  1. Not many Japanese starting pitchers seem to have even reasonably long effective careers. There are numerous reasons, like 1. Most are pushing 30 when they come over 2. Five man rotations and 162 game seasons are a big change. But probably worth noting, only 16 Japanese pitchers have made as many as MLB 20 starts in their career…
  2. The Sox went to the WS with Tony Armas in CF. Duvall was better than Armas, who was also not a CF…
  3. “Averages” 88. No need to make it worse. And this is from the guy who said it was 73…
  4. I think at that time they hadn’t given up on Goodrum yet. At this point, Dalbec has played 22 innings in his career at SS. A little over two games. Maybe things can pan out somewhat. Or was his one error just too many?
  5. Ok but it’s closer than it should be…
  6. I didn’t get the Mondesi acquisition. I assumed/ hoped it meant he was expected to play immediately or close to it. He didn’t have any setbacks after the deal that I know of. Andrus made more sense, even with his weak start…
  7. 2019 was good, exciting baseball?
  8. 73 is also Kluber’s fastball…
  9. Because he was a clubhouse cancer bringing the team down from the inside due to his incessant toenail clipping that launched shrapnel all over the dugout. That’s why the Sox traded Babe Ruth…
  10. Probably won’t see Ceddanne until the Portland OPS vaults up over the .600 mark…
  11. He was killing that team…
  12. I think even 1% on Youk might be a bit high.
  13. Or 1) Bloom doesn’t fill out the lineup cards. 2) Dalbec has two starts at shortstop that were roughly 45 games apart. The pattern here might not be as strong as you suspect.
  14. I think the Dalbec thing might be a bit overblown…
  15. Like punters in the NFL…
  16. Did you know that in Dombrowski’s tenure in Philly (2021-22), the Red Sox actually have a better record than the Phillies. And the Phillies are off to a worse start this year. Despite all the complaints on this board about the Sox, I do find it hard to believe the Phillies are excelling at hitting, fielding and pitching on their way to a 4-8 start. Dombrowski inherited a .500 team, and turned it into an 87 win team. They won 5 more games in his second year than before he got there. They had a good postseason run, but they weren’t a great team…
  17. I do think McGuire is clearly the issue with this pitching staff. Kluber’s problem is most definitely NOT that his fastball is averaging 88mph. That can’t be it…
  18. He was a former 1st round pick and top prospect that didn’t pan out as expected. Toronto acquired him because they were hoping he would, but dealt him because he didn’t really pan out there and he had no options left. Chicago used him as the BUC, but needed a lefty in the bullpen and pulled the trigger because - hey getting bullpen stretch run help for the backup catcher is a no-brainer. Not all trades are made to get rid of players. Given his salary, there would have been no cost for a simpler DFA…
  19. Right. They desperately wanted to unload the backup catcher and his burdensome minimum wage contract…
  20. Ummm …. isn’t McGuire batting .391?
  21. It is worth wondering why Sale, injured at the time, managed to get a better deal than Bogaerts. If you flip those deals (i.e. sign Bogaerts for 5 years $145mill and Sale for 6 years $120 mil), the Sox likely still have both players…
  22. We know by 2018, he was making outrageous demands. But it was obvious he was a keeper before then. I’m not sure if it was possible to re-sign him earlier, but I did even say at the time (back in the thread about signing Price) that I’d much rather have seen him extend Betts. If it was obvious to me, it should have been painfully obvious to DD…
  23. I do not get his bizarre addictions to some of his pitchers. Ort, obviously. Never got his infatuation with Martin Perez. And not sure why he refuses to draft pitching except maybe (personal theory here) he prefers the safer position player picks as a way of bolstering the number of blue chips in the farm, thus elevating their ranking…
  24. The Phillies are 4-8. They had a good run in the postseason last year, but they also only got in because of the addition of the third wild card. Any other season, they would have fit the mold of DD’s Detroit teams that had a high payroll, empty farm, and no bullpen. But then most of their payroll last season was inherited and not due to his spending. Ditto the weak farm…
  25. Obviously it was. Maybe he didn’t like the direction Dombrowski was taking the team, signing Price and extending Sale over extending Bogaerts and Betts, for example…
