  1. There are 134 games left. The Red Sox have actually played a surprisingly tough schedule so far. They’ve played first and second place teams almost exclusively, with only Anaheim and Detroit don’t fit the bill. I don’t expect Pitt and Minnesota to start stop their divisions, but they are playing tough baseball right now…

  3. Does this scuttlebutt exist anywhere besides this one Internet forum?
  4. If you’re lying I’m going to stay up all night sticking pins in a George Pickens doll…
  5. Sale is throwing 93.7 mph. He threw around or less than this in 2016 (5.3 fWAR) and 2014 (5.0 fWAR). While he is unlikely to reach those WAR values again (mostly due to not enough IP), at least we know he can be effective throwing this hard. Kluber is down to 88mph, down from 88.9 mph last year. While he did post 3.0 fWAR last year, he’s nearly 1 full mile per hour slower. Also that is the only other sub-90 season in his career. Unlike Sale, this is uncharted territory for Kluber. I expect more klunkers along the way…
  6. The Sox have a $29mill number one starter totaling at about 1/6 of the total payroll. He just needs to pitch like one. The good news is he has been throwing 93-94 mph and is probably a but gusty after 3 years of inactivity. However he is still 3 years older…
  7. You can be sure. It’s not fair…
  8. Gee, in the first post I quoted, you capitalized “suspect” but not “so far.” How could anyone miss that and not see your point? Casas is 13 for 75. Not good, but even a couple lucky grounders or different scorer calls, and his BA goes up almost 70 points. One good day at the plate and his BA goes up even more. The good about Casas is he is taking walks at a tremendous pace. The bad is he is striking out at a tremendous pace. He’s been more than solid in the field - easily the best 1b the Sox have had since Moreland. And he’s batting at the bottom third of the lineup. There really isn’t all that much about him that is suspect; he’s shown he can hit MLB pitching. His OPS after a career is still only .672, but he’s also only 23. Not every player is a star right away. Since he can field his role and isn’t a starting pitcher, he’s really not among the top issues with this team right now…
  9. I don’t get why some teams change and some don’t. I can see why Texas Senators would be silly, but what was wrong with Milwaukee Pilots?
  10. Then why are so many folks complaining about Casas?
  11. And from Speier, who chose that quote to publish!!
  12. You mean Casas hasn’t conquered MLB yet? He’s had 75 at bats!!! What’s this going to take? 80? 92? If he’s not a top ten MVP candidate by 110 at bats, DFA!
  13. I think Boston is a platoon bat who could probably benefit from some positional versatility. I don’t think MLB starter is in his future, simply because he still struggles mightily against RHP. But that doesn’t mean he couldn’t be a major league player…
  14. Why a closer? Don’t like Kenley?
  15. Exactly. And we have two already…
  16. Denslinger was acquired for German, not Wallace. Wyatt Mills was acquired for Wallace…
  17. Turner to 1b. Valdez/Dalbec platoon at DH…
  18. Yes the Sox will miss out on the entire class of aging veterans who can no longer reach 90 on the radar gun. I am pretty sure Shohei Ohtani isn’t going to factor in the brevity of Kluber’s Boston tenure when making career decisions. They can’t DFA Kluber because, as awful as he has been, the Sox need enough SP to get through 136 more games. And even the occasional Kluber beat down might be oddly beneficial if he lasts at least 5 IP. Plus there is the hope that he can adjust and turn around this abysmal start using only his Veteran Craftiness. After all, he still only has a handful of (uninspiring) starts. But he also did a very good job against a Baltimore lineup that can absolutely hit…
  19. It’s hard to tell by looking at their numbers over the years in a cursory fashion, because of their dedication to the opener strategy. But it did seem for a while that they used Ryan Yarbrough and Yonny Chirinos that way as well…
  20. Sano is available but he also had a .345 OPS in limited action last year and has a 102 OPS+ over the last 3 years. He peaks out as league average at this point. Casas still has less than 200 PA in his career. Far too early to simply give up and replace him with mediocrity…
  21. In theory, you have to REALLY HIT to be a DH. In Oakland and Pitt and KC, you just need to be willing to work cheap…
  22. That’s a good example. The most likely outcome for Enmanuel Valdez is a brief MLB career cut short by a lack of defensive position. Maybe he can catch on as a DH with Oakland or Pittsburgh or some other team where the most important baseball skill is the ability to cash league minimum paychecks and stick around a bit longer. As insanely tough as hitting is, it only gets you so far. Nowadays it seems like the ability to hit could be compared to be physically attractive - it gets attention and gets you in the door. But if you want to stay there better be more going on…
  23. Not even remotely true. AAA always has more than its share of bats that can’t use a glove. Jordan Walker just became another one, at least for now. Isn’t it?
  24. Why is last year’s cost out the door? They knew he was injured when they signed him, and if he wasn’t injured, in no way do they get him so cheap…
  25. Story’s arm got worse, but StatCast still had him throwing harder than Gold Glover Dansby Swanson.
