And I’ll go another direction - the biggest problem is the defense. (Sox rank 26th in DRS, 30th in OAA) I’m hoping the off-season includes the following: 1. Trade Duran for a controllable SP. A deal for Miami LHSP Braxton Garrett makes sense for both teams. 2. Sign Matt Chapman 3. Move Devers to 1b. Casas to DH. 4. Extend Verdugo. 5. Put Rafaela in CF. 6. Live with Yoshida in LF as the sole defensive weakness…

I disliked the deadline apathy as much as anyone, but to cite using openers those two opener games against Toronto is a bit disingenuous. One of them was more of a gimmick opener followed by Pivetta, who is an MLB starting pitcher. If Pivetta came in one inning sooner (after Schreiber allowed no runs), would this complaint be left? And in the other the Sox only scored one run…

More likely the Sox deal an OF for a SP. Who was the last big contract SP that Boston signed who worked out? Lackey? I suppose if your criteria for “worked out” is a 5 year deal where he was average the first year, horrible the second, didn’t pitch the third and bounced back in the fourth…

That certainly happens. I recall Bryce Harper switch hit in high school, for example. But some, like JT Snow and Daniel Nava, stopped switch hitting deep into their MLB careers Switch hitters are most often very good from one side of the plate only. Players like Victor Martinez, who was equally good from both sides, are freakish rarities. Most are better left-handed. Switch hitters like former Philly/Sox 3b Dave Hollins, who are far better right-handed simply should not switch hit…
