I guess. But they don’t pay anything until 2026. Apparently if anyone offers him his 2028 team option of $25mill Miami pays $10mill of that, too. That actually increases the likelihood of exercising it, because there is a $10mill buyout in the option ii it’s not exercised, so essentially by paying just that extra $5milo, you get another year of Stanton. That could be bargain…

I’m not overly confident. I’m positive they will be out (or at best, make a token effort to get their names in the press) on Ohtani, Urias and Nola. The best I could see them being seriously linked to is Snell, but I’m not very confident there either. I’m expecting something more like a one year rebound deal like Severino or Marquez or (worse yet) Brad Keller. They’re more likely to do the actual spending in the bullpen…

That’s why next year, Devers needs to be part of a 1b/DH situation (with Casas) and the Sox need to sign Matt Chapman for 3b. And sign Isiah Kiner-Falefa because 1) he’s a versatile defender capable of playing multiple positions well, and 2) our finally pitchers can stop facing him since he can’t hit anyone else…

Porcello’s contract was terrific from an IP standpoint. If a contract working out includes one awful year and one completely missed year on a 5 year deal, then Lackey worked out. Of course how many people were thinking this was a good contract 3 years into it? Eovaldi did pitch 2 full seasons, but one of them was only 60 games long. He shouldn’t be penalized for that, but he also shouldn’t be credited with pitching all of 9 games without getting hurt as a sign his durability woes were behind him…

Eovaldi is more of a racehorse than a workhorse. He has all the talent in the world and surprising velocity that seemingly comes from nowhere all wrapped up in a physique more befitting a high school gym teacher than a multimillion dollar professional athlete. But just like you wouldn’t want Secretariat to pull your plow, you don’t want Eovaldi to anchor your staff. His penchant for throwing as hard as he does as often as he does is not a formula for long term success and certainly not for durability. The Sox did offer him a QO and make him a contract offer, reportedly for more money than Texas did. Of course, if he reaches certain incentives, his current 2 year $34mill deal becomes a 3 year $63mill deal. Eovaldi chose to bet on himself. I don’t know the incentives, but given he is currently on the IL, it might have been an unwise bet…

As he has been only one of two pitchers on that team the entire time, this is not surprising. That you’re essentially saying he threw more IP than Sale is even less. 461 regular season IP over 3.9 seasons really isn’t “workhorse” caliber stuff. It’s roughly 118 IP per season. Normally SP who only last 118 IP are candidates for improvement or replacement, not extensions and raises…

This is just hindsight. JD really didn’t do anything to deserve another year. In 596 PA, he hit 16 HRs and had 62 RBI. Yoshida, with 40 games left, already has 13 HR and 60 RBI. Not to mention, JD is a terrible defensive OF. Yoshida will never win any Gold Gloves (or even get a vote), but he is better than JD out there. There was a reason Cora never gave JD any real OF time last year, and it wasn’t because the Sox were rolling out Rice-Lynn-Evans. Cora didn’t even seem to have a high standard for OF play, as evidenced by how often Duran was out there. Now if the Sox didn’t sign Yoshida and Kluber, and instead signed JD and a pitcher, they could have afforded Jameson Taillon (5.63 ERA), Taijuan Walker (4.03 ERA) or Kodai Senga(3.30 ERA). That certainly could be better, assuming they signed Senga over the oft-injured Walker and avoided Taillon altogether. I think they could have sided both Senga and Yoshida and avoided Martinez and Kluber and been even better…
