The time to spend on a RF was 2019. And mvp is fairly confident it won’t be Verdugo out there this year. Right now, I’m not sure there are any positions I’d go large and long for with external candidates. In just don’t think you spend large and long on positions; you spend large and long on special players…

I know. But the notion that they cleared him to play in 2022 and after the season, he got injured so therefore the medical opinion was wrong seems a little too hasty. Did he even do anything to aggravate his flexor strain all year? Is the bracing surgery even on the same tendon? (Is it? I’d assume it was but I don’t know for sure.) I never wanted Story, whom I felt was too much of a Coors product and, once you get him out of the mountains, would morph into Paul DeJong. Mostly because you’re looking at short term needs and criticizing how the long term solutions fill them. The Sox do need a shortstop for 2023. Maybe 2024. But does that mean it’s their top need for the next 11 seasons?

Even that’s just supposition. The doctor may have initially said “this will never require surgery.” Although the second opinion offered up by Dr. Biggio and Dr. Bagwell apparently conflicted with this diagnosis. The problem is the Sox apparently decided to eschew getting a tie-breaking medical opinion from Dr. Jeter and Dr. Rivera…

Of course they do. Haven’t you read MLBTR this off-season and seen the slew of DFAs for Hoy Park and Lewin Davis? The reason teams keep claiming them and exposing them to waivers is they want to keep them, but not dedicate a 40 man roster spot? Know why? BECAUSE THEY CARE ABOUT ALL FORTY PLAYERS ON IT! Really, only have 14 MLB-eligible players to call up doesn’t leave any team much wiggle room. Especially since most teams will need at least 10 spots just for pitching…

Why would the Sox trade anything to pay $16mill to 36yo Brandon Crawford and his 85OPS+ and -4 UZR/150? At some point, the hope appears to be to do anything to keep Duran off the field. Even paying tons and tons money to equally ineffective players who don’t even have the hope for turning things around thanks to Father Time. To me, players like Crawford just aren’t worth that “upgrade”. Not in 2023…

Right now it is possible the Sox are left with 40 players they don’t want to DFA, which makes signing players difficult. What the Sox want (off this is true) is a player to sign a minor league deal that they can promote once teams can place players on the 60 day IL again…

But per your own story, Trevor played a full season on it. There’s a good chance the Bagwell and Biggio thing - which from your post sounds like you only heard about and didn’t actually hear what they said - is nothing but a misinterpretation…

Can’t say about why teams passed on him, although they certainly did. My assumption was simply he was the least interesting of the free agent shortstop class, which, while true, might not be why. Teams passed on Correa last off-season, too, and he’s a franchise-altering player. However, it does seem as though his own teammates are standing up for him in that this was not an expected outcome. Not sure why Boston media talking heads - many of whom deliberately create controversy where there is none - get any more credibility here than Story’s teammates…

So fWAR is better for high K / low BB types, particularly if they can limit home runs. bWAR works better for groundball/soft contact pitchers…

It seems especially useful for pitchers, because fWAR and bWAR each seem to be geared to different types of pitchers. fWAR is based on FIP, which is a function of walks, strikeouts and home runs. bWAR is based on Runs Allowed, which is not what many think, but rather a function of ERA+ and IP…
