  1. The real downside to Hosmer is how many times he gets auto-corrected to "Hoser"
  2. Unless Price returns to form next year. Hosmer is the unexciting option for people who don't believe in the cliff. If you like Martinez, his peak years will be better than Hosmer, but he will be into decline by the time the Sox key players are all ready for free agency. Hosmer will be the better player 3 to 4 years down the line. Martinez better immediately, but not for as long...
  3. JD Martinez' asking price is $210mill over 7 years. That's a lot of money for a guy who will probably suck in 3 years. Save the cash and give a mega-extension to Betts. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/11/jd-martinez-rumor-200-million-asking-price.html Carlos Santana looks better by the day...
  4. Archer is probably more than the Sox can afford. Certainly other teams can top the Sox offer. Dickerson has an OPS+ of 113 and 51 HRs in 2 seasons in Tampa. While not a prime target, he's not a bad option...
  5. While new reports have surfaced that Stanton is being open-minded to any new location, the Marlins are reportedly asking for the moon plus for him....
  6. Probably because it took him 5 years to figure out AAA pitching so they figured one month wasn't enough time to figure out MLB pitching...
  7. Has he said he doesn't want Boston? So far all I have heard is he prefers either coast. And the opt out appears to be an overblown issue. If the Sox don't give up much for him, it might get them out of the later unproductive years. But still get three years in his prime. If the Sox have to move Bogaerts (2 years) or Bradley (3 years) to accomodate Stanton or get the prospects to acquire him, those players will be leaving then anyway. As Branch Rickshaws " it's better to give up a player a year to early than a year too late". I'd rather have 3 prime years of Stanton than 5 or 6 post-prime years of JD Martinez. ..
  8. The Yankees are getting under the cap this year for exactly that reason. Think we outbid them? If the goal is a post-2018 free agent, then just sign Yonder Alonso now and put him to work convincing his brother-in-law to come to Boston. ..
  9. I'm no Hosmer advocate, but at least he still has enough years in his prime left to justify the 6/7 year deal he'll get. He's a good player, but not really the guy the Sox need...
  10. To me, it depends on the context of the comparison. For example, if someone says "Player X is the best defensive shortstop I've ever seen." Well, not much arguing there. I don't know who you've seen. And as I don't, this testimony doesn't mean much when anyone says it. Not even mal...
  11. To me, Stanton is worth re-arranging the outfield for. JD Martinez is not, especially since they'd be getting very few prime years on a long contract. Not sure about Martinez' ability or desire to play first or DH, but his age strikes me as a train to avoid the contract he wants. Santana is a good plan B if he is ok with the predicted 4 year deal. I'm no huge Hosmer fan, but I'd take the prime years of Hosmer over the post-prime Martinez. But I think I'd prefer Moustakas over either Hosmer or Martinez. He certainly has the power advantage. His deal won't be be as crippling. And his defense is actually quite good despite oft-repeated posts that it isn't. Especially since next year he won't be coming off an injury-plagued season. So my preferences in order 1. Stanton 2. Santana 3. Moustakas 4. Hosmer 5. Martinez. I have a feeling Dombrowski has a very different order, at least after the top spot...
  12. No. Second round only. We git under the cap. Remember?
  13. I have to crack up at all the people who try to bring up situations that WAR doesn't account for as an attempt to discredit it. And then they'll go back to batting average and errors, neither of which show up in any of their scenarios.
  14. I know it's hard to believe Stanton might be a better defensive player than a left fielder who once cut off a throw from the CF from 30 feet away...
  15. I'm a bit hesitant to call 1b a good idea for Martinez. ..
  16. Presumably he'll deal Bradley to the Giants (Christian Arroyo? ) and then flip that player plus, say, ERod and maybe throw in Ball or Owens, and get Stanton and the entire contract...
  17. I was being sarcastic. But DD has certainly shown in the past he doesn't discount his offer just because he is taking the whole contract...
  18. Fangraphs rated JBJ #46 in terms of trade value, just behind Bogaerts.
  19. Any one part of that deal would be ok. But, again, this is Dombrowski...
  20. I would agree. It could be. I hate giving up Bradley, however. I don't think a Martinez-Betts-Benintendi OF is necessarily an improvement. ..
  21. It wasn't a good deal, and the Yankees wild spending spree that off-season got one immediate title and nothing else. The qualification for Teixeira "in his 30s" really just supports my long standing view about free agency. The Yankees would have been better off not signing Teixeira and drafting Trout...
  22. Look at all of 'em!!! Although technically I think it's only 113.
  23. Hanley is an example of how bad outfield defense can impact a game/season. While Stanton isn't that bad, is the drop off from Bradley to Stanton a similar magnitude?
  24. He won't be given away, but the talent might not be so elite. And it certainly won't requre a top prospect. Otherwise the Sox would not be involved. Nut both the duration and sticking point are issues. The overall commitment is $300mill, and the only reason he got that deal in the first place was to appease him after complaints from a previous fire sale (in the wake of the Josj Johnson trade). Or do you actually think the Marlins care about their fans and baseball team now?
  25. If its an overall improvement, yes you do it. But why is it Sox fans only look at 3 out of 115 World Series as the "How to" for team building? Plent of teams have won a WS without a legitimate big home run bat like Ortiz, Manny or Stanton. That said, I prefer Stanton to Martinez...
