  1. If Duran had to go back, it takes a perfect throw from the worst arm of those 3 players out there to get him. Really, they needed Happ to be in shallow LF to have a chance...
  2. If Swanson makes that circus catch, it would have been interesting to see how they try to get Duran out. Does he try to jump up and throw it? Does he flip the ball the the charging Happ? Do we see the rare attempt at a 6-7-2 putout?
  3. Reducing the amount of commercials = less $$$$. I don't see that happening. Active rosters are up to 28 in September, but you can change out players daily, especially with nowhere to demote them to. Just keep it at 26. Does any other sport allow for bigger rosters at the end of the season?
  4. Watch that replay and the big issue was that for some reason, Counsell had the outfielders playing very deep. Happ should have been much shallower, and then called off Swanson and handled that ball coming in positioning himself to take a good chance at throwing out Duran. But with no outs and the winning run on third, Happ was in deep left center. Why? Anything he catches is game-winning sac fly in that position...
  5. Eddy Alvarez will also come in handy if MLB ever decides to change from the ghost runner rule and replace extra innings with speed-skating races...
  6. Given how they keep bumping relievers into the rotation, maybe they could have kept Reyes for the bullpen
  7. On this team, they are. Now, they are not GOOD infielders anywhere...
  8. No idea. With Grissom coming back and Valdez having an option left, I will be surprised if Enmanuel is not demoted to Worcester. But the Sox could have simply demoted Hamilton and kept Reyes around as the utility infielder. He doesn't excel in any aspect of the game, but he is better at Hamilton than everything except baserunning. Maybe Cora wants Hamilton around to be the occasional ghost runner?
  9. Story's first couple of years were the Sox taking a risk and getting burned. This year, I feel for the guy who just got another injury unrelated to his previous issues. He's only 31, but he does fall into the catoegory of "can we rely on this guy?" Just like Sale...
  10. Sox DFA Pablo Reyes. Interesting in that they could have demoted Hamilton or Dalbec. Cooper and Grissom are both already on the 40 man roster. And they still had an open slot on that from their DFA of Joely Rodriguez. So now the 40 man roster stands at 38 players. They do need to demote one more player. IMO, most likely options are now, in order, Valdez, Hamilton and then Dalbec...
  11. I was on the short list of Fernandez supporters, but I am ok with Slaten taking his role for now. As for who will be better long term? Completely unknown...
  12. Sale had ample opportunities to show us what he can do over the last 4 years, and he was just never able to get out there and do it. Had he stayed and gotten injured again, which would have surprised no one, he would have walked away at the end of the season, looking for whatever deal he could get. He gave the Sox a few great seasons, but those are in the rearview mirror and no one expected him to be that pitcher again. Atlanta was in a better position to give him a chance, because if he did get injured they have more MLB-ready pitchers who can step in for him. He was either going to stay healthy and give them a good season or, at a minimum, lessen the workload for Bryce Elder or AJ Smith-Shawver or Hurston Waldrep or whoever else was stepping up for their AAA squad. Boston simply did not have the depth behind him necessary to take the risk of putting him back on the mound. This was a very smart deal for both teams...
  13. My complaint about Martin in was not really specific to Cora, who had a clear and smart plan that he did not budge from once it started falling apart. But in general the notion of using the closer against whoever comes up in the ninth often means other, often lesser, relievers have to face key hitters earlier. Use your best against their best. That should be the strategy...
  14. I forgot he came in for the 8th. Interestingly, that means my concerns about leaving Martin to face Tauchman (posted as Tauchman came up) were actually justified. I see what Cora was hoping for - use the setup guy for 9-1-2, and then Jansen gets the more difficult part of the order. But once Martin failed to get Crow-Armstrong and Hoerner out, it greatly reduced the chances of Jansen pitching to the heart of the order. And saving the best reliever for the 5-6-7 hitters seems like a big waste of talent to me...
  15. Well he was technically on the 2020 Red Sox. Pitched about as well as Sale did that year, too...
  16. Ryan Fernandez is off to a good start in St. Louis for his first 11 IP. Thad Ward is getting hit hard on the Nationals' AAA team. I'd gladly take Whitlock and Slaten over Ward and Fernandez...
  17. Please no. Someone needs to stay in the bullpen. Bullpens are important...
  18. Wade Miller questions his omission...
  19. I'm ok with the warmup toss thing, although they do give the TV station an opportunity for a commercial. I say get rid of September call ups. Just use a 26 man roster all year long and don't give managers larger bullpens. One of the biggest reasons for the 3 batter rule was Bruce Bochy, who would call up every available pitcher when he was managing the Giants and make 3 to pitching changes in an inning multiple times in a game. If he did not have an expanded bullpen, he would not have been able to do this. I know they limited the September call ups, but, frankly, not very well. You can still use all of the remaining 14 players on the 40 man roster, but limit the number per game. Big deal. So managers can use 2 extra relievers today, and 2 different (and recently activated!) extra relievers tomorrow. Just stop it. If you want to give a chance to some of your younger players, fine. Just DFA some of your older players to make room for them. You know, like every other sport does...
  20. Thank you for the recognition. On post 68, I called for Jansen to come up and face Tauchman (and any subsequent hitters). Then Tauchman homered. My logic, which I didn't have time to get in that post, was to use the best reliever against their hottest hitter and best hitters. I wasn't calling for a lefty (although Booser was available), since there we no outs and unless Tauchman hits into a triple play, the new pitcher also has to face Happ (switch hitter) and Morel (RHH). If Jansen gets through those 3, Busch and Swanson are not pushovers, but Slaten or Weissert were available to close the game out...
  21. To justify his salary, he really just needs to be a 1.0 fWAR player. Can he do that as a centerfielder?
  22. I can understand that. To me, I’m glad to see them extending younger players again. Yes, Rafaela might not have been the best player to start with, but I’m hoping they get better. Plus there’s always the (extremely good) chance Breslow sees something in him I don’t see yet…
  23. I didn’t like Bernardino starting out in Worcester either, but this is one of those things that gets magnified because it’s the opening day roster. No one thought Bernardino would be down there for long, but his temporary demotion gave the Sox a chance to tryout another bullpen arm. It’s not like he was cut in favor of Rodriguez; the Sox clearly weren’t so that sold on Joely. A returning player on a minor league deal? Not exactly a high vote of confidence…
  24. But at his AAV with his versatility, he’s tradable or benchable if the bat doesn’t improve…
