying out loud. “ Should I just trade X? Or extend him? For what? $125mill? $150mill? $200mill? I need notin’s take.”
But I doubt that happens. Not with that level of specificity anyway…
Even citing he lost the Mookie trade is a bad example. Verdugo is no Mookie, but not extending Mookie does keep Devers in play for now. I’m sure some people would rather have Mookie over Devers and Verdugo, but I wouldn’t call it a slam dunk obvious choice…
If the hosts of a local sports radio show are calling out the Sox for not extending Devers and Bogaerts while also saying they could easily acquire and extend Soto, I think calling them out for their fantasy world isn’t necessarily the wrong side.
I do think the Sox could have all three, but the supporting cast would be, to be kind, deeply flawed. The pitching, for example, would be pretty weak. Especially if the Nats insisted on Whitlock as part of the package for Soto. Which is extremely likely given his ability and contract…
Yeah NE sports radio and journalism in general is atrocious. Too many of them adopt the attitude that complaining is a sign of intelligence, and therefore they dump all over every move and non-move the Sox make. Like Tony Massarotti, say.
Also I’m roughly 110% positive Gerry Callahan is one of those high school jocks who thought he could have gone pro, but he “banged up his knee right before senior year” and then never got that scholarship blah blah blah. So now he writes everything not only from a point of jealousy, but sometimes, FROM VENGEANCE!!!
Scott Boras can’t turn down the offer without Soto’s permission. Boras works for Soto, not the other way around.
If the East Coast was all that important, Soto could simply sign with Washington regardless of what Boras says…
Undoubtedly all of us Baseball Junkies have already seen this, but it’s official.
Xander is staying this season.

Coming from someone who has advocated for Puig more than once, HE HAS BEEN OUT OF MLB FOR THREE YEARS!!
Curtis Granderson has played in MLB more recently than Puig…
Trolling a rival board with the goal of reigning in enthusiasm by injecting a dose of reality is typically done by stupid people trying to make themselves feel smart…
Of course they are. But sports radio people are supposed to be a conduit of knowledge yet somehow I think plenty of forum posters know more than they do…
The Giants (14), Padres (12), Mets (6) and Rays (4) are not exactly watching their DHs launch HR after HR as they fight for postseason spots.
The Mets did acquire Dan Vogelbach a couple weeks back, but JD is a definite improvement…
If Barnes had been able to recover from a 10 IP stretch that ended 2021, how would a bullpen of All Star Form Barnes, Houck, Whitlock, Taylor, Brasier, Sawamura, Davis, Strahm, Diekman strike you?
I heard buzz the Sox were only interested in Khalil Lee because they wanted to flip h to the Mets, who apparently lusted after him like Pepe LePew after a black cat with graffiti on it….
I do think at best he’s only the second best of the Closing Tanners.
Regardless of last night, he’s a bullpen arm. If you get someone better to close over him, fine. But he’s not a starter and he is someone I want influencing multiple games per week…
Thinking the Sox need to do some buying.
The following SP are all reportedly available and more desirable than Eovaldi
Luis Castillo
Pablo Lopez
Jose Urquidy
Zac Plesac
Aaron Civale
All are controlled for 2023, a year in which the Sox rotation would look to have:
Chris Sale
James Paxton
Josh Winckowski
Kutter Crawford
???
One ? as of today, and Paxton is not exactly Mr. Durability. And of course, Sale is only averaging 16IP per season on his new contract.
At least one more SP is essential. And locking up Devers and/or Bogaerts will only negatively impact the available cash for a free agent acquisition…
