  1. Some of those pre-MLB extensions do backfire. I’m looking at you, Scott Kingery…
  2. To be fair, Urquidy has actually pitched 160 IP at the MLB level. Houck has not. In fact, Houck has only topped 70 one time, regardless of extrapolations. Urquidy would likely be an improvement. Just not necessarily a big one…
  3. He showed you!!
  4. I think so for the names suggested. Obviously Houston might feel different…
  5. As much as I agree Houck, Whitlock and Winckowski all belong in the bullpen, that situation gets less likely with every passing day. The biggest hope lies in the abundance of unsigned free agents, which do serve as a reminder that the off-season isn’t over yet…
  6. They’re very similar in many ways, but Houck’s career high in IP is 106 while Urquidy’s is 164. Houck has had his worst all around year last year with only 106 IP. He looks like he can be an asset at 75 IP or less, but too many more and he just gets exposed. While he dazzles no one, Urquidy at a minimum can eat more innings than Houck, and probably with less reduction in performance…
  7. It’s not like he’s suggesting Mayer, Teel, or Anthony. Or even Wikelman. My question is - is Jordan enough?
  8. I’m all for getting that type of flexibility out of Slaten. Obviously a lot depends on a Giolito bounce back and a step forward from Bello. Neither are unreasonable asks (but that doesn’t exactly make them guarantees either). Add one starter (Clevinger? Lauer?) or trade for one (Duran for?). Sign Duvall for RF. Add one bullpen arm (Peralta? A Chapman?) This team would then look a lot better in my eyes…
  9. Not sure were this going, but Worcester needs starting pitchers, too. Criswell is rotation depth, coverage in the 7th to 10th starter range. He is not battling for a spot in the opening day rotation, unless there are multiple injuries. Of course he probably will make a few starts at the MLB level. I can’t tell you how many, but I can tell you it will be too many. And I put the odds at him finishing the season on the Sox 40 man roster at less than 25%…
  10. My thoughts, the Sox most likely/frequent starting lineup: C - Wong 1b - Casas 2b - Grissom 3b - Devers SS - Story LF - Duran CF - Rafaela RF - O’Neill The defense is better than last year. I’ll stop there…
  11. Have Bill Paxton and Robert Duvall ever made a movie together?
  12. 10 games over. Interpret that as you like…
  13. Pedro had them at 12-15 games better with improved defense last season. Seems like a stretch to me. I can’t say the D has improved for 2024 since I don’t know the starting lineup. I’m just fired anyone in the front office said the word “defense”…
  14. The man did unlock Kevin Gausman…
  15. Second team = second chance now? This page needs updating. https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/second%20chance
  16. I don’t see it as any sort of second chance. In order to get a second chance, you need to fail on your first one…
  17. You literally said he was on his second chance. He skyrocketed through the Atlanta farm system - no small feat considering who else was there with him, and the primary focus is on the fact that Atlanta can’t play him in baseball’s most difficult position (not counting catcher). What does Grissom have to do to receive any sort of comment that’s not about his flaws?
  18. If only the Sox had definitive answers about the future like all 29 other teams have. Things have to break right for any team to win it all; there are no sure things that fans want.
  19. Apparently my dreams of Houck and Whitlock shortening games are getting less likely by the day. https://www.yahoo.com/sports/garrett-whitlock-more-granite-impressively-143350301.html Still need starter depth and some serious backfill in that bullpen…
  20. Yes I did. I chose both, as they are not mutually exclusive. Also the question was extremely laden with bias that I sifted through. I think the Sox have a “worthy” pitching staff, which means they did cobble one together and I believe their statements. I even gave my rationale as to why I think it is a worthy pitching staff. Depending on your interpretation of worthy, I suppose…
  21. I think this staff is better than many give it credit for. Granted, that’s not a high bar. But this team won 156 games over the last two years with virtually no contribution from their ace (108 IP over two seasons). I do think they need more depth, especially if they plan to bump Houck into the rotation. The biggest gripe I’ve had is they keep using the bullpen for starter depth. I’d love to see both Houck and Whitlock go to the bullpen and stay there, but it looks like Houck is a starter and Whitlock is depth. Cooper Criswell and Max Castillo don’t dazzle me as actual depth. I don’t see either finishing the season in the organization. There are plenty of arms that can and will take MiLB deals. Grab some…
  22. They did probably call him up while Swanson was holding down the shortstop role. But there is absolute truth he was never handed the role and washed out. The Braves did bring in Arcia for a reason. But if the criticism is that he washed out at a position the Sox don’t need him to play anyway, I’m not entirely sure that’s much more than criticism for the sake of criticism .
  23. In think the logic is “he was acquired by the Red Sox, and since the Sox were bad last year they can clearly only acquire bad players. So this guy is obviously bad.”
  24. Vaughn Grissom turned 23 two weeks ago, and already fans are dismissing him as a player who washed out in his first go-round? Seriously? “He had 236 plate appearances at 22 years old and was only a little bit above league average as a hitter!!” doesn’t strike me as the most damning criticism…
  25. I’m still in…
