  1. But what he does do that I like is any ball hit to an outfielder that requires two or three lateral steps to field suddenly becomes a potential double. He stretched enough singles into doubles last year to make up for a few missing stolen bases. What scares me about Duran was his .381 BABIP. Not entirely sure that is sustainable. Speed does help BABIP, but .381 is a bit much to expect...
  2. The Dodgers looked a tad rusty, too. And for $70mill, one might think Ohtani would learn some basics about baserunning. Or do you have to pay more to get that aspect of his game?
  3. I am hoping Whitlock's durability issues last year were related to his hip surgery in the off-season, but even then he has never thrown more than 120 IP in a season. And that was back in 2018, when he was pitching in A, A+ and AA ball...
  4. Yes. Stop raiding the bullpen for starters. But the only way to do that would be to GO GET SOME STARTERS. The season is officially underway, and Montgomery is still available albeit clearly unlikely. Sleazinger and Lorenzen still need jobs and are reportedly only looking for 1 and 2 years respectively...
  5. Hoping his time in RF is limited to emergency fill-in. Duran has the speed to cover RF at Fenway, but he really is not a good outfielder and doesn't seem to take advantage of that. I hope Cora deploys the Duran-Rafaela-O'Neill outfield or the O'Neill-Duran-Abreu outfield to start the season. If O'Neill is surprisingly not available, Duran-Rafaela-Abreu is probably the best alignment, but it leaves very little in the way of depth...
  6. But when he played 2b there, he did so as a former shortstop. So technically, he is a former former shortstop…
  7. There has been some criticism of the Sox repeated drafting of middle infielders. I present today’s starting defensive alignment for the San Diego Padres 1b: Jake Cronenworth, former shortstop 2b: Xander Bogaerts, former shortstop 3b: Tyler Wade, former shortstop SS: Ha-Seung Kim, current shortstop LF: Jurickson Profar, former shortstop CF: Jackson Merrill, former shortstop RF: Fernando Tatis, former shortstop DH: Manny Machado, former shortstop They just need JT Realmuto behind the plate…
  8. Like those old bumper stickers in Atlanta. “Go Braves!! And take the Falcons With You!” Obviously when both teams were struggling heavily…
  9. The A's drama should be easy for fans. Go if you want to. That franchise is leaving whether you go or not...
  10. I would think it’s closer to Communism than Capitalism. It’s obviously not Communism, as the government doesn’t control any part of it…
  11. It is odd that fans almost universally side with the players, who, let's face it, are no longer struggling financially. The entire system boils down to a few hundred people who cannot agree on how to divide up roughly ten billion dollars. I think their all in the wrong...
  12. MLB has made some dumb rule changes recently, a list topped by the ghost runner, but one very good rule was limiting September call ups...
  13. I do think at some point the Yankees have a spending limit. Can they/should they drop well over $100mill AAV on two corner outfielders (one with frequent injuries) and an oft-injured DH? They might do it, but I can see it causing some major problems. I would think Soto's agent should see that Soto has far more earning power than Judge. What would that extension look like to make Soto give up on free agency before his age 26 season?
  14. All I know about Montgomery is he wants 7 years, per multiple reports. As for Snell, I only know 5 years $150mill was not enough...
  15. I am living in a world where they see him as a solid target. Do not ruin my world. Let Henry do that a year from now...
  16. I don't really think Abreu is going to make himself a candidate, and I hope that his candidacy doesn't rest on that 10 hit difference (in 500 ABs). Evan Carter still qualifies as a rookie. And his potential teammate Wyatt Langford seems to be another big name. I've seen Langford play a couple times this summer, and I wouldn't call his fielding atrocious, but I think with some work he can get to that level. Colt Keith (Tigers) and Nolan Schanuel (Angels) appear to have starting jobs as well. The NL has the Jacksons (Chourio and Merrill) along with two Japanese imports that could take the award...
  17. I would be ok (not quite happy, but at least I would understand it) if the Sox were holding out on spending to make a run at Juan Soto next year as the marquee name replacement for giving up on Mookie Betts. I do doubt that is the case, however...
  18. I hope not. They've been sued for that three times already and never won a case. If it happens again, will it lead to another expansion?
  19. I wonder who are the most likely other candidates. The NL is fielding some top prospects, all named "Jackson" and all apparently starting in CF. But who else in the AL? Will Jackson Holliday be a candidate? Will each league have a ROY named "Jackson"?
  20. A one billion dollar decrease also means about 25% of what was spent on last year. And about 33% of what was spent this year went to Ohtani and Yamamoto and was spent by one team. This might just be one year, but the market also might speaking very loudly. I seriously doubt the players make up that billion solely with the deals for Montgomery and Clevinger…
  21. Are the Sox even tanking? It seems like they’re just not spending, which isn’t the same. In fact, it’s probably worse. To truly tank, they should also be dealing way any valuable asset. Not only to save money, but also to get some Future Hopeful. That Jansen, Martin and Pivetta are still here, along with a few others, seems more like apathy than actual rebuilding…
  22. In the olden days, call ups after August 31 got no credit for service time. They were still into maintaining control even then…
  23. Snell can come back to free agency shortly without a qualifying; Montgomery still has that option looming…
  24. That’s a huge letdown for a postseason hero without a qualifying offer. I guess the trick this year to making lots of money was play in Japan…
  25. I would never equate “probably” with a 10% chance. So I’ll defer to “non-zero”. I do think his playing in AA last year made me think the path would be quicker…
