    They’ve added 6 relievers. Granted that is counting Whitlock and Crawford. But not Guerrero. If Anthony and/or Campbell sign extensions, I would suspect that puts them in Boston immediately…

    Honestly, if Anthony and Campbell did start out, it’s probably not a bad thing. The two bats they’d hopefully be replacing are Rafaela and Hamilton/Grissom/Romy. Step up? Down? Or lateral?

    Not to mention, the pitching staff, particularly the rotation, is vastly improved. Cooper Criswell was 5th on the Sox in games started last year. Right now he’s somewhere in the 7-10 range on the SP depth chart. And maybe even lower. For all of the “we lost Jansen and Martin and didn’t replace them” panic, the Sox bullpen has added (or will see the return of) Hendriks, Whitlock, Fulmer, Chapman, and Wilson. And will probably see Kutter Crawford as well. The only pitcher from last year’s opening who will (barring injuries) be in this year’s opening day bullpen is Justin Slaten. Relief pitchers the Sox relied on last year like Bernardino, Weissert, and Kelly are very likely depth starting out in Worcester. But yes, they didn’t replace O’Neill. Well, maybe with Story…

    What about a $200mill contract that is $200 a year for one million years? With deferrals?

    Anthony in LF, Duran in CF and Abreu/Rafaela in RF is a good all-around OF with some safety built in if Anthony struggles. Just return Duran to LF and Rafaela to CF full time. Of course this flies against the team declaration about playing Rafaela in CF “as much as possible.” Campbell has a shot at 2b, but so do Grissom and Hamilton, and there won’t be enough UI roster spots for everyone …

    I keep telling you - we’re signing Bregman. It’s a much better plan than trading Casas for Herrera and Arenado. I mean, try and figure out the Sox lineup with Arenado and no Casas. Who hits 3-5? Story? Yoshida? Abreu? Pretty docile lineup if you ask me…

    Many take shorter offers or have opt outs because they do want to try free agency. That’s why I’m thinking he goes 3-5 years tops. Hit free agency at 31 and he could still get PAID.

    Foxx at 18?!?! Behind Parnell, Nomar and Lester?!?! Jimmie Foxx is so underrated in baseball history. Second player to hit 500 HRs, and retired as #2 all time on that list. He joined the Sox later in his career, but still played 887 games for Boston and had a 1.034 OPS in them. Oh and he once hit 50HRs on a team that didn’t hit 100 hrs. (1938 Red Sox) Pretty sure he’s the only name on that list in MLB history…

    I’m sticking with Alcantara as a good comp. Same age. Similar careers to date. Same salary for the age 26 season. I do think 5 yrs $55mill is light, but it’s probably a closer starting point than many think. I’m thinking a 4 yr $80 mill extension. Crochet gets security and had a chance to test free agency before it’s too late…

    How many for Yamamoto? I don’t see Yamamoto as a comparison at all. Glasnow was 2 years older when he extended, but that was too different. Crochet will be two years older than Yamamoto but he’s the benchmark? I think too many are hoping the Sox avoid Lester 2.0 by overbidding massively…

    But 27yo free agents, while far from common, are not unheard of. It does seem like many pitchers on track to reach free agency that young do extend beforehand, but also sign extensions short enough to still enter the free agent market at an age commensurate with their peers…

    Vlad’s reported contract demand of $450mill will be a much bigger obstacle than the 2 years $36mill left on Yoshida’s deal when Vlad hits the market…

    For performance, MLB certainly should have more weight than Japan. But what about for durability?
