Clearly why he signed with the Angels. Ohtani doesn’t care how the Sox “treated” Betts and Bogaerts. He’s going to take the largest offer. He didn’t hire an agent to get him to a “star friendly” team, because that won’t matter. His contract will be guaranteed. And if he for some reason neither of us can comprehend decided the Sox were unfair to Betts, or, as I’m recently hearing was a star, Christian Vazquez, his agent will deftly explain how that benefits Ohtani, by freeing up more money. Or maybe Ohtani will talk to the one star on the Sox he knows - Masataka Yoshida. I’m sure Yoshida has plenty of tales of mistreatment. I have extremely serious doubts Ohtani signs in Boston for one obvious reason - they simply don’t pay the most to star players anymore. Having Yoshida is really the only thing that keeps them in the running, but even that operates on the assumption the two actually like each other.. -

A handful. Darvish, Nomo, Tanaka, Maeda (when healthy) Maybe another. Senga might join that list. Or he might be another Daisuke, Kikuchi or Ohka. Certainly Daisuke and Ohka had good careers, but neither was really irreplaceable…

Not many Japanese starting pitchers seem to have even reasonably long effective careers. There are numerous reasons, like 1. Most are pushing 30 when they come over 2. Five man rotations and 162 game seasons are a big change. But probably worth noting, only 16 Japanese pitchers have made as many as MLB 20 starts in their career…

I think at that time they hadn’t given up on Goodrum yet. At this point, Dalbec has played 22 innings in his career at SS. A little over two games. Maybe things can pan out somewhat. Or was his one error just too many?

I didn’t get the Mondesi acquisition. I assumed/ hoped it meant he was expected to play immediately or close to it. He didn’t have any setbacks after the deal that I know of. Andrus made more sense, even with his weak start…

Or 1) Bloom doesn’t fill out the lineup cards. 2) Dalbec has two starts at shortstop that were roughly 45 games apart. The pattern here might not be as strong as you suspect.

Did you know that in Dombrowski’s tenure in Philly (2021-22), the Red Sox actually have a better record than the Phillies. And the Phillies are off to a worse start this year. Despite all the complaints on this board about the Sox, I do find it hard to believe the Phillies are excelling at hitting, fielding and pitching on their way to a 4-8 start. Dombrowski inherited a .500 team, and turned it into an 87 win team. They won 5 more games in his second year than before he got there. They had a good postseason run, but they weren’t a great team…

I do think McGuire is clearly the issue with this pitching staff. Kluber’s problem is most definitely NOT that his fastball is averaging 88mph. That can’t be it…

He was a former 1st round pick and top prospect that didn’t pan out as expected. Toronto acquired him because they were hoping he would, but dealt him because he didn’t really pan out there and he had no options left. Chicago used him as the BUC, but needed a lefty in the bullpen and pulled the trigger because - hey getting bullpen stretch run help for the backup catcher is a no-brainer. Not all trades are made to get rid of players. Given his salary, there would have been no cost for a simpler DFA…
