  1. The Mariners used Mitch Garver at DH, and he was a miserable failure there with a .627 OPS. He was abysmal at home (and had never hit well in Seattle in his career), but his road numbers didn’t exactly dazzle. Historically he does better at Fenway. While Seattle would undoubtedly like to replace Garver’s minimal production, the contracts are miles apart. Yoshida is owed $55.6mill over the next 3 years; Garver is owed $13mill for next season. While Yoshida would be an upgrade for Seattle (and possibly a chance to shed Garver’s deal), how much do they really like Yoshida? Is there a cash amount that makes it happen? Not exactly sure, but when trying to move Yoshida, this is probably more realistic than Montgomery, who will draw the interest of multiple teams, most of whom are not trying to move a $55mill contract in return. Not sure why the Giants fit. They could replace Soler for less money, and possibly just turn to Blake Sabol, whose bat belongs in their lineup…
  2. If Yoshida didn’t have shoulder surgery, it would be more suspect. But we do know he injured his shoulder and that definitely would have impacted his hitting. The man actually is a good hitter whose numbers in Japan are similar to several other players who have come over to the USA and been successful. And he absolutely was hitting well this year until August 19. It’s extremely possible his shoulder issues started around that date if not actually on it. Id like to have used OPS+, as Fenway (105) was slightly better for hitters than Citizens Bank (102). But unfortunately those numbers are not available for partial seasons. Yoshida might be overpaid. But I think he’s also undervalued…
  3. Why? Yoshida had an .825 OPS on August 19. After that point it was .608 through the rest of the season. It’s possible that was when his shoulder issues started. If healthy, an .825 OPS from Yoshida seems possible, and IMO is perfectly acceptable. People have wished we retained Schwarber, but his OPS in Philadelphia is .832. I don’t think the barrier for unacceptable performance from a DH sits between .825 and .832..
  4. Yoshida will definitely be on Boston’s payroll next year, and almost equally likely wearing their uniform…
  5. I can be more progressive…
  6. Especially since Pederson has a mutual option for $14mill that he might not exercise coming off a 3 fWAR season if he hopes to get a longer deal…
  7. Impressive and not excessive…
  8. I assume you mean the deal that doesn’t involve Campbell?
  9. If MN is cutting costs and trying to stay competitive, Lopez is the guy to move, as he is owed roughly $65mill over 3 years. On BTV, Lopez’ surplus value is $37.4mill, surprisingly high for his contract. This makes him a near perfect match for Kristian Campbell ($38.6mill) and that undoubtedly gets the deal done. The obvious problem to me is I’d be hesitant to give up a MLB.com top ten prospect for Lopez’ contract. A deal of Wilyer Abreu (whose skill set matches up nicely with the soon-to-be-departed Max Kepler) and David Hamilton fills two potential holes for them nicely and has a surplus value total ($40.8mill) slightly in the Twins’ favor. But they might insist on Campbell or no deal…
  10. Certainly Higashioka picked the right time to have a career year at the plate. Given his age, he can almost certainly be had for less money and shorter years than the much younger Jansen. Higashioka wouldn’t surprise me at all as a short term solution paving the way for Teel…
  11. I will say we probably don’t need a $300mill pitcher if he can be readily replaced by a discarded relief pitcher in October. I agree there..,
  12. Or breed pitchers. Sign Verlander and Scherzer for stud purposes and well grow our own! Thats what we do down here at Breslow’s Arms Farms!
  13. I think that’s what Larry is looking for. Breslow inherited a rotation 60% comprised of those arms…
  14. If DD was fired for being too megalomaniacal, it’s certainly not a reason he shared with the rather docile, timid Bloom. Bloom showed us that while the meek might inherit the Earth, they’re still going to get fired for running it improperly…
  15. And all it took was a simple mention of Occam’s Magical Hair Growth Tonic and Dessert Topping…
  16. Agreed. The White Sox drastically influenced the playoff picture this season. Without them, KC was under .500 and Detroit barely over. Minnesota only stayed in the race as long as they did because their 12-1 record against the White Sox fluffed them up…
  17. I think you might have lost sight of your original point (Henry fires ‘em every 4 years) or you have perfectly misapplied Occam’s Razors and given me something the exact opposite, which I suppose would be Occam’s Magical Hair Growth Tonic*. If Henry wanted Cherington gone, he wouldn’t hatch some plan involving hiring a control freak to usurp all Ben’s responsibilities. His Occsm’s Razor would be to simply fire Ben… *And Dessert Topping
  18. While folks on this forum might not be satisfied with the solutions, I think the Sox already know who the closer and setup pitcher will be. Even if they plan on returning Fulmer back to the rotation.,,
  19. Come on. We suspect Ben was demoted/stripped of responsibilities, but we really don’t know if that’s the case or not. Or what his responsibilities would have been. You’re speculating on his role and then deciding whether or not he liked it. Maybe he left because of a new, reduced role. Maybe he left because he didn’t like Dombrowski. Lots of speculation here. It’s either: 1. Cherington was to have his role reduced, possibly for reasons related to performance, or 2. Dombrowski is a control freak who insists on handling everything himself. There are reasons a to believe either or both scenarios…
  20. I am not so certain the success of the Dodgers creates an argument for a successful low budget team…
