  1. And I said the market didn't go up over $10mill per year in 5 months. If Pedroia went to free agency that off-season, he easily would have gotten $18-20mill per year. He signed for $13.75mill. That puts him below market value...
  2. In the three seasons before signing with Seattle, Cano was worth 18.5 fWAR. In the same 3 seasons, Pedroia was worth 17.5 fWAR. How are they not comparable?
  3. More like Marshall's. ..
  4. Cano's contract came 5 months after. And his AAV was nearly double and for more years. Are you saying the market changed that much in five months?
  5. An honor he held for less than 5 months...
  6. Silly me. And here I thought Tampa left him unprotected because he put up a .680 OPS in low A-ball as a 25yo. Apparently it was because he went through drug rehab 5 years earlier. I take it this means you won't be answering my other questions. ..
  7. His OPS dropped 140 points in one year when he was moved to a more physically demanding position at age 32. Certainly keeping him at first could have slowed down his decline. But for some reason the Sox wanted a big name at first. And in order to get one, they hastened the end off one all star first baseman, traded away another, and walked away from a future Hall of Famer. All to accommodate a guy who didn't live up top his hype, didn't like Boston, and eventually became part of the biggest salary dump in team history. But on the bright side, we did eventually get a few innings of Carson Smith from this fiasco in the long run. ..
  8. I think this off-season could linger into the post-season..
  9. I would like to know why Groome's dad going away is a "red flag" and why he needs to be devalued as a prospect because of this. If Gleyber Torres' dad gets arrested tomorrow, will you suddenly decide he is a lesser prospect? Groome is like any other prospect. If he can pitch/play, that will be all that matters. Also if you think all those other players established themselves before drug problems became an issue (despite that it actually made no difference, and certainly a lot less than what they did after their problems), you forgot about Josh Hamilton, who went to his first drug rehab while still in A ball...
  10. Or kept Youkilis at first where he belonged
  11. That can be cured with a few (line) shots...
  12. Maybe it's not so much an incentive for bidders as it is a preference from Martinez himself...
  13. Not to mention not getting Sandoval and possibly even keeping Rizzo...
  14. They'll presumably let the league handle it, but they were required to go through the arbitration process (or agreement) since they offered it to him. This means nothing about his punishment status.
  15. Typically the plan is to be the last option on the table. But it's January 9th and about 130 free agents out of 165ish are still unsigned. Still plenty of options out there for everyone. ..
  16. I've been assuming that if the Sox sign Martinez, Bradley would get dealt for a pitcher. But if Dombrowski is being truthful when he says Bradley stays, why is he not getting pitching?
  17. That article does make it sound like he prefers playing the field over a DH job. If both Boston and, say, San Francisco come in with equal offers , he could easily go to the Giants instead...
  18. Why void the opt out? To force the signing team to pay $140mill over 6 years to a guy who misses nearly 25% of his games?
  19. The real delay is that Martinez doesn't want the Sox. Martinez had said he doesn't want to DH. Dombrowski has said he wants to sign Martinez as a DH. Big issue here. Martinez is certainly well aware the Sox have a loaded outfield. The obvious resolution is to deal am outfielder to make room, likely Bradley But the Sox really can't deal Bradley until they sign Martinez, because he still might sign elsewhere. And, let's face it, it gives way too much leverage to Boras. The Puig deal wouldn't solve anything, which may have also factored into why it was rejected so quickly. Dealing Bradley for another outfielder just changes the names in the same logjam. .. So hence the impasse. ..
  20. It's nice to see Dombrowski has the "sign a minor league catcher" thing mastered. How about a minor league deal for a pitcher or two? This team is one arm injury away from relying on Jalen Beeks....
  21. Don't count out the Giants, who were prepared to spend $290mill on Giancarlo Stanton and might currently have the worst outfield in MLB history. Also the Padres dodged a bullet with Hosmer and can spend that allotment of cash elsewhere. ..
  22. The problem is at that price, who else is in the market willing to go 6 or 7 years? Steve Phillips on MLB Network seems to think the market is Boston alone....
  23. Eh. When I used to post at ESPN using this same moniker, one of the most oft-recurring jokes was to credit false MLB rumors to http://www.petergammons.org
  24. Of course no mention was made of what was offered for Swihart. As I would guess many GMs viewed him as a high ceiling flier, I doubt any of the offers were all that eye-popping...
  25. I'm probably one of the bigger JD Martinez supporters here (which was not true at the beginning of the off-season) and this process is truly frustrating. The market offers very little in the way of alternatives, but right now if the Sox want to make a lesser "splash" with an eye on the next market, Mike Moustakas might be the biggest bargain available based on the amount of buzz about him. (Although signing Moreland does make this more difficult. )
