If you go by one year, Cooper (.904) is the leader. I doubt they spend on Cooper. Dalbec park maybe makes more sense than Refsnyder from a versatility standpoint, but Ref has a contract. Of course, they might be room for both on the 26 man. With 4 bench spots, these two, McGuire and Reyes. That does leave the dilemma of who backs up CF. Especially if they use the lineup from Roster Resource…

Not to mention, Tomase conveniently forgets about all the Sox contracts that have since expired. The Sox payroll in 2019 was $240mill. That figure includes Price ($32mill AAV through 2022) and JD Martinez ($22mill AAV through 2022). Were the Sox going to extend Betts, Bogaerts, Vazquez, Schwarber, and Eovaldi and stack all that on top of the existing payroll? Even with 2024 “down” to $252mill, did fans really expect the Sox to be up there in the $280-290mill range for 2021/22?

Also worth pointing out, in Tomase’s article the Sox rotation was Eovaldi/Bello/Giolito/Whitlock/Pivetta, which isn’t that much better than what they have right now. Tomase has the payroll at $252mil, but didn’t acknowledge either side of the Sale trade. No mention of either player. I assume this means in his world the Sox never extended him. Such is the benefits of hindsight…

Yes that would be great. Also, very pricey for the last few years. And acknowledging/recognizing Henry (or any owner) wasn’t going to pay that total price while not having pitching doesn’t mean anyone likes it…

Keller has been worth 7.5 fWAR through 523 IP, which is a total for maybe 3 seasons, making him worth roughly 2.5 fWAR per year. Bello has been worth 2.9 fWAR for his first 214 IP, probably 1 pace for 1.5 seasons, pacing him at about 1.5 fWAR per season to date. Bello has not been as good as Keller to date, but I think he can outperform him over the next few seasons, assuming no injuries. But the risk of injuries are also why the Sox can get away with a lower salary with Bello; he is in a much riskier position.

I assure you the members of the front office are al working together towards a united goal. Our primary gooal is to make the team better and be more competitive in 2024. We have no plans to reduce the budget. We are weighing the current options agaist our needs now and in the future. No. The candidate we arrived at was our top choice all along. Absolutely not. We feel as though we are well on our way towards achieving this goal now that we have the right person in charge. We are allocating our resources as we feel appropriate to establishing ourselves as being perennial contenders. Again I assure you this team is working together as the best assembly of front office talent we have. Any comments directed at the poor performance of any individual have likely been taken out of context. And there is your John Henry press conference for the year. Did you expect anything different?

No. He’s a dirt cheap platoon bat. He could and possibly will be replaced if a cheaper, better option presents itself. Of course, that does depend on the Sox finding a talker for his contract.
