  1. The albatross is irrelevant until it shows up. And if Judge becomes an albatross by 2026, it will be a factor. Especially if Cole does, too…
  2. Not really. A strawman is an intentional misrepresentation that is easier to argue against than reality. Like arguing against the Sox signing Hernandez because “he shouldn’t have been top priority”…
  3. How can anyone determine if the Sox will be competitive in 2023 already? Did anyone look at the last place 2012 team and predict a World Series title the following season? Or the last place 2015 team and think that this team is ready for the AL East pennant? And who looked at the end of the 2020 season - one that featured one of the worst Sox teams on the past half-century - and predicted an ALCS in 2021? A lot can change quickly in MLB. Give it a chance..
  4. Twice!! Fire him! Then re-hire him! And then fire him again!!!
  5. No they’re not. Just like anyone who wanted to reset, they had no influence whatsoever. If they did, the Sox fire sale would have happened in April when the white flags were flapping in their full glory…
  6. It’s not so much about what we prefer BBS what they will actually do. The Sox have largely treated the DH as its own position and not as a place to rest a regular, which is a strategy I prefer. Why not just get a hitter? Now I am hoping Soxprospects.com is wrong that Eric Hosmer is earmarked for the role. He just isn’t the level of hitter I like to see in a role that requires nothing but hitting. On the free agent market, the guy who appeals to me the most is Brantley. But I have my doubts on even him as he goes through his late 30s. I do like the idea of trading for Garrett Cooper, assuming he can be had…
  7. Based on what? I mean, besides the geriatric options?
  8. All of them were there in 2022. The problem was in 2022, Eovaldi couldn’t repeat his Cy Young caliber season, Barnes couldn’t return to his All Star form, there was no starter depth at the beginning of the season, and the bullpen overall collapsed with the exception of Schreiber. Houck and Whitlock are fine in the bullpen, but both were starters at some point and just not as good. Plus no one was able to backfill them in the bullpen. And everyone got hurt…
  9. Per MLBTR, Bogaerts is the Sox top priority…
  10. If the Sox offer Eovaldi a QO and he comes back, that makes sense to me. But a long term deal (3 years or more on this case) is probably a bad idea…
  11. Those were the true Wacha. The previous 21 starts were the outlier. The real reason was probably simple fatigue from a long season. Happens to tons of pitchers…
  12. I won’t say Atlanta plays in a weak division. I would also say this format favors teams from weak divisions, as they had 76 games against weak opponents to bulk their record. Cleveland and St. Louis just didn’t capitalize on that opportunity…
  13. 3 years $30mill. Not one penny nor one second less. Just putting my agent hat on…
  14. So… two healthy years? He’s still going to get older and a significant chunk of the 10 year $350mill contract there the Yankees eventually sign him to might wind up being a bit of an albatross. He stands a chance to be a far greater albatross if Boston were to sign him, however…
  15. I would imagine he’s lost some up on his fastball in the 50 years since he died…
  16. Not like GMs or executives make player money. Those guys get fired mid-contract all the time…
  17. True. Lefty probably would have settled for a $7,500 salary and a bucket of whiskey. Although I’m not so sure he can physically sign anything these days…
  18. The Marlins will probably just try to move Lopez, s as he has the least control left. As other team that might have a pitching firesale is Milwaukee. Burnes, Woodruff, Houser, Lauer and Lindblom are all arbitration-eligible. They’d probably like to hold on to Burnes and/or Woodruff, but the others will very likely be available. They can keep Lindblom…
  19. So is Lefty Grove. Should we sign him, too?
  20. Yeah that’s not what he said. And you don’t do a good job refuting it by turning into the very fan you think he’s calling out…
  21. Also true. The way I see it, if you win a title the way DD did, with big contracts and removing lots of farm, you’re simply going to have to pay the piper with some down years, like the Sox are doing now. That’s why I hate seeing the Sox go big on free agency. The titles aren’t guaranteed, but free agents adding and declining is…
  22. He’s only 20 or so and would normally be a sophomore in college, but a lot of people gave up on him kinda fast…
  23. 4-7 years is a pretty crazy range to broadcast considering players who will be 23 seven years from now are just learning to drive. Casas and Bello can hopefully contribute next year. Rafaela, Mata and Ward are not far behind. Wong and Valdez on the bench. That’s a decent amount of r rookies for one season. The following year, maybe Mayer and Abreu or whoever. It’s only going a few per year, assuming they’re not traded…
  24. He definitely did, but not by trading starts just by sending away any minimum wage talent that would have made it possible to retain a lot of the more expensive players, something that probably gets overlooked, because it leaves the team in a position to spend to fill more holes than necessary. And it creates a situation where the team has very little support for when the highly paid players start to age and decline. Not to mention the players he added to the farm haven’t provided much outside of Houck, although Casas and Bello both certainly look promising so far…
  25. Not to mention his normal habit of missing substantial time with injuries. He’s not likely to have fewer in his 30s…
