  1. But those post season numbers that represent a good week or two don’t necessarily supersede what was a very weak season-long performance…
  2. That’s what I’ve been saying since the draft…
  3. Fair point…
  4. It was his costume that year…
  5. Grady Little gets a bad rap for leaving in HOF Shoe In Pedro Martinez instead of going to a bullpen that created more unwelcome runs than ExLax…
  6. I think he was the same year as Fields, right? He was a big loss, but the second degree connection to Yordan Alvarez makes for more fun speculation…
  7. There are two reasons. 1. OCD 2. Superstition Not sure about number 1, but number two is absolutely rampant throughout MLB…
  8. The big “what if” was Josh Fields. If the Sox protected him in the Rule 5 draft instead of letting Houston take him, would Boston have been able to trade him to the Dodgers for Yordan Alvarez? And let’s not forget in our Wayback Machine, the Sox selected Marwin Gonzalez in the Rule 5 draft from the Cubs. And then traded him to Houston where he learned to increase his value through cheating. The biggest Rule 5 pick in Sox history may have been another former Yankee in Lenny DiNardo, who appeared in 22 games for that curse-breaking 2004 Sox team.
  9. The award situation has some similarities to Song as well as some differences. Ward is 26 years old and his MiLB career is very bottom-heavy. He has 41 IP in AA and nothing in AAA. It’s not ridiculous to think a player with that background coupled with his injury history is likely to be returned. Except Washington. Full rebuild mode. Certainly Ward has to impress somewhat, but his threshold is probably quite lower than what the Phillies will need from Song. So with Ward, he could slate anywhere from Opening Day starter to “return to sender” by the time this plays out. His likelihood of being returned is certainly below that of Song, but it isn’t exactly non-existant…
  10. But not what I asked. Does he get a year of MLB service time during prolonged Rule 5 status?
  11. Question maybe nobody knows. Players on the Military List do accrue service time. They do. So if Song spent 2023 as an inactive member of the ML, his Rule 5 status starts next year, but would he be one year closer to arbitration eligibility? Probably a moot question, because had Song not been granted permission to play this year, Philly probably returns him to Boston same day and tries again next year…
  12. Depends on how things play out between now and the deadline…
  13. Ok. It appears to be set up as one. Shame. I’d like a lot of them back.
  14. Sale, Paxton and Kluber!!
  15. Is this a Keeper League? I went to my fantasy page for this team and it asked me to set my keepers…
  16. Two years of Soto. AAV would still be more though…
  17. By the time the Sox got Sale, he was making $12-15 mill per year, but on a lower ASV. Soto is making $23mill this year. For Soto, that is a far, far cry from free agent money. That’s only free agent money if you’re Trevor Story…
  18. I can understand that viewpoint. It worked with mixed results when we did the exact same thing to acquire Sale…
  19. So is Worcester native and former Tampa RHRP Oliver Drake, but I was on the very short list of those campaigning to sign him last year…
  20. Doesn’t matter If you are or not. The fact is DD didn’t give up nothing to draft Song. He gave up a 25yo LHP who had actually pitched in the minors at every level. Miller might never amount to much, considering all he got by trading him was a 28yo career minor leaguer. But he still was a casualty of the Rule 5 draft and actually might have a better career than Song, who is both older than Miller and significantly less experienced…
  21. Is he more or less suspect than Song? And no, it turns out teams only have 10 prisoners in their top ten prospect list. Not 12…
  22. I’d call that a very unlikely outcome for a pitcher whose entire career to date consists of facing 65 hitters in rookie ball 3 years ago. And you think he goes from THAT to lasting 162 games against MLB hitters and does so without hurting Philly’s chance to repeat their pennant? I think DD will do the smart thing and complete a trade for Song so he can option him to the minors…
  23. I changed my response upon remembering the true cost above…
  24. Not accounting for injury, since no player is immune. But I think Mayer and Rafaela have another albeit unlikely possibility in not making MLB. And another possibility of making it in a non-impact capacity. Soto is a known monster…
  25. The one thing it did cost him was LHP Erik Miller, who was a top ten prospect in their system and who was left of the 40 man roster to draft Song. Miller has since been traded to San Francisco after not being selected in the Rule 5 draft despite being on everyone’s list of players likely to be selected. So if Miller outperforms Song, it was a bad move by DD…
