Well I hardly consider a Jon Berti trade a depletion of resources. I actually think the Sox are in a rare position where they have more MLB-ready pitchers than hitters/position players. The OF is particularly weak at the upper levels. Next year (if not sooner) the Sox could see the MLB debuts of Mata, Walter, Murphy and Ward to go along with this year’s class of Bello, Winckowski, Crawford and Kelly. But what position players? Valdez? Anyone else? (Not counting Wong, as he debuted last year.)

My top choice would be bring back Bogaerts. I’d like to see a return to OBP, with whick Kike brings back very little whereas Bogaerts is in the top ten in MLB over the past 3 years. If the Sox do bring in an FA, Kolten Wong and Adam Frazier are the closest matches, but neither really excels at OBP. Jon Berti from the Marlins is an interesting target as he does get on base and is arb eligible in Miami, which often makes a player available. That he plays everywhere certainly helps and fits the mold of numerous players (Taylor, Muncy, J Turner) Friedman grabbed in LA to supplement that team.

Hey I don’t drive that wagon train. I just watch it go by a lot. Yes his fragility could leave him in a part time role at 2b. Cora does appear to be a big fan, as bd lately Arroyo has been showing us why. I would not be surprised to see a Valdez/Arroyo platoon at 2b next season. (Ok maybe a little.)

Nothing was worse than that Pole on the Hill in Houston. What were they thinking? “Hey let’s put a pole in the middle of the outfield for no reason except maybe to see if someone runs into it at top speed!” “Make it safer. Put it on a hill.” “Fine, party pooper. But can I at least still put the alligator pit at third base?”

Which has its uses, but sometimes it’s flat out wrong. Outfield defense, for example, cannot be judged by watching games on TV. Unless the OF is really really bad. Like Duran bad…

I’m not even saying it’s good. I got the impression out was out in the middle of nowhere. I’ve seen plenty of other stadiums right off the highway (but not Fenway, as I-90 is close but has no convenient exit), but I couldn’t tell why it was such a bad stadium. Is the traffic awful? Bad parking? If it’s either of these, is it worse than Wrigley? (Not possible.) I just do t know and as it was November, I couldn’t find out in a timely manner. I’m sure it’s something. mvp complains about it and he lives down there somewhere…

I see it simply as BP and RF or LF. But Bloom is very unpredictable. He might wind up trading Verdugo or Pivetta and just messing with my head. Not like we saw the trades of Benintendi nor Renfroe coming…

Sure they worry about big picture finances. But they all probably think they know more about making a competitive team. And they all probably take into account the long term picture with long term deals, unlike fans who often espouse the credo “worry about next year next year,” which, while it will never happen, is fine for fans to say….

I’m willing to bet they have zero influence. I might be wrong, but I think most people capable of getting a job as MLB GM think they know more about building an MLB team than any fan. And in most cases, they’re probably right…

I’m calling ********. The Sox fan base put up with an 86 year drought and a ever-present cry of “wait till next year.” They’ve seen 3 last place finishes on 4 years. They’ve seen early postseason exits and late season collapses. Yet they always come back. I don’t think you give the fan base enough credit…

Atlanta usually signs them pre-arb years and hopes they don’t flop so much. Tampa used to do this alot, too, and often do it so early, that the contract was cheap enough to be flop-proof, such as with Matt Moore. Boston started this with Whitlock, but one reason they differ from Atltanta is Boston historically signs more free agents from outside to 5+ year deals, which fits leave less available to spend…

Do we really all know how that went down? I doubt Bloom just took first offer. Getting a pitching prospect would have been great, which is why I still prefer the Graterol deal despite his persistent injuries. But it’s really hard to say Bloom pulled the trigger too quickly and LA - who didn’t need this deal nearly as much as the Sox did - would have absolutely upped the ante…
