Devers as a hitter stands to be the most helpful player on the roster for getting out of last place. His defense is less helpful in this regard. Move him to 1b/DH where he can continue to do what he does best and the team can mitigate what he does worst…

I don’t want Giolito either. But a GM of any other team might find trading for Sale to be a preferable option to signing Giolito (or some other overpriced mediocre free agent) for way too much money for way too long. I’m using Giolito as a market gauge here…

If the Sox are in contention, yes the core could roll through the playoffs if they don’t go into sell mode. Jansen is winding down his career, but if the Sox do deal him, why not in the off-season when replacements are still available. (And if they are willing to return Houck to the closer role, the new pitcher need not be a closer) -

The $6.5mill is a player option, followed by two $6mill player options. Wacha has a 2-year $32mill team option that the Padres control. It’s not a no-brainer either way. But if the Padres do decline, Wacha has 3 players options for $6.5mill, $6mill and $6mill. No way he exercises the first one. So he might be back on the market. Wacha is talented but unreliable. If he’s available, he might be a decent cheap option. But a Plan B is essential…

A lot does depend on budget. But even simply getting 2 arms better than Crawford/Pivetta will improve the rotation immensely. I’m still on the Sonny Gray Train, but it’s really tough to gauge what type of deal he might get. Last year, the actual offers blow most of the predictions out of the water…

I understand if the goal was to get a pitcher who could blow past the incredibly low threshold of 130 IP. They absolutely failed to get one after being spurned by Eflin and Eovaldi. Wacha actually might be available this year. SD might not exercise the team option, and Wacha has no real incentive to exercise an option he outpitched…

Well there will be some sort of change in personnel going on, and hopefully the new front office has a clue that defense is a big issue and usually the cheapest to fix. And it won’t go away by hoping Devers becomes a more complete player. And keeping that horrible defensive alignment to accommodate a 39yo DH should be a firable offense…

I have no issues with Crawford as a SP. I do think they need two other SPs as well. But a RHH bat to protect Devers in fromt of a league worst defense makes zero sense. Sox were, despite the slow finish, a top ten offense. They were not a top 29 defense…

Too many people say stupid stupid like this. “Don’t spend on the league-worst defense. It will just have to get better.” Or “give Casas a chance to get better.” And “Devers can get better.” And they actually think this will work? Maybe the Sox should also try this approach to pitching. Ignore it and hope it gets better miraculously. “Bello and Crawford will just have to do better.” (Ironically this is actually more likely than Casas and Devers improving defensively by merely trying harder.). Or maybe the Sox should bring back Kluber and hope he can do better!! And Paxton can do better. No bad contracts! Much cheaper!! Ignore and Hope for 2024!!

Wacha wasn’t a difference maker. He was a decent pitcher with major durability issues. Isn’t that another thing we had enough of?
