  1. Fair point. But the decision makers are at the top…
  2. His surplus value may drop with a new pending arbitration salary Cleveland is less willing/able to pay…
  3. Well hopefully they can put together a reasonable package to acquire him. Or Houser. Or both and leave Whitlock and Houck in the bullpen….
  4. And why bother? The fans always side with the player. As we re-re-re-re-re-discuss the Mookie situation, a negotiation in which the Sox reportedly offered $200million up to $300milll, and Mookie balked reportedly sticking to $400mill, the problem is the Six didn’t counteroffer. But with Bogaerts and Lester, the Sox offered lowball contracts, neither Lester nor Bogaerts countered, and fans blamed the Sox again. I tell you, there may be no easier job in the world than sports agent. You clearly don’t need to negotiate anything…
  5. No. Baseball is all about cherry-picking, because teams play 162 games and everyone wins between 40% and 60% of them. (And those rarities that do fall outside that range don’t fall outside it by much.) You can literally find bad stretches for any team. It just depends how much you emphasize them to support whatever point you’re trying to make. You can’t always do that to football teams…
  6. That was a different Sox office.
  7. That 29-30 stretch started off with a 2-10 stretch. After that they went 27-20 in their last 47 games. I suppose it depends when you like to start. July was the only month in which they were under .500…
  8. So… Three Sox trade targets I expect to hear them linked to. Adrian Houser Cal Quantrill Brad Keller Also I suspect signing Ryan Yarborough will happen at some point…
  9. The Mariners might have a whole new roster by then…
  10. It had more members of the 2020 squad…
  11. No but I expected the team to get worse quickly at some point as Price and Sale aged and no pitching on the horizon to pick up the slack…
  12. The Sox had a slew of expensive veterans declining, no cheap help from below and got 24 games worse. People said this would happen for 3 years. And then it did. And the whole way down, did you deny they were getting worse?
  13. And one Yarborough, who would surprise no one by coming to Boston…
  14. The free agent class difference-makers this year are either old or oft-injured or both. (Not including Sengai, of whom I know nothing.) But the bullpen options are largely uninspiring, so much so I think Chris “The Journeyman” Martin ranks among the top 3 options available. I’d still try to get one of Jansen, Martin and Fulmer. But that doesn’t lock up this bullpen…
  15. The Cliff started in 2019 when the Sox fell 24 games in the standings…
  16. But it was only in the LCS. He’s talking about the Little League World Series…
  17. Betts was worth fewer fWAR in 2021 and 2022 combined than he was in 2018. Benintendi disappeared completely in 2020, and has slowly rebounded over the past two years. No mention of Sale? Kimbrel? Barnes? Martinez? They all maintained, right? And who stepped up from the farm to help out?
  18. Ok. But with such a contract be legal?
  19. You’re not the first one to say that…
  20. True. Of course even in my scenario, I didn’t portray him as smart…
  21. Hey when I’m the guy defending the Yankees, there is absolutely reasonable doubt. I’m fine accusing them of starting the Crimean War, kidnapping the Lindbergh baby and getting Arrested Development cancelled. And I’ll do it all without proof…
  22. Part of me thinks it’s just a story Cohen’s camp out out there because they just don’t want to pay for Judge but don’t want to look cheap. I mean, the only other option is he’s colluding with the Yankees but too stupid to hide it. Why would the Mets brazenly admit this to the press, unless it’s a cover for something they think makes them look worse?
  23. So reportedly Verlander is looking for a contract similar to Max Scherzer’s 3 year $130mill deal with the Mets? At forty years old! Would it be legal for a team to offer him an incentive-laden contract? Something like a league minimum base salary plus $1.5million per start? The MLBPA only allows for incentives to be participation-based, which this is. If Verlander makes all 33 starts, he would earn $50mlion. He wouldn’t drop under $40mill unless he missed 7 or more starts. And the team would be protected somewhat in the event of injury. Would this be legal? Would any team do this? Would Verlander hypothetically go for it?
  24. Sale wasn’t much in the last half of 2019. The Sox did drop 24 games in 2019 and ran into payroll issues that “top prospects” Houck and Dalbec were not able to alleviate. The Cliff was all about the lack of prospects coming up being able to fill in while the high-priced veterans declined. Did that happen or not?
  25. And allowed Kimbrel to be credited with a save in a game that was clearly saved by Benintendi….
