    Playoffs

Kimbrel had a clear pattern with Boston. Lights out until June/July. Slowly get less effective through August/September. Very hittable in October…
  2. Actually it turns out the Sox staff was more the victims by that kind of thing, as they had the better xFIP of the two. But as long as we’re making silly arguments that prefer 7 game sample sizes over 810 games, maybe the Red Sox had the toughest schedule in MLB because they had to play all those games against the AL East and they didn’t get to play even one game against the Red Sox…
  3. So… Ryan Lavernway over Epstein?
  4. Martin frequently joked publicly about that whole deal. If you watched “The Bronx is Burning”, it was probably (re: extremely likely) an overdramatized version of the story. In fact it was probably (re: extremely likely) overdramatized even if you didn’t watch it…
  5. It did in 1977…
  6. Air Bud 10: CBO - Corgi of Baseball Operations
  7. Arizona’s pitching staff isn’t really all that good. They ranked 22nd in fWAR, 20th in ERA, and 19th in FIP. For comparison, Boston ranked 20th in fWAR, 21st in ERA and 20th in FIP…
  8. Scherzer may have simply reached that point on his career where pitching the bulk of full season leaves him to w worn out for the postseason. He did poorly last year as well…
  9. Aren’t you making the same assumption about Breslow based on his education? Stanford alum Sam Fuld turned down the interview, but isn’t he is the argument for smartest player?
  10. That long ago?
  11. Jon Daniels is lying…
  12. There was a time when most GMs were former players (and that was the only title fans cared about). But nowadays most of them are not. There are still a few. But what team was the last one to win a World Series with a former MLB player heading up the front office?
  13. I think he meant they gave him a promotional coupon for a free chips and soda with a purchase of a large sub at Jersey Mike’s. Limited time offer. But his phone battery died mid—sentence..
  14. If you like, Story’s 0.2 fWAR was still better than Tim Anderson’s (-0.5), equal to Amed Rosario’s, and worse than Javier Baez (0.8). Of course all of them did so in over three times the amount of playing time. Rosario would likely be markedly cheaper. But Anderson and Baez, if available, are not guaranteed to be. If the Sox make him available, Story is absolutely tradable to a SS-needy team…
  15. Yoshida had a 109 OPS+ his rookie year. Same as Hideki Matsui. Hopefully he can carve out a similar career…
  16. Javier Baez could also opt out. But he was only worth 0.7bWAR. Amed Rosario - also 0.7 bWAR. Story is tradable. Just depends if the Sox and the new boss want to…
  17. Hard disagree. Story was worth 0.8 bWAR after only 168 PA. The best free agent (if his option is not exercised) is Tim Anderson, who was worth -2.0bWAR with over 500PA. Think former batting champ Anderson can be had for less than 4 years $93mill?
  18. Never say that. It always can
  19. Hey he quit in August 1st and I followed suit…
  20. They basically brought back the same team in 2012. But with Cody Ross!! Cherington finally broke it up with the Dodger trade in August of 2012 and then won a World Series 14 months later…
  21. He’s trying to rub in that Bloom failed and completely missing that not one single person seems to be even the least bit upset that Bloom is gone…
  22. Right not Story’s contract looks like a steal, assuming he can stay on the field. Given the mediocre free agent market, he’s actually tradable. (San Fran?)
  23. Actually the old system allowed for a team signing a free agent to lose their first round pick, but the team that lost the free agent gained two picks. So Epstein did things like let Orlando Cabrera walk and signed his rough equivalent (and friend) Edgar Renteria from St. Louis. The Cardinals got the Sox first round pick (with which they selected Colby Rasmus), but when Cabrera signed with the Angels, the Sox got their first rounder plus a sandwich pick, and used them (I believe) to draft Ellsbury and Lowrie. Epstein’s exploitation of this rule appeared to cause a revision in the whole draft compensation system…
  24. He also really only got the job because Luhnow was fired after the cheating scandal. In that respect, he might like Cora. Of course, he also might be leery of the PR in a reunion. It does appear the Sox aren’t…
