    The Padres would have no interest in Bogaerts. They have so many shortstops now that they’re playing them all over the field. St. Louis makes more sense. Ditto Philadelphia (unless they’re selling too), and maybe Miami if the Sox eat some cash. If Boston is a seller and tries to deal Bogaerts, the good news is there won’t be a glut of talented shortstops up for sale…

    The Sox tried to get Jason Stallings last off-season. Maybe Carson Kelly will be the next target. (The rapid rise of Alek Thomas has pushed Daulton Varsho out of CF and back behind the plate.)

    They are helped immensely by having a farm system that produces a steady stream of talented MLB players. Look at their lineup; only Goldschmidt and Arenado came from other organizations. And they even replace from within. DeJong out; Edmond Sosa in.

    If Xander wants $200mill over 6 years, I’d be surprised if he found a taker. You’re probably looking at 2 prime years before he starts to decline for which he gets $66.7 mill and then 4 years of his descent that earns him $133.4 mill. I don’t think many teams will want 2/3 of a $30mill AAV contract after the age of 32…

    The bottom line is he is allowed to spend, but there is a budget (number unknown to me). So inheriting a big payroll does leave him less wiggle room towards said budget. Hence the dumpster diving/bargain basement shopping/discount discovering/whatever, And when it comes to Bogaerts, it’s quite possible that they knew/suspected he wouldn’t sign for anything close to 6/$140mill, so Story came in as a pre-emptive replacement…
