They are clearly not in any rush to promote anyone from Worcester. Valdez is likely demoted today once they officially activate Grissom. Hamilton will probably be demoted when Gonzalez is activated. Cooper is really a bland journeyman, but will probably be the primary stopgap 1B until Casas returns or he plays himself out of the position. And given the leash Dalbec had with the role, that could be a while even if he struggles. As for those last two 40 man roster spots, most likely they are monitoring the waiver wire for arms. I suppose they could claim Aaron Hicks and become the next team in line to realize this guy is just not going to ever play up to his potential. Or see who Houston DFAs today when they clear a spot for Joey Loperfido. (The Astros have a few borderline pitchers like Dylan Coleman, Blair Henley, Joel Kuhnel and Parker Mushinski that Breslow might like more than Houston does. But I suspect the Stros DFA INF Trey Cabbage, who is far less interesting beyond his cool name.)

Why would they DFA Dalbec when Romy gets healthy? Romy Gonzalez is already on the 40 man roster. Dalbec has options. And, as noted before, they have two open slots on the 40 man anyway. Kavadas can be added at any time with no other moves made. The DFA of Reyes was probably because they were through with him and/or he had fallen out of favor. No. The rules are all about who is on it (active roster, IL, bereavement list, paternity list, some minor leaguers) and how long a player can be on it without promotion (options). Apparently teams can handicap themselves with a smaller one. The MLBPA probably allows this since minor leaguers on the 40 man don’t have to make the league minimum until they make the majors…

Duran is NEVER running 29 mph. Usain Bolt maxes out at under 28 mph…

He has less than 4 seconds to catch, spin and throw. Dansby is one of the weaker arms for a shortstop in MLB (StatCast has him 20th), but I think he had enough time. Assuming his throw was accurate. An accurate throw there however, does complete a demoralizing double play.

If Duran had to go back, it takes a perfect throw from the worst arm of those 3 players out there to get him. Really, they needed Happ to be in shallow LF to have a chance...

If Swanson makes that circus catch, it would have been interesting to see how they try to get Duran out. Does he try to jump up and throw it? Does he flip the ball the the charging Happ? Do we see the rare attempt at a 6-7-2 putout?

Reducing the amount of commercials = less $$$$. I don't see that happening. Active rosters are up to 28 in September, but you can change out players daily, especially with nowhere to demote them to. Just keep it at 26. Does any other sport allow for bigger rosters at the end of the season?

Watch that replay and the big issue was that for some reason, Counsell had the outfielders playing very deep. Happ should have been much shallower, and then called off Swanson and handled that ball coming in positioning himself to take a good chance at throwing out Duran. But with no outs and the winning run on third, Happ was in deep left center. Why? Anything he catches is game-winning sac fly in that position...

No idea. With Grissom coming back and Valdez having an option left, I will be surprised if Enmanuel is not demoted to Worcester. But the Sox could have simply demoted Hamilton and kept Reyes around as the utility infielder. He doesn't excel in any aspect of the game, but he is better at Hamilton than everything except baserunning. Maybe Cora wants Hamilton around to be the occasional ghost runner?

Story's first couple of years were the Sox taking a risk and getting burned. This year, I feel for the guy who just got another injury unrelated to his previous issues. He's only 31, but he does fall into the catoegory of "can we rely on this guy?" Just like Sale...

Sox DFA Pablo Reyes. Interesting in that they could have demoted Hamilton or Dalbec. Cooper and Grissom are both already on the 40 man roster. And they still had an open slot on that from their DFA of Joely Rodriguez. So now the 40 man roster stands at 38 players. They do need to demote one more player. IMO, most likely options are now, in order, Valdez, Hamilton and then Dalbec...

I was on the short list of Fernandez supporters, but I am ok with Slaten taking his role for now. As for who will be better long term? Completely unknown...

Sale had ample opportunities to show us what he can do over the last 4 years, and he was just never able to get out there and do it. Had he stayed and gotten injured again, which would have surprised no one, he would have walked away at the end of the season, looking for whatever deal he could get. He gave the Sox a few great seasons, but those are in the rearview mirror and no one expected him to be that pitcher again. Atlanta was in a better position to give him a chance, because if he did get injured they have more MLB-ready pitchers who can step in for him. He was either going to stay healthy and give them a good season or, at a minimum, lessen the workload for Bryce Elder or AJ Smith-Shawver or Hurston Waldrep or whoever else was stepping up for their AAA squad. Boston simply did not have the depth behind him necessary to take the risk of putting him back on the mound. This was a very smart deal for both teams...

My complaint about Martin in was not really specific to Cora, who had a clear and smart plan that he did not budge from once it started falling apart. But in general the notion of using the closer against whoever comes up in the ninth often means other, often lesser, relievers have to face key hitters earlier. Use your best against their best. That should be the strategy...
