    If you like bWAR as an evaluation tool, you probably shouldn’t be so wild about Wacha, who totaled 1.9 bWAR from 2016 through 2021. 2022 was a clear outlier…

    I’ve often mentioned his low total is influenced by 2020. But I also have REPEATEDLY emphasized the multiple years. Kluber signed a one year deal; if he sucks or gets hurt, he isn’t dragging this team down even next season. Did Eovaldi carry that same mitigation of risk?

    One thing I never noticed was just how small Andrew Vaughn is. You get this 1st round high pick college 1b, and you think he’s going to be built like Casas. Nope. Vaughn is listed at 6’0”, but absolutely not. I think he’s not much taller - if at all - than Yoshida. But he is considerably stockier…

    The whole “upside” thing is bothering you? Seriously? I think every free agent ever was signed based on “upside”. Did you expect him (or any GM ever) to suggest they were going to sign a pitcher based on “downside”?

    I didn’t mind Kluber. He was a 3.0 fWAR pitcher last year; in that respect, or outpitched both Eovaldi and Wacha combined. And I hope the Sox NEVER sign a free agent pitcher to a deal longer than three years…

    He’s only taken high school shortstops. In high school, the shortstop is really just the best player on the team. And most high schoolers change positions in the minors anyway…

    Casas was not perfect on that play. When he caught the ball, he looked across the diamond and had Benintendi stopped halfway from home to third. Casas should have charged Beni and made him commit to a base. But instead he threw it behind Benintendi to 2b and Beni just broke for third. But there was no play at home…

    He had NO PLAY at home. Sheets was at third base before Refsnyder even picked the ball up…

    So you’re saying Eovaldi and Wacha only making 43 of their 64 starts had no impact last year?

    You avoided the question and just named other injured players Bloom signed, none of whom received multiyear deals. Three parter: 1. Are Wacha and Eovaldi injury-prone pitchers throughout their careers? 2. Will this situation get better or worse as they age? 3. So what did either do recently to merit a multiyear deal? Kluber getting a one year deal over them was a case of guessing wrong, but not a reason to sign either for multiple years. (Apparently FYI the buzz is the Sox offered Eovaldi more money than Texas, but Eovaldi chose Texas anyway. I assume the Sox offer was for more guaranteed money, but and Rivaldi bet on himself reaching the bonuses, but this is just a theory.)

    Eovaldi just finished a 4 year contract with Boston during which time he threw all of 407 IP. (Roughly 102 IP per year). He was good at times. He was excellent in 2021, a year in which he threw nearly half of those innings. The other 3 years, including 2022, he was a part time pitcher. So please tell me which of these qualifications made Eovaldi an obvious candidate for a multiyear extension? Ditto Wacha. Wacha hasn’t topped 130 IP in a season since 2018. Now given that folks are complaining about Bloom signing too many injury prone players, like McGuire and Chang (two players with no real injury history), why should the Sox have gone out and given multiple years to two players with annual injury problems? The Sox only missed the playoffs last year by 8 games. How much could they have knocked off of that if they weren’t limited to 236 IP combined from Eovaldi and Wacha?

    Did he? I was at that game so I didn’t get a great view of much behind the plate. I did see him sail a throw to 2b in between inning well over the head of Kike…

    I don’t consider “before extended layoff” and “after extended layoff” to be cherry-picking or having random 2 week samples. But both are small sample sizes that could easily be non-representative of Duvall…

    Absolutely true Duvall needs to get going again. But benching him because of his last 45 at bats is just as egregious. And with Verdugo out right now, there really isn’t much else in the way of options…

    It also feels a bit disingenuous to criticize Bloom for bringing in players with significant history of injury while also criticizing him for not bringing back players with greater histories of injury, and on multiyear deals no less…

    That also applies to the Blue Jays and the Yankees. The Sox have helped themselves in this regard by going 9-1 against these two teams…

    The Sox defense has been noticeably better since moving Kike off shortstop. The Sox are currently 24th in DRS (up from 29th!!) and are somehow 6th in UZR/150. Sixth!! That’s not a typo. And while the evidence of poor defense is that miscue on a nasty grounder by Casas, has anyone noticed Devers has been slapping the leather like Mike Schmidt for this entire series? Defense in MLB seems to be one of those thing most only notice when it’s bad…

    So you think the Red Sox are going to go 30-54 the rest of the way and are worse than a team 7 games behind them in the standings? Because they lost to them once?

    That was also a nasty bounce. It was ruled an error but clearly not one. Official scorer was kinda goofy today….

    No team stays on their “current path” forever and every team sucks eventually. The A’s, like the Rays, flip back and forth between successful and unsuccessful seasons. They’re usually either in the cellar or in the postseason…
