At $600K, the only pitching draft picks paid more over the last decade are Jay Groome, Tanner Houck, Michael Kopech, Shaun Anderson, and some guy named Dalton Rogers. No idea about IFA pitchers…

In the draft alone, they have given out 5 since giving Tanner Houck $2.6mill in 2017. The draftees the Sox have given out $500K+ bonuses to are Durbin Feltman, Elmer Rodriguez, Ryan Zeferjahn, Dalton Rogers, and Matt Duffy. None of these bonuses exceeded $700K. In fact, only Dalton Rogers exceeded $600K. If you had just aimed a little higher with your barrier, the numbers would have dropped off rapidly. If we go back the full ten years, you can add Jay Groome ($3.2mill), Shaun Anderson, Michael Kopech ($1.3mill) and Jared Cosart to the 6 mentioned above...

I don't care whio they draft in the first round, as long as they think that is the best player available. Drafting for position is probably the fastest way to ruin your draft. Any pitcher they draft could easily be years away from making an impact. Better off bulking up the farm system as best you can with blue chip prospects and pursuing trades for pitchers already more established, even if they are only established in the upper minors...

The stats people have never really come up with a way to account for a team beig inefficient at double plays. It's probably rolled into some larger more encompassing stat, but it is one area that might require more specialized attention. Teams probably have ways to measure it, but it is largely unknown to those of us who have no real use for it, but would probably like it anyway...

I bet ERA was, especially when originally applied to starters. Of course this stat goes waaaay back but was originally created for relief pitchers since they already had a metric to measure starting pitchers - wins…

The real problem with defense is that errors really become the only part fans can evaluate while watching a game on TV. Well, that and Web Gem type plays, although they can be misleading, too. But for the rest of the plays, we only see what the camera lets us. That's why I like DRS, OAA and UZR. granted, they don't always agree, but really, they don't measure the same things anyway. And for team defense, I don't like Defensive Efficiency, which can be a worthless stat since ballparks can drastically effect the numbers on balls in play hit into the outfield...

Defense is more than just errors. The balls your players don't get to that others do are hits...

I think Casas is the only player that would cause issues with the 40 man roster this season. Giolito, Story and Murphy are not coming back this year. I suspect Giolito and Murphy are probably both out until after the All Star break in 2025 (but will have to be added to the 40 man in November)..

They are clearly not in any rush to promote anyone from Worcester. Valdez is likely demoted today once they officially activate Grissom. Hamilton will probably be demoted when Gonzalez is activated. Cooper is really a bland journeyman, but will probably be the primary stopgap 1B until Casas returns or he plays himself out of the position. And given the leash Dalbec had with the role, that could be a while even if he struggles. As for those last two 40 man roster spots, most likely they are monitoring the waiver wire for arms. I suppose they could claim Aaron Hicks and become the next team in line to realize this guy is just not going to ever play up to his potential. Or see who Houston DFAs today when they clear a spot for Joey Loperfido. (The Astros have a few borderline pitchers like Dylan Coleman, Blair Henley, Joel Kuhnel and Parker Mushinski that Breslow might like more than Houston does. But I suspect the Stros DFA INF Trey Cabbage, who is far less interesting beyond his cool name.)

Why would they DFA Dalbec when Romy gets healthy? Romy Gonzalez is already on the 40 man roster. Dalbec has options. And, as noted before, they have two open slots on the 40 man anyway. Kavadas can be added at any time with no other moves made. The DFA of Reyes was probably because they were through with him and/or he had fallen out of favor. They didn't need to DFA him; they must have wanted to...

No. The rules are all about who is on it (active roster, IL, bereavement list, paternity list, some minor leaguers) and how long a player can be on it without promotion (options). Apparently teams can handicap themselves with a smaller one. The MLBPA probably allows this since minor leaguers on the 40 man don’t have to make the league minimum until they make the majors…

Duran is NEVER running 29 mph. Usain Bolt maxes out at under 28 mph…

He has less than 4 seconds to catch, spin and throw. Dansby is one of the weaker arms for a shortstop in MLB (StatCast has him 20th), but I think he had enough time. Assuming his throw was accurate. An accurate throw there however, does complete a demoralizing double play.

If Duran had to go back, it takes a perfect throw from the worst arm of those 3 players out there to get him. Really, they needed Happ to be in shallow LF to have a chance...
