  1. The deal did wind up not working out, but it was a worthwhile gamble given thst it was only one year and not an outrageous price for a declining pitcher given the contracts given to other free agent pitchers at the time like Yovanni Gallardo and Mike Pelfrey, both of whom signed multi year deals. Given that $13mill want really elite pitcher money at the time, I would just as well assume only take the risk on the one year deal in that case, rather than saddle the team with a declining pitcher for multiple seasons....
  2. I believe it is the only professional all star game to still receive network coverage, so they must think it has some value...
  3. When you consider this game was originally started to create a retirement fund for aging and former players, the reasons for still having it become less and less. Especially given the current salaries and the MLBPA. It's not like any former players are struggling financially as there were in 1935. The only reason it continues is tradition. I'm fine with that and I'm fine with fan voting for players. As long as no one ever tries to attach any significance to this game again. The whole "home field in the World Series" was about the dumbest idea ever in MLB history...
  4. Makes we wonder about how it went on as the year progressed. Earlier in the year, he was facing more team aces. but as the year goes on, he plays a lot more games against the next guy in the opposing rotation however that plays out with off-days, injuries, days off and rain outs....
  5. When they acquired him, I figured he would be useless. He has actually been a pleasant surprise the past few seasons. Plenty of other more traditional pitchers also turn into pumpkins at times, but with non-knuckleballers, that does seem to be more acceptable...
  6. It's a Chicago thing. Those 12" leagues also wear gloves, but all men's softball out here involves 16", bare hands, and mangled fingers..
  7. There has been a few injuries to contribute. But then Hanley turns 35 this year and isn't likely to get healthier and certainly not back to what he was 5 or 6 years ago...
  8. What is men's softball like in NC? In Chicago, it becomes slow pitch game with a 16" softball and the players do not wear gloves; it's all bare-handed. Male softball players typically have very gnarled fingers if they have been playing for any length of time. Women's softball is always a faster pitch game with a smaller ball and the players wear gloves...
  9. It may have been a situation where Cora basically decided not to burn out he bullpen chasing a win. In this case, it worked out. Usually it doesn't. But if a manager decides to sacrifice one game to make the next 2 or 3 a little easier, that isn't always a bad idea...
  10. I do need to verify these things about Flores; he is a RHH. He isn't a bad player, but I wonder if the Mets would prefer to move the older and more expensive Asdrubal Cabrera. As both players have the same control remaining, they might be open to moving Flores, but which one would be more difficult to acquire? Even with Flores being only 27, he isn't a long-term solution, which might be what the Sox want at the position. No one is really sure if Dombrowski is targeting 2b, although I think he should be. If he is, it seems like, given our trade fodder, a pending free agent to finish out this year would be the target...
  11. You do realize that post was more in support of your point about professional softball for advanced ages, right? That players at even the highest level of softball in this country are all in their early 20's...
  12. That knuckle ball pitchers seek each other out has nothing to do with in-game management of them. And to say he doesn't know how to manage them because he doesn't know the intricacies of the pitch is also BS. Managing the starter also means managing the bullpen. Maybe Cora left him in because he didn't want to use his relievers so early? If he did retire Cruz, was it right or wrong to leave him in? Maybe he is starting to lack faith in his bullpen? I do completely disagree with the notion that he didn't know how to mange Wright because he is a knuckle ball pitcher, and certainly that us fans know more about it than he does...
  13. If the price is set by the Herrera deal, Britton might not be so unattainable. Baltimore will probably start out looking for some sort of Andrew Miller/Aroldis Chapman package at first, but should eventually have to settle. It could depend on how paitent Dobrowski is, which can also backfire if he it doesn't work and he has no plan B left by then
  14. It wasn't a good decision, but I think it's premature to say he doesn't know how to handle knuckleballers. And even sillier to think any of us do...
  15. That was in response to the notion that he wasn't familiar with knuckle ball pitchers. He is...
  16. Except Brinson is an excellent defender and only a rookie with plenty of time and room to grow. Davis is one of the worst contracts in MLB history and only still occupies a roster spot through the sheer stubbornness of the Baltimore front office who has to realize they'd be better off paying him to play elsewhere...
  17. I take my daughter to Chicago Bandits' games on occasion and those players are all part time with other jobs or still in college.
  18. Agreed. I have extensive experience watching baseball and I would count zero seconds of it as scouting. I don't even think I know what those guys look for sometimes...
  19. I agree that girl's softball should be above men's leagues. Girl's softball has faster pitching and fewer beers..
  20. Boom. When it was just newspapers, stories were verified before print and we all got the newspapers at the same time the next day. Nowadays when circulation is counted with clicks and hits, being fast is more important than being accurate and it is very easy to write a follow up article with corrections later...
  21. There are 16 position players with fewer fWAR than Hanley still on MLB rosters (including Eduardo Nunez).
  22. The big issue I have with Wilmer Flores is that he is another part-time Swiss Army knife player. He's like a switch-hitting Brock Holt, but a lesser version. I think with Holt, Nunez, Lin and Swihart, the Sox have versatility covered. If the Sox cannot get a player better than Brock Holt or Nunez any deal is a waste of time and limited resources...
  23. To be fair, I would say it doesn't count either. But then I don't think any of our experiences playing high school baseball are relevant to anything that happens on an MLB team...
  24. I think teams aer willing to, but not with an offer he likes. Adam Lind was willing to accept a minor league deal. Hanley may not be so inclined. He's a 3 time all star, 4 time top ten MVP and former Rookie of the Year. The idea of having to prove himself again by playing games after long bus rides might not be a situation he is looking forward to. I'd be very surprised if he has not gotten any minor league offers. But I can also see why very few teams are willing to give him an MLB-minimum chance and a 25-man roster spot right now, given his performance and the positions he can still handle. As for this report, it's not like he is looking for a multi-year deal and teams are faced with the risk of signing him thinking he might have pending legal issues. For a minimum wage deal, they could simply release him if there was anything to the allegations with no harm done. The reason that hasn't happened yet is probably the lack of deals that interest him. He very well might be retired by choice right now...
  25. And I coach my daughter's softball team, so I guess I'm Cora's equal as well. Or am I his superior, since I am not a rookie coach?
