  1. I don’t like the shift, but I don’t like the idea of banning defensive alignments and strategies. I hated watching managers change pitchers every batter, but that doesn’t mean I like the 3 batter minimum rule.
  2. So now you want to ban bringing the infield in, too???
  3. Again, the NFL has rules on what the offense can’t use for a formation. Defense can put anyone anywhere on their side of the line…
  4. Once again you missed the point…
  5. That’s great. Of course that wasn’t 12 months ago…
  6. Also soccer/football has 4 officials, not three. And that’s not counting the two video officials who work every game…
  7. While used there, the Olympic officiating has gone much further. They’re using AI to see if the butterfly strike is performed properly. They’re trying it out in the “judgement sports” to see if certain stunts are performed properly. They use it in curling. They really do. Not sure how or why but they do. Also I want to say goals in Ilympuc hockey are called using AI. Oh and there’s the aforementioned tennis. Some day I imagine it will be used in boxing to end bouts before it’s too late…
  8. We are talking about alignments and formations. And if we stick to that topic - none. When was the last time you saw an NFL defense called for an illegal formation? Or any penalty other than offsides (you know, that wrong side of the ball thing I mentioned earlier)?
  9. While not right-handed (which really shouldn’t matter here), they do still have Hosmer, who can be in the DH/1b mix. If they sign someone else to be the primary DH - Mancini? Bell? Whoever? - that player doesn’t need to play 1b (despite my only naming players who do)…
  10. If you take Aaron Hicks, there’s probably no limit to what they’ll give you…
  11. Had Hanley not banged up his shoulder on the monster. His first month back in Boston was the road to an MVP trophy. And maybe if they never signed Sandoval, then Hanley doesn’t have to play LF….
  12. Or, fire him because too many Sox fans can’t handle one bad season or one bad trade. Even you said he’s not doing a good job. Did you have that same feeling 12 months ago?
  13. Really it is too early to give up on Duran, but his age plus lack of success in any aspect of the game is extremely discouraging. Franchy isn’t a rookie, and he also isn’t a first baseman. And he probably isn’t an MLB starter. The Sox haven’t shown all that much faith in him either. But if he’s a fourth OF, that’s not the worst thing. I’m surprised how many have written off Winckowski and Crawford, considering the two have combined for about 150 IP this year. They’ve both given reasons to be discouraged as well as reasons to be encouraged….
  14. I don’t have one either way. I’m not even handing 1b to him over Hosmer next season. (Not that my opinion matters there.) The Sox have had what 10 or so rookies this year, all of whom have played more than Casas. And how many of them have people already given up on? (In the case of Ort, I can understand it, since he’s already over 30.)
  15. Guarding the lines is a defensive strategy. While it’s probably not close enough for some to draw the parallel, it is a defensive re-positioning based on game situations. I don’t like changes that limit unpopular strategies. I don’t care if people like the shift. It’s not a good precedent. And how do you enforce it? Can shortstops still cheat up the middle? How far into right-center can the CF go and still be within the rules. You can sit here and cheer all you want; it’s not going away. Teams are still going to move those fielders over as far as they’re legally allowed to…
  16. Again - no. The Olympics just use the automated officiating in numerous events…
  17. There are almost no rules for defense. Basically stay on your side of the ball…
  18. It’s ridiculous to even ask, but the fact that many have already given up on Crawford and Winckowski shows the patience we have for minor league talent around here. “I mean, Casas has been up nearly all week. And he’s done NOTHING to get into the ROY conversation!! Effiin overrated ‘prospect’.”
  19. He’s a human. Give him chances to show you his good and bad…
  20. Carbon-based bipedal life form?
  21. Why? All other sports do it. Do you also think the NFL should ban nickel back package, 3 WR sets, tackle eligible plays, and 2 TE formations? And make every team standardize only on the 3-4 defensive line? MLB rules state you get 9 defenders. I have no problem with someone strategizing the best place to play them and even less when some clever hitter (or runner) takes advantage
  22. They’re not firing anyone after one bad season. Especially when they had multiple objectives and only one went sour….
  23. And the players will only ba able to argue with them in JavaScript…
  24. First of all, tryi g to decide whether a 95mph baseball touched any part of an invisible box that varies in size from hitter to hitter is an insanely difficult task. Have you ever seen a 95mph fastball and how fast it looks when it’s coming at you? Me neither. I could barely see anything over 85mph. I could see needing help here. As for that little box, most fans who complain about umps thought they could call balls and strikes from their Lazy Boys long before that TV square existed anyway. And the amazing part was that they could do it without compensating for that offset angle created by the position of the CF camera. In fact now I bet those same fans are even angrier because they think the umpire can see that little box, too, and is deliberately ignoring to hurt their team…
  25. And then there’s the Olympics, who’ve taken software and automated officiating to whole different levels…
